Article A Canonical 3-D P53 Network Model that Determines Cell Fate by Counting Pulses(2018-08-03) Gökhan Demirkıran; Güleser Kalaycı Demir; Cüneyt GÜZELİŞFrom a system theory perspective p53 network dynamics is interesting since it can exhibit three dynamical modes of p53 namely low-level equilibrium oscillation and high-level equilibrium. Each of these modes are associated with different cell fate outcomes: cell survival cell cycle arrest and apoptosis.The literature reveals that a high level (apoptosis) is seen only after ending the oscillation phase so called two-phase dynamics which provides thedecision of apoptosis depending on the oscillation duration. This paper proposes that a negative feedback can keep time by counting the pulses ofoscillation to take the decision of apoptosis or cell survival. P53DINP1 which is the mediator of this feedback is added as a variable to a 2-D oscillatormodel of the p53 network. The resulting canonical 3-D model successfully replicates the two-phase dynamics. That is it possesses temporary oscillatorybehavior in which first oscillations (first phase) and then high level state (second phase) are observed. By introducing a new variable to the core oscillatorin the p53 network this study demonstrates that p53 network can be considered a modular structure which consists of an oscillator and other variablesthat control this oscillator to contribute to cell fate determination.Article A Comprehensive Evaluation of Yacht Charter Service Concept: Influence of Voyager-to-Voyager Interaction on Service Satisfaction(2021-09-30) Neslihan Paker; Osman GökThe study attempts to evaluate yacht charter service attributes considering the service quality customer satisfaction and loyalty three-leg framework. Besides visited destinations the service concept is enlarged with social servicescape dimensions of interaction quality and customer similarity for a holistic approach. A self-administered questionnaire was provided to 359 customers and the relationships in the research model were tested via structural equation modeling. The results showed that satisfaction depends on the interaction quality which is strongly related to the similarity between other customers as well as the quality of the service elements and the attractiveness of the visited destination. This study presents a pioneering research attempt focusing on the influence of customer-to-customer interaction and customer similarity on yacht charter services. Findings of the study provide a theoretical contribution highlighting the importance of customer-to-customer interaction for service appraisals of customers. Theoretical and practical implications for interaction-dominant services are discussed.Article A Comprehensive Review of Feature Selection and Feature Selection Stability in Machine Learning(2023-12-01) Mustafa Büyükkeçeci; mehmet okurFeature selection is a dimension reduction technique used to select features that are relevant to machine learning tasks. Reducing the dataset size by eliminating redundant and irrelevant features plays a pivotal role in increasing the performance of machine learning algorithms speeding up the learning process and building simple models. The apparent need for feature selection has aroused considerable interest amongst researchers and has caused feature selection to find a wide range of application domains including text mining pattern recognition cybersecurity bioinformatics and big data. As a result over the years a substantial amount of literature has been published on feature selection and a wide variety of feature selection methods have been proposed. The quality of feature selection algorithms is measured not only by evaluating the quality of the models built using the features they select or by the clustering tendencies of the features they select but also by their stability. Therefore this study focused on feature selection and feature selection stability. In the pages that follow general concepts and methods of feature selection feature selection stability stability measures and reasons and solutions for instability are discussed.Article A GENETIC ALGORITHM TO SOLVE THE MULTIDIMENSIONAL KNAPSACK PROBLEM(2013) MURAT ERSEN BERBERLER; Urfat G. NURİYEV; Aslı GÜLERIn this paper The Multidimensional Knapsack Problem (MKP) which occurs in many different applications is studied and a genetic algorithm to solve the MKP is proposed. Unlike the technique of the classical genetic algorithm initial population is not randomly generated in the proposed algorithm thus the solution space is scanned more efficiently. Moreover the algorithm is written in C programming language and is tested on randomly generated instances. Transportation is one of the major contributors to this\renvironmental decay. The harmful gases released to the air by the vehicles using petroleum fuel increase each day. One\rof the solutions is to make a gradual transition to electric vehicles. A major part of manufacturing an electric vehicle\ris to produce an efficient electric motor and battery for it. Reducing the manufacturing and operating costs of these\rcomponents will result in reducing the overall costs of electric vehicles. In this study a new variant of the electric\rtravelling salesman problem with time windows (E-TSPTW) was proposed. The objective function of the problem is to\rminimize the required initial battery capacity of the electric vehicle. For this goal a new energy consumption model\rconsidering the load of the vehicle was proposed with three scenarios. The proposed model was solved with a hybrid\rsimulated annealing algorithm for all these scenarios. The performance