(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2019) Syed Shah Sultan Mohiuddin Qadri; Mahmut Ali Gökçe; Erdinc Oner; Elif Gulfirat Gokce; Gokce, Mahmut Ali; Gokce, Elif Gulfirat; Ali Gokce, Mahmut; Qadri, Syed Shah Sultan Mohiuddin; Oner, Erdinc
Proper use of urban infrastructure is one of the manifest strategies to improve traffic congestion issues. An important part of the relevant urban infrastructure is traffic signals. Traffic signals with optimal timing setting result in a smoother traffic movement. Modeling with microsimulation software is one of the competent tools for the evaluation of traffic flow on an urban road network. In this study PTV VISSIM microsimulation software is utilized to compare the performance of traffic flow at the signalized roundabout in contrast to a four-way signalized intersection in Izmir Turkey. For this purpose a signalized roundabout situated in the center of Bornova district Izmir Turkey is selected. Current roundabout and an alternative for the intersection is tested with a detailed set of scenarios. Results from the experimentation show that the alternatively proposed four-way signalized intersection design is better than signalized roundabout in terms of queue lengths and delay times. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

In modern industrial facilities optimizing production lines is essential for improving efficiency and minimizing waste. This study presents an original application of Value Stream Mapping (VSM) combined with Arena simulation to identify and address inefficiencies in a towel pan manufacturing facility—a previously unexplored context in Lean Manufacturing research. By mapping the current state and simulating workflows the research uncovers critical bottlenecks excessive waiting times and resource allocation imbalances while introducing two key contributions: (1) a hybrid VSM-simulation methodology to validate process improvements in thermal comfort product manufacturing bridging gaps in low-volume production systems and (2) data-driven Kaizen bursts targeting non-value-added activities (NVAs) such as manual Kanban systems and material handling inefficiencies. These findings advance both theory and practice by demonstrating VSM’s adaptability to complex low-volume environments and providing actionable Lean insights ultimately underscoring the role of systematic diagnostics and simulation as pivotal tools for sustainable process optimization. © 2025 Elsevier B.V. Intelligent Container Repositioning with Depot Pricing Policies
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022) Ceyhun Güven; Erdinc Oner; Uǧur Eliiyi; Eliiyi, Ugur; Guven, Ceyhun; Oner, Erdinc; C. Kahraman , S. Cevik Onar , B. Oztaysi , I.U. Sari , A.C. Tolga , S. Cebi
Empty container management has always been a crucial issue in the logistics sector. Specifically the repositioning of empty containers plays an important role in the industry of maritime shipping. Not only has an economic impact on the stakeholders affiliated with the container logistics chains but also has an effect on the society in terms of environment and sustainability as the reduction in the movement of empty containers will also reduce fuel consumption. The main objective of this paper is to minimize the total cost. This total cost includes the cost required for transportation of the empty containers to their depots and the storage cost of these containers in the assigned depots. The types of costs involved in empty container repositioning are defined via the review of the related literature and industrial practices. In this study a mixed-integer linear programming model is developed that minimizes the total cost require in the repositioning of empty containers. The proposed model determines the storage depot of each empty container considering the depot pricing policies and distances between the port terminals and container depots. Computational results indicate that the proposed model can identify the best alternatives for empty container storage with minimum total cost. © 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

State-of-art review of traffic signal control methods: challenges and opportunities
(SPRINGER, 2020) Syed Shah Sultan Mohiuddin Qadri; Mahmut Ali Gokce; Erdinc Oner; Gokce, Mahmut Ali; Qadri, Syed Shah Sultan Mohiuddin; Oner, Erdinc
Introduction Due to the menacing increase in the number of vehicles on a daily basis abating road congestion is becoming a key challenge these years. To cope-up with the prevailing traffic scenarios and to meet the ever-increasing demand for traffic the urban transportation system needs effective solution methodologies. Changes made in the urban infrastructure will take years sometimes may not even be feasible. For this reason traffic signal timing (TST) optimization is one of the fastest and most economical ways to curtail congestion at the intersections and improve traffic flow in the urban network. Purpose Researchers have been working on using a variety of approaches along with the exploitation of technology to improve TST. This article is intended to analyze the recent literature published between January 2015 and January 2020 for the computational intelligence (CI) based simulation approaches and CI-based approaches for optimizing TST and Traffic Signal Control (TSC) systems provide insights research gaps and possible directions for future work for researchers interested in the field. Methods In analyzing the complex dynamic behavior of traffic streams simulation tools have a prominent place. Nowadays microsimulation tools are frequently used in TST related researches. For this reason a critical review of some of the widely used microsimulation packages is provided in this paper. Conclusion Our review also shows that approximately 77% of the papers included utilizes a microsimulation tool in some form. Therefore it seems useful to include a review categorization and comparison of the most commonly used microsimulation tools for future work. We conclude by providing insights into the future of research in these areas.
