Enhancing User and Visitor Experience through Virtual Reality: A Research on the Agora of Smyrna
(Marmara Univ, FAC Communication, 2025) Ugurluer, Simge; Aysel, Kardelen
This study, grounded in the theoretical frameworks of the experience economy and new museology, investigates the relationship between user experience (UX) in immersive virtual environments and visitor experience in cultural heritage settings. It focuses on the Smyrna Agora Virtual Reality Application, created for an ancient Hellenistic-Roman site and developed under the Heritage Alive project (2022) by theİzmir Association for the Protection and Development of Urban Values, with support from the T.C. Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the European Union. The research evaluates nine UX dimensions: presence, immersion, engagement, flow, skill, emotion, judgment, experience consequence, and technology adoption. The primary aim is to examine how these dimensions affect the visitor experience and whether outcomes differ based on participants' prior use of VR or visits to the heritage site. A quantitative design was adopted, with surveys administered to 140 undergraduate students aged 18-25 after their VR engagement. The instruments used were adapted from two validated UX and visitor experience scales. Results show a strong, positive correlation between UX and visitor experience. However, previous VR familiarity or prior visits to the site did not significantly influence participants' responses.

Homophily studies in higher education: Bibliometric and methodological analysis of the literature
(2025) Mert Seven; Kardelen Aysel; Seven, Mert; Aysel, Kardelen
Homophily the tendency of individuals to form relationships with others who are similar to themselves has crucial implications for social networks and interactions in higher education settings. The networks formed under the university's educational framework the transfer of behavior and information and the examination of the social context in which the learning experience occurs have paved the way for research on homophily in higher education. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of research on homophily in higher education published in journals indexed in Web of Science Citation Databases (Science Citation Index Expanded Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation Index) between 1991 and 2024. By searching for publications containing keywords related to homophily higher education and learning 46 articles were identified and analyzed using bibliometric tools and techniques. Key research areas/clusters interdisciplinary distribution patterns of productivity and collaboration across countries keyword co-occurrence networks and citation networks were examined to reveal trends influential studies and the conceptual and intellectual structure of this research area. Using RStudio Bibliometrix and VOSviewer to identify key trends research areas and conceptual structures in the field this study reveals that education psychology and social sciences contribute a high proportion of research. When the annual scientific production graph of the studies in this field was analyzed the findings showed an increasing trend. According to the research results the highest productivity and citations came from countries such as the United States the United Kingdom and the Netherlands and it was revealed that international collaborations between these countries were strong. Keyword analysis revealed that terms such as 'social network ' 'academic performance' and 'homophily' were frequently used. The results highlight the development of homophily studies in the higher education context and provide the conceptual and methodological foundation for further research on social relations group dynamics and cultural diversity/dissent in universities.

Novice designers in museums: A constructively aligned framework bridging formal and informal learning through artefact analysis
(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2025) Kardelen Aysel; Doruk Türkmen; Aysel, Kardelen; Turkmen, Doruk
We investigate how an artefact analysis framework grounded in constructive alignment principles can bridge formal design education with informal museum environments. Through three-phased qualitative research, fieldwork with 26 students focus group with seven and subsequent toolkit development we tested and iteratively refined this framework. Our analysis of 78 student-submitted artefact boards revealed significant patterns in how novices engage with design principles: while students excelled at identifying explicit functions they struggled with symbolic interpretation and complex spatial relationships. Focus group discussions diagnosed the causes of these challenges revealing a need for critical pedagogical interventions such as enhanced conceptual scaffolding and multimodal learning supports. This paper details the iterative design process of using these findings to create a refined pedagogical toolkit. The resulting toolkit addresses the identified challenges through terminology clarification progressive scaffolding and hands-on visual aids providing a practical model for enhancing learning transfer between museum and studio environments. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