of the proposed method was compared to the\rsolutions found by a mixed integer linear programming model. In order to construct series solution of nabla $(q h)$ -Bessel equation we present nabla $(q h)$ -analysis regarding nabla generalized quantum binomial nabla $(q h)$ -analogues of Taylor’s formula Gauss’s binomial formula Taylor series analytic functions analytic exponential function with its fundamental properties analytic trigonometric and hyperbolic functions. We emphasize that nabla $(q h)$ -Bessel equation recovers classical $h-and q-discrete$ Bessel equations. In addition we establish nabla $(q h)4 -Bessel function which is expressed in terms of an absolutely convergent series in nabla generalized quantum binomials and intimately demonstrate its reductions. To dampen these oscillations wide-area damping controllers (WADCs) have been introduced by utilizing wide-area measurement systems and synchronized phasor measurement units. In this paper we present a systematic approach for designing WADCs using a model predictive control (MPC) technique to damp interarea oscillations in the power system. The MPC controller computes optimal control signals for the excitation system of a remote generator where it will supplement the local power system stabilizers that are used as damping controllers. The performance of the proposed approach has been assessed on the IEEE 16-generator 68-bus test system and it is shown that the interarea oscillations can be effectively and robustly damped under varying operation conditions.Article Hearing the Voice of the Sector and Graduates and Transferring into the Curriculum(2020-11-30) Özlem CAKIR; ISIL KELLEVEZIRPurpose: The economic and social developments ofcountries are strictly dependent on the qualifiedgraduates/workforce that they have. The aim of thisstudy was to determine the quality and skill aspectsof graduates and their satisfaction level of laboursupply and demand in higher education.Research Methods: In this study the data related tothe Foreign Trade Program were collected by thefocus group (composed of program graduates andemployers) interview technique as one of thequalitative research methods. The data obtained fromthe interviews were subjected to content analysis andfindings were obtained on the areas of quality andskill mismatch between supply and demand throughcoding and identification of themes.Findings: The findings showed that employers have expectations in the field of supply chainknowledge Excel knowledge mastery of management information systems ERP knowledge warehouse management port operations logistics knowledge and basic export operations.However employers stated that these qualifications were insufficient in graduates and manyhad to be taught by them on the job. Graduates on the other hand have stated that when theythink about the difficulties they have experienced in the business world they realize theirshortcomings only when they start working.Implications for Research and Practice: According to the findings it is consideredappropriate to carry out such research with a participant profile in other fields of highereducation including representatives of the relevant business world academic representativesand representatives of the central authority. The connection between the labour market andthe education system can be established in a healthy way by carrying out the work in differenthigher education programsArticle Issues in the planning and design of university campuses in Turkey(2020) Berna YAYLALI; Ela CILUniversities have crucial importance in producing and transmitting knowledge and formulating an effective and critical public sphere that meets the public with the university population. Their spatial characteristics of universities also refer to an important position within the urban fabric: with dense students’ and academicians’ population they occupy a considerable amount of spaces in cities. Their spatial formations change over time as new buildings are added and student numbers increased. In that respect this article seeks to explore how the spatial configurations of university campuses have evolved over time in Turkey. In order to explore the changes in spatial layout of university campuses especially the organization of public spaces and their relations with the campus buildings we have narrowed our focus through a chronological reading. Two methods of collecting data are used: First we reviewed design articles about university campuses in architectural periodicals and online architecture databases. Second the Five Year Development Plans of Turkish State Planning Organization (DPT 5 Yıllık Planları) have been examined to follow the governmental considerations. In addition we made interviews with some of the architects who took part in the campus planning process of the cases that are selected for this article. In conclusion analysis of the spatial configuration of campuses in Turkey reveals some unexpected insights about particular design approaches of universities. The analysis of specific campuses in chronological order shows that it is possible to trace specific campus design tendencies that are peculiar to specific periods.Article İstanbul Hilton Otel’in Türkiye’deki Yüzyıl Ortası Otel Binaları Üzerindeki Etkileri(2019-07-31) Zeynep Tuna ULTAV; Funda UZ; Hande ATMACA ÇETİN1950’li yıllar Amerika’nın savaş sonrası elde ettiği güç ile dünya ekonomisini ve kültürünü etkilediği yıllardır. Gelişen tüketim kültürü ve ulaşım ağları ile mobilite artmış oteller dönemin sosyo-politik ekonomik ve mimari durumunun bir sonucu olarak çoğalmıştır. 