An analysis of physical and psychological expectations of earthquake victims from temporary shelters: A design proposal
(Middle East Technical Univ, 2012) Belma Yüksel; Deniz Hasirci; Yuksel, Belma; Hasirci, Deniz
This study analyzes physical and psychological expectations of earthquake victims from temporary shelters and presents a design proposal. Interviews were conducted with earthquake victims in the city of Kocaeli in Turkey and needs were identified. Also user survey results from previous studies that have been conducted after the August 17th earthquake in 1999 were used to establish the design requirements for a temporary housing unit. While lack of space and issues of crowding noise and hygiene were mentioned as the most important problems in temporary earthquake shelters suggestions to improve them included consideration of psychology and privacy needs of victims. The need for a "home" and not just a shelter has been identified and design guidelines have been examined. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

CHILDREN WITH AUTISM PROVIDING A KNOWLEDGE BASE FOR EDUCATIONAL AND THERAPEUTIC PRODUCT DESIGN
(IATED-INT ASSOC TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT, 2016) Sevi Merter; Deniz Hasirci; Merter, Sevi; Hasirci, Deniz; LG Chova; AL Martinez; IC Torres
Besides everyday objects and environments children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) engage with a wide range of educational and therapeutic tools equipment and environments that aim to improve their social interaction communication and motor skills sensory systems and enhance cognitive abilities self-maintenance and independence. Such products and environments play a significant role in ASD-specific schools and special education centers. In Turkey public schools apply the curriculum that is approved by the Ministry of National Education whereas private special education centers apply more specific ASD intervention and educational methods accepted worldwide. These schools and special education centers are equipped with products that vary depending on whether the school or center is a public or a private one since they apply different curricula. However these products used in integration with various methods do not always fully suit the needs of these children. In that sense participatory product design has much to offer to children with ASD in terms of increasing their overall wellbeing and quality of life. Participatory design as a design method giving participants the right to have a say both in the design process and the final product enables the involvement of these children and others also affected by the disorder such as parents and special educators in shaping their surroundings. In this study examining a public and a private special education center in Izmir Turkey the physical environments provided to children with ASD as well as the possibilities of participation of the children and their caregivers in these centers in the design of educational and therapeutic products are discussed with examples in terms of children's attachment to the products in these environments and their contribution to children's quality of life in return through observations and interviews. The findings showed that the participatory design processes conducted with children with ASD their parents and caregivers were helpful in collecting significant information that is not readily available elsewhere and that can be a base for new educational and therapeutic product design for children with ASD.

Looking into Mid-Century Modern Furniture Design in Turkey through Oral History
(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2024) Zeynep Tuna Ultav; Deniz Hasirci; Hande Atmaca; Atmaca, Hande; Tuna Ultav, Zeynep; Ultav, Zeynep Tuna; Hasirci, Deniz
ABSTRACT Furniture design has traditionally taken second place to architecture in historiography especially in Turkey. The consequent limited furniture-related academic publications original material and documentation make it necessary to probe further into Turkey’s modern furniture history. The DATUMM (Documenting and Archiving Turkish Modern Furniture) Project (datumm.org) (2013–) was initiated to help fill this gap in the history of modern furniture design in Turkey between 1930 and 1975. Other than highlighting furniture the documentary aimed to initiate an oral history project that has not been conducted in the design realm before in Turkey. Oral history interviews were conducted with thirteen contributors including designers artisans and producers who have significantly influenced Turkish modern furniture design. This method gave a voice to those who have not been able to contribute to Turkey’s design history and reveals individual stories to construct a more comprehensive narrative. These interviews thus provide valuable opportunities to grasp what is hidden in the written history and understand the shared stories experiences and struggles of designers to create a flourishing discipline from almost nothing. © 2024 Elsevier B.V. Mid-Century Modern Furniture Representing Modern Ideals in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey
(WILEY PERIODICALS INC, 2020) Deniz Hasirci; Zeynep Tuna Ultav; Tuna Ultav, Zeynep; Hasirci, Deniz; Ultav, Zeynep Tuna
This study focuses on how the modern furniture designed for Turkey's third parliament building the Grand National Assembly of Turkey represented the country's new modern ideals by breaking with its Ottoman heritage. While the architecture of this building has been studied there are no assessments of its interiors and furniture as integral elements. This study uses archival research and interviews with interior designers who worked on the project. The findings shed light on how modernization was brought to life through the spaces and furniture in this powerful symbolic building.

