Economic and Social Consequences of Population Aging the Dilemmas and Opportunities in the Twenty-First Century
(Springer Netherlands, 2015) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Ince Yenilmez, Meltem; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince
Population aging is one of the most important demographic features that has come into prominence in the twenty-first century. In general longevity has increased while fertility has declined resulting in an increase in the proportion of the older people. Aging of the population affects all aspects of the society including health social security education socio-cultural activities family life and the labor market. Regarding the latter a decline in the young population of working age lowers the labour force participation rate leading to a rise in the proportion of retired people. While governments in both developing and developed countries primarily focus on the negative effects of this for socio- demographic development they have often also considered how such labour shortages can be mitigated by increasing the retirement age. Regarding care of the elderly if fertility continues decreasing then this will inevitably lead to a lack of care workers both paid and unpaid especially for elderly people. The social and economic provision of care still creates gender dilemmas for societies by narrowing the range of employment opportunities for women. As caring responsibilities are in general better fulfilled by women high demand for paid care workers will increase women’s participation in the labor market in place of their role as unpaid care workers in the household. This paper analyzes possible changes in several variables including labour force participation the pension system retirement age and labour supply. It places special emphasis on a variety of demographic and policy forces that are vitally important for evaluating the impact of population aging on economic growth. It also considers the implications of these developments for closing the gender gap in pension provision. It ends by offering some policy options aimed at forming the active policies that are essential for coping with the world’s rapidly increasing number of older people. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. LGBTQIs in Turkey: the Challenges and Resilience of This Marginalized Group
(SPRINGER, 2021) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Ince Yenilmez, Meltem; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince
Lesbian gay bisexual transgender intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) individuals constitute a large group of minority groups in Turkey. Because of the scarcity of non-existent systematic reviews on the sexual orientation discrimination of LGBTIQ individuals in Turkey the present study aims to outline the major discriminatory practices against these individuals and fills the gap through a systematic literature review based on rigorous criteria. The present paper examines 21 selected papers explores key emerging themes and recent developments to identify research gaps and provides areas for future research. Therefore discrimination in employment and at the workplace discrimination in health discrimination in public service and discrimination by the government were identified as the major themes of the current review. Through these themes it was further revealed that the key pillars of LGBT discrimination in Turkey rest on the legal frameworks social institutions and norms. The best ways to eradicate LGBT discrimination in Turkey rest on modifying changing or creating LGBT inclusive/supportive policies within these pillars.

PANDEMICS AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DURING COVID-19
(INT JOURNAL CONTEMPORARY ECONOMICS & ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, 2020) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Onur Burak Celik; Ince Yenilmez, Meltem; Celik, Onur Burak
The year 2020 met us with the COVID-19 pandemic. The covid-19 pandemic has gone past a mere health challenge. Its effect can be felt in the economy and society in general. Women form a large chunk of the response efforts geared at flattening the curve of the COVID-19 scourge. As the first point of contact caregivers medical personnel volunteers logistics facilitators researchers and scientists and other professionals critical to the fight against the virus women are making profound contributions in the fight against the spread of the outbreak. Most of the caregivers found in our homes and communities today are women. Furthermore women stand a higher risk of infection and loss of their sources of livelihood and as the outbreak continues to spread there is all likelihood that they may not be able to access programs vital to their reproductive and sexual health. There is also a rise in cases of domestic violence against women in this crisis period. This study will be exploring a wide range of literature about pandemics that have happened in the past and previous public health emergencies and crisis to enable it to ascertain patterns by which pandemics can further heighten the different kinds of violence against women. Evidence gathered from this study will be used to make recommendations to governments civil society organizations community-based agencies and international donor agencies to help make women and children's health priority keeping them safe and preparing them adequately for another possible pandemic.

