An inquiry into improving women participation in entrepreneurship in Turkey
(Allied Business Academies support@alliedacademies.org, 2018) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince
This research examines female small business owners who run and operate companies and start-ups in two different cities in Turkey, Istanbul and Izmir. The research takes a look at the challenges women face in founding and running their businesses and how to manage work-family conflicts that arise. By taking a look at the level of progress of Turkish female entrepreneurs the research draws a line between the differences and similarities between female entrepreneurs in Turkey and those in developed countries and seeks to find how their venture into entrepreneurship affects their cultural social and economic standing. This is primarily an exploratory research and therefore the findings are peculiar to female entrepreneurs in the two cities mentioned earlier. The research hopes to serve as an eye opener and a guide to further research. The research presents its findings and recommendations that could be carried out by government and implemented as government policies to encourage other women to go into entrepreneurship. One way government can go about this is to increase the number of spaces for women in social economic cultural legal and political sectors as these will improve the chances of women becoming employers of labour. © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Challenges in Youth Education and Employment in Turkey
(INT ORGANIZATION CENTER ACAD RESEARCH, 2014) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince; F Uslu
Although the unemployment is a common problem faced by all advanced countries it has different characteristics in terms of durations distribution across gender age and sectors. It is even more complicated for Turkey as well. In many developed countries the ratio of informal employment still remains high with deficiency in productive employment. Moreover as a result of the global financial and economic crisis Turkey is facing a job emergency. Delays in completing supportive macroeconomic policies for curbing unemployment eradicating collective bargaining of wages and social security protection poor design of employment framework and limits in job creation for youth are obstacles for the labor markets. Likewise precarious and unsecured work arrangements including temporary employment and part-time work are increasing especially among young employees. Compared to prime-aged workers younger cohorts face higher probability of being unemployed and work at informal sector with low standards of working conditions. Although human capital is the key element for youth to become employable in productive sectors Turkey still faces low levels of schooling and insufficient educational facilities. Thus the further investments are needed to invest in programs like active labor market and life-long learning to increase youth employment. Reducing informal employment promoting high quality and productive jobs are crucial for addressing the problems of youth unemployment.

(2021) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince

Economic and Social Consequences of Population Aging the Dilemmas and Opportunities in the Twenty-First Century
(Springer Netherlands, 2015) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Ince Yenilmez, Meltem; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince
Population aging is one of the most important demographic features that has come into prominence in the twenty-first century. In general longevity has increased while fertility has declined resulting in an increase in the proportion of the older people. Aging of the population affects all aspects of the society including health social security education socio-cultural activities family life and the labor market. Regarding the latter a decline in the young population of working age lowers the labour force participation rate leading to a rise in the proportion of retired people. While governments in both developing and developed countries primarily focus on the negative effects of this for socio- demographic development they have often also considered how such labour shortages can be mitigated by increasing the retirement age. Regarding care of the elderly if fertility continues decreasing then this will inevitably lead to a lack of care workers both paid and unpaid especially for elderly people. The social and economic provision of care still creates gender dilemmas for societies by narrowing the range of employment opportunities for women. As caring responsibilities are in general better fulfilled by women high demand for paid care workers will increase women’s participation in the labor market in place of their role as unpaid care workers in the household. This paper analyzes possible changes in several variables including labour force participation the pension system retirement age and labour supply. It places special emphasis on a variety of demographic and policy forces that are vitally important for evaluating the impact of population aging on economic growth. It also considers the implications of these developments for closing the gender gap in pension provision. It ends by offering some policy options aimed at forming the active policies that are essential for coping with the world’s rapidly increasing number of older people. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Education Equity: An Evaluation of Present Conditions: Will the US Be Able to Be an Educational Leader?
(Mary Ann Liebert Inc., 2021) Madhavi Venkatesan; Imesh Nuwan Bandara; Dzintra Iliško; Meltem İnce-Yenilmez; Iliško, Dzintra; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince; Bandara, Imesh Nuwan; Venkatesan, Madhavi
COVID-19 resulted in school closures on a global scale. However the most significant closures appear to be in North America. Educational disruption is anticipated to impact educational attainment in terms of drop-out rates but more significantly with respect to exacerbating pre-pandemic educational inequity and corresponding poverty. This discussion evaluates the impact of COVID-19 on the United States through a case-study review of Sri Lanka Turkey and Latvia. The case studies highlight that poor and marginalized populations irrespective of geography are vulnerable to economic shocks. Further COVID-19 has prompted greater transparency of the inequities faced by marginalized groups and by doing so increased the visibility of the need for intervention. Through an evaluation of literacy the discussion addresses the impact of normalized US racism on educational equity and economic growth and highlights how a legacy of race-based policies may impact the resiliency of the United States specific to the present pandemic. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Examination of the psychometric properties of the sport interest inventory in a sample of Turkish football spectators
(ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2020) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Gozde Ersoz; Serkan Cinarli; Ihsan Sari; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince; Cinarli, Serkan; Sari, Ihsan; Ersoz, Gozde
Purpose/Rationle: It is important for sport marketers and academicians to understand spectators' motivation for attending football games. Although football is the most popular sport in Turkey there is not enough study for understanding their behavior. The aim of this study is to examine the validity and reliability of the Sport Interest Inventory (SII) in a group of Turkish football spectators. Methodology: This research comprises two separate studies where 259 football spectators participated in the first study to whose data Explanatory Factor Analysis (EFA) was applied and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was applied to the data of 280 football spectators in the second study. Content validity was tested with EFA and CFA and Pearson's correlation coefficients among the variables were used to indicate convergent and predictive validities while reliability was tested by Cronbach's alpha internal consistency and composite reliability coefficients. Findings: The results support the appropriateness of the proposed 11-factor model for Turkish football spectators indicating that the Turkish version of the SII can be used to measure the motivational orientations of Turkish sports fans toward participating in sports competitions. Research contribution: The research contributes to our knowledge in the area of sports marketing research by developing the measurement tool for determining football spectators' preference. Practical implications: Practitioners in sports marketing will be able to collect data through this measurement tool to examine football spectators' behaviors.