Systematic Modern: Önder Küçükerman's Holistic Approach to Turkish Interiors
(Docomomo, 2022) Deniz Hasirci; Zeynep Tuna Ultav; Melis Örnekoğlu-Selçuk; Selçuk, Melis Örnekoğlu; Hasirci, Deniz; Ultav, Zeynep Tuna; C.J. Such , M.P. Figueres , A. Tostoes , U. Pottgiesser
The modern interior space is strikingly expressive in terms of reflecting its users' lifestyle products and materials of the time. However there has been a lack recognition of the significance of Turkish interiors and a need to record them. In the absence of surviving modern interiors a combination of literature surveys oral history methods and other cultural products such as literary books films and popular magazines are the most effective ways to obtain a comprehensive story of the day and informed this study through an analysis of the holistic works of a pioneer Turkish designer. Historically the Turkish interior developed organically expanding according to new requirements being carved out from inside to out. This was different from the planned and systematic approach to designing modernist interiors which was not only a matter of a new way of space creation for designers but also a new way of living for inhabitants. This paper focuses on one of the primary forerunners of systematic thinking regarding Turkish design, Önder Küçükerman a Turkish modern interior architect and industrial designer academic who has highlighted the modernist rationale and the connection between academia and industry. His work has directly and indirectly shaped and set criteria regarding modern design in Turkey which have had lasting influences. The paper is framed by four areas of practice that illustrate Küçükerman's influence and impact. First the design process as it relates to interiors second his process and production in relation to furniture design and distribution and third his holistic approach to design be it interior furniture within an architectural context'. The fourth and last area of interest is Küçükerman's particular process and practice in of documentation from his book writing practises to his archival methods. © 2023 Elsevier B.V. The multiple stories behind the modern ceramic coffee tables of the grand national assembly of Turkey
(Oxford University Press, 2020) Deniz Hasirci; Zeynep Tuna Ultav; Hasirci, Deniz; Ultav, Zeynep Tuna
At the end of the 1950s 200 coffee tables and other furniture and fittings were created by interior designers who won a design competition organized by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) in Ankara. The tables were envisioned to be made by modern ceramic artists and designers of the time. Despite never meeting they created joint works that were celebrated at the time for their artistic quality. The coffee tables which were used by government ministers were useful for introducing ceramics into government interiors while informing the leaders of a modernizing Turkish nation about modern art. This study traces the stories behind the creation of these unique artworks based on the personal stories of Füreya Koral Sadun Ersin and the Taylan Ceramics Atelier who were all significant contributors to the history of this furniture. The method used included literature review a comprehensive archival research through popular magazines and interviews with artists and designers of the time. The interviews helped uncover data that could not be accessed otherwise. The findings contribute to Turkish and international design history uncovering artworks and identifying modernist artists and designers of the time in Turkey. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. TRANSIENCE and the MODERN TURKISH INTERIOR
(Universidad de Oviedo, 2023) Deniz Hasirci; Zeynep Tuna Ultav; Umut Şumnu; Sumnu, Umut; Hasirci, Deniz; Ultav, Zeynep Tuna
Despite the expansion of research in modern interiors around the world and a more inclusive dialogue with regards to geography ultimately the field is still lacking theory and methods derived from its own specific needs rather than being adapted from architectural research and a focus on its transient nature that is likely to lead to more impactful research and preservation results. Modern Turkish interiors research have also expanded greatly with individual as well as projects or research groups like docomomotr interiors and DATUMM (Documenting and Archiving Modern Turkish Furniture) that create awareness through various forms of scholarly (documentaries archival work) and popular (public exhibitions popular books and magazines newspaper pieces and films) output. Although transience and thus a race with time is at the core of modern interiors research and several struggles are common worldwide socio-cultural and economic reasons result in a faster pace in Turkey creating an urgency to implement innovative methods and approaches fitting contemporary prerequisites of the field. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.