Socio-political Attitude Towards Lesbians in Turkey
(Springer New York LLC barbara.b.bertram@gsk.com, 2017) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince; Ince Yenilmez, Meltem
This article explores issues of discrimination involving lesbians in Turkey. It analyzes and brings into focus fundamental human rights issues being faced by lesbians in Turkey with the aim of ascertaining why such discrimination still persist in the twenty-first century. The finding of this study reveals that the lesbian identity or simply queer identity in Turkey experiences a combination of silencing and suffocating factors: ethics discourse religious and state-sanctioned laws and/or homophobic violence which in turn leads to systematic breaches of the social rights of lesbians in employment housing family life education public life and health care. It further reveals that even a strong social policy that is universal like the first article of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) fails to put lesbians and other queer individuals on an equal footing with other citizens unless equal citizenship rights of lesbians and anti-discrimination principles are recognized and realized. © 2017 Elsevier B.V. THE CHALLENGE OF FEMICIDE AND VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN TURKEY
(INT JOURNAL CONTEMPORARY ECONOMICS & ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, 2016) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Mehmet Hulusi Demir; Demir, Mehmet Hulusi; Ince Yenilmez, Meltem
Violence against women in Turkey is a tangible manifestation of the way that Turkish men have used force to exercise dominance over Turkish women. It is considered by many in society as natural cultural and possibly unchanging. Violence is inarguably a critical social challenge throughout Turkey and has not improved even as the world is addressing it more and more. Violence against women is a crime against human rights which this study attempts to address. The aim of this paper is to discover the reasons for femicide and violence and to determine whether a change in the legal system can ultimately resolve the problem. Indeed in present-day Turkey it is very difficult to verify the precise levels of violence against women. The paper concludes that unless there is a fundamental change in attitudes towards women especially on the part of men violence against women and femicide will continue to be major challenges and will remain to be properly addressed by lawmakers. Furthermore because attitudes towards women are not good in Turkey official statistics regarding violence against women are unreliable making it that much more difficult to implement targeted effective measures to address violence against women and femicide.

(EMERALD GROUP PUBLISHING LTD, 2020) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Ince Yenilmez, Meltem
Purpose The purpose of this study is to look at the policies for the protection of women during pandemics while taking gender and feminist interests into crucial consideration. In perilous times like this where many humans are living in fear and struggling to survive a world filled with diverse traumatizing events such as wars universal pandemic man-induced tragedies natural destruction overwhelming stress and stress-related illnesses abound. Currently Covid-19 pandemic is rampaging in different areas of the world. Design/methodology/approach Studies are reviewed the major reasons of the violence against women during lockdown. A qualitative review of the literature is performed and analyzed. Findings There are issues this Covid-19 pandemic has caused and one major issue is the stigma and trauma women face around the world even in their homes. Domestic violence is a serious concern. It is therefore paramount for the government to intervene on this issue by declaring domestic violence as essential services and must set modalities in place for instant reliefs to women in such distress. It is even further envisaged that the term lockdowns have a diverse number of interpretations. One such prevailing argument is that humans are enslaved to their general imaginations may continue in the pathways set aside by gender stereotypes or the same lockdowns can be used as a means to set aside patriarchal notions and pursue a violence-free existence. Originality/value This research will increase the awareness in terms of preventing gender-based violence and try to address how this pandemic makes it worse for women. In addition there are many studies focused on family violence and Covid-19 while few focus on gender.

    Women's economic empowerment in Turkey
(Taylor and Francis Inc., 2019) Onur Burak Çelik; Meltem İnce-Yenilmez; Çelik, Onur Burak; Ince Yenilmez, Meltem
Turkey has experienced growth in both the population and the workforce. However female participation in the workforce in Turkey is extremely low largely due to financial dependency and lack of higher education. The authors argue that greater research is needed to improve the economic position of women throughout the country and this remains a challenge that must be fixed both culturally and socioeconomically. The book explores the significant gap between policy advancements actual practices and the impact of regional variety in the cultural structure. The authors suggest that this in turn has affected Turkey's ability to implement changes and reform. Reform must allow women to pursue changes that will give them greater financial flexibility and freedom within the country. The authors demonstrate the concept and framework for women's empowerment and explore the need for this. This book seeks to discuss the approaches and strategies for empowering women by outlining the strategies policies and tools that women are using for their empowerment focusing on Turkey while comparing with other countries worldwide. It also brings several issues to the forefront such as equality treatment political participation social issues the gender pay gap the glass ceiling and gender (in)equality the migration effect and education. Offering a multi-disciplinary exploration of the relationship and connection between employment national policies migration economies entrepreneurialism and gender in present Turkey this book is an invaluable contribution to the existing literature surrounding Turkish gender studies and will be of interest to both scholars and experts in the field. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.