LGBTQIs in Turkey: the Challenges and Resilience of This Marginalized Group
(SPRINGER, 2021) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Ince Yenilmez, Meltem; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince
Lesbian gay bisexual transgender intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) individuals constitute a large group of minority groups in Turkey. Because of the scarcity of non-existent systematic reviews on the sexual orientation discrimination of LGBTIQ individuals in Turkey the present study aims to outline the major discriminatory practices against these individuals and fills the gap through a systematic literature review based on rigorous criteria. The present paper examines 21 selected papers explores key emerging themes and recent developments to identify research gaps and provides areas for future research. Therefore discrimination in employment and at the workplace discrimination in health discrimination in public service and discrimination by the government were identified as the major themes of the current review. Through these themes it was further revealed that the key pillars of LGBT discrimination in Turkey rest on the legal frameworks social institutions and norms. The best ways to eradicate LGBT discrimination in Turkey rest on modifying changing or creating LGBT inclusive/supportive policies within these pillars.

Mind the Gap in Turkish Labor Market
(ALEXANDRU IOAN CUZA UNIV IASI FAC PHILOSOPHY & SOCIAL-POLITICAL SCIENCES, 2021) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince
The feminist theory equally focuses on the concept that the efforts of women are underrated. Nevertheless this concept is not an appropriate analytical tool to checkmate the gender gaps in the labor market in Turkey. This is owing to the fact the contributions of women to their households are not undervalued but that these women are perceived to have predetermined roles already and discouraged from trying to break through the barrier. Bridging this gender gap is vital for diverse reasons. It can help tackle poverty due to the direct and interrelated contributions to the welfare of the household. It also improves the position held by women as they can now take part in family decisions and making sure that primary income is used for necessities such as health care and children's education. Besides analyzing the characteristics fissures and cracks in employment in Turkey this paper will also uncover the principal drivers of gender inequality in employment. Therefore it looks in particular at the main drivers of the gender gap in employment in Turkey and is necessary towards finding the best policies that can transform the Turkish labor market into a more inclusive setup while promoting gender equality.

(2021) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince

Socio-political Attitude Towards Lesbians in Turkey
(Springer New York LLC barbara.b.bertram@gsk.com, 2017) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince; Ince Yenilmez, Meltem
This article explores issues of discrimination involving lesbians in Turkey. It analyzes and brings into focus fundamental human rights issues being faced by lesbians in Turkey with the aim of ascertaining why such discrimination still persist in the twenty-first century. The finding of this study reveals that the lesbian identity or simply queer identity in Turkey experiences a combination of silencing and suffocating factors: ethics discourse religious and state-sanctioned laws and/or homophobic violence which in turn leads to systematic breaches of the social rights of lesbians in employment housing family life education public life and health care. It further reveals that even a strong social policy that is universal like the first article of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) fails to put lesbians and other queer individuals on an equal footing with other citizens unless equal citizenship rights of lesbians and anti-discrimination principles are recognized and realized. © 2017 Elsevier B.V. The COVID-19 Pandemic on Women’s Employ-ment: Impacts and Consequences
(2020) Meltem Ince Yenilmez; HAKTAN SEVINÇ; Sevınç, Haktan; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince
The current COVID-19 pandemic has caused substantial economic setbacks andsubsequent recovery. When measured concern-ing past “recessions ” the present crisis affects women’s employment than men’s employment which is a far cry from the past outcomes. The current economic situation brought about by the effects of move-ment restrictions and social distancing rules affects sectors with a predominantly higher female workforce. Additionally schools and daycare centers have been shut down. Therefore many working moth-ers have been forced to leave their employment positions to attendto domestic work. This increased pressures and crisis faced by working mothers will likely persist primarily due to the already persistent unequal labor and discrimination of women in the labor market. Therefore there is an urgent need to establish policies that can reduce and redistribute domesticate work by improving labor market regula-tions and making provisions for low-cost care services. There is a need to enact effective social care policies and workplace practices to rein-vent the labor market thereby leading to better opportunities and participation for men and women.

The Difference between Male and Female Sport Participation in Turkey: “Determination Always Finds a Way”
(Montenegrin Sports Academy office@mjssm.me, 2020) Meltem İnce-Yenilmez; Onur Burak Çelik; Yenilmez, Meltem Ince; Celik, Onur Burak
The fight for gender equality throughout the world should be acknowledged and properly represented in society. This is all the more important in the sporting world with a further emphasis on the everyday Turkish woman. The rapid rise in female participation in sport in Turkey over the last ten years indicates a rise in the status of women in sport as well as several other areas. However it should be acknowledged that there is a clear gap with regards to how men and women participate in sport. The varying physical composition of women in comparison to their male counterparts and also the varying level of expectations society places on both male and female participation in sport limits the level of success women derive from actively participating in sport activities. This paper will examine the origin concepts and historical background of women in sport in Turkey. At the same time it will evaluate the current situation while also taking into consideration future developments relating to female participation leadership and sport media. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.