1950’li yıllarda Amerika’da zincir oteller ortaya çıkarak deniz aşırı yayılmış ve mimari olarak Uluslararası Stil’in “Amerikan Modernizmi” olarak tanımlanan bir versiyonunu takip etmiştir. Uluslararası Stil’in modern oteller üzerinden yayılması en belirgin olarak Hilton Oteller ile olmuştur. Türkiye’ye ilk modern otel Hilton Otel ile gelmiş böylece 1950’li yıllarda Hilton Oteli sonrasında yapılan birçok otel Uluslararası Stil’den etkilenmiştir. Turizm tartışmalarının arkasında Hilton Otel sıkça bir model olarak kabul edilmiş mimarlıkta ise bu mimari dilin koşulsuz yayılması tartışmalara sebep olmuştur. Bu çalışmanın odak noktası 1950-1960 yılları arasında Uluslarası Stil’de yapılan ve İstanbul Hilton Oteli ile yapısal benzerlikler taşıyan Türkiye’deki otel binalarıdır. Hilton Oteli'nin 1950'lerde diğer otel binaları üzerindeki etkisi tartışılırken dönemin turizm tartışmalarına da yer verilerek Hilton Oteli’nin Türkiye’deki etkisi daha geniş bir perspektifte aktarılmıştır. Çalışma amacıyla seçilen oteller Hilton Oteli ile en büyük yapısal benzerliği taşıyan oteller arasından 1950’li yıllarda inşa edilmiş ya da inşaatına başlanmış olan Büyükada Anadolu Kulübü Oteli Çınar Otel Eskişehir Porsuk Oteli Büyük Efes Oteli Büyük Tarabya Oteli ile ele alınmış bu oteller üzerinden Uluslararası Stil’in ve Hilton Otel’in Türkiye’de modern turizm mimarisi üzerindeki izleri sürülmüştür.Article Kerf-kesme tekniği uygulanmış ahşapların eğilme davranışının deneysel analizi(2025-06-30) Yenal Akgün; Gökçe Kırkpınar; Matthieu Joseph PedergnanaTarih boyunca ekolojik faydaları ve hafifliği ile bilinen ahşap doğru tekniklerle işlendiğinde esneklik kabiliyetini arttırabilmektedir. Bu esneklik farklı mimari ürün ve mobilyaların üretilmesine ilham yaratmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı kerf kesim tekniği ile esneklik kazandırılmış farklı doğal ahşap numunelerinin esneklik düzeylerini ve bu düzeylerde taşıyabildikleri azami yükü incelemektir. Literatürde kerf kesim tekniklerinin farklı doğal ve endüstriyel ahşap ürünlerini ne kadar esnekleştirebildiğine dair çalışmalar olsa da kerf tekniğinin sağladığı esneklik ile taşıma kapasitesi arasındaki ilişki incelenmemiştir. Çalışma bu açıdan özgündür. Makalede öncelikle farklı ağaç türlerinin genel fiziksel özellikleri ve eğilme kapasiteleri incelenmiştir. Sonrasında ise iki etaplı bir deneysel çalışma ortaya konmuştur. Bu deneysel çalışmanın ilk aşamasında farklı kerf kesim tekniklerinin ahşabın esnekliğine etkisi ikinci aşamada ise üç farklı ahşap tipinin esneklik ve taşıma kapasiteleri araştırılmıştır. Sonuçlara göre dişbudağın en fazla esnekliğe sahip olduğu cevizin ise yük taşıma kapasitesi olarak dişbudaktan daha yüksek mukavemet gösterdiği dolayısıyla daha fazla mukavemet gerektiren tasarımlar için uygun olduğu belirlenmiştir.Article Citation - Scopus: 11Kurt Üzümü (Lycium barbarum L.) TBA değerleri kurt üzümü ekstraktının doğal antioksidan gibi davrandığını ve 28 günlük depolama süresince sazan sosisinde lipid oksidasyonunu geciktirdiğini göstermiştir. En düşük TVB-N içerikleri S2 (%2 kurt üzümü ekstrakı eklenen sazan sosisleri) ve S1 (%1 kurt üzümü ekstrakı eklenen sazan sosisleri) gruplarında bulundu. Kurt üzümü ekstraktı eklenen sazan sosislerinin toplam aerobik mezofilik bakteri (TAMB) sayıları kontrol örneğine göre daha düşük çıktı. Kurt üzümü ekstraktı mikroorganizma gelişimini engellemede çok etkiliydi. Konsantrasyon artışına bağlı olarak kurt üzümü eklenmesi sosis örneklerinde kısmen kırmızılığa neden oldu. Aroma ve renk değerleri bakımından en iyi puanlama S1 grubunda tespit edildi. Diğer yandan depolama süresindeki artışa bağlı olarak renk ve aroma değerleri de belirgin olarak azaldı.Article Citation - Scopus: 45Long term energy consumption forecasting using genetic programming(Association for Scientific Research, 2008-08-01) Ahmet S. In this paper a genetic programming approach is proposed to forecast long term electrical power consumption in the area covered by a utility situated in the southeast of Turkey. In this paper the PVRP with time windows and timespread constraints (PVRP-TWTS) is addressed which arises in the high-valueshipment transportation area. In the PVRP-TWTS period-specific demands of thecustomers must be delivered by a fleet of heterogeneous capacitated vehicles overthe several planning periods. Additionally the arrival times to a customer shouldbe irregular within its time window over the planning periods and the waiting timeis not allowed for the vehicles due to the security concerns. This study proposes novel mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) and constraint programming(CP) models for the PVRP-TWTS. Furthermore we develop several validinequalities to strengthen the proposed MILP and CP models as well as a lowerbound. Even though CP has successful applications for various optimizationproblems it is still not as well-known as MILP in the operations research field.This study aims to utilize the effectiveness of CP in solving the PVRP-TWTS. This study presents a CP model for PVRP-TWTS for the first time in the literature to the best of our knowledge. Having a comparison of the CP and MILP models can help in providing a baseline for the problem. We evaluate the performance ofthe proposed MILP and CP models by modifying the well-known benchmark setfrom the literature. While planning the steel cuttingoperations each item can be divided into smaller pieces then they can be recombinedby welding. The objective is to minimize both the trim loss and the number of thewelds. The problem can be seen as a natural generalization of the cutting stock problem(CSP) with skiving option [1] where recombining operation has a cost. In this paper amathematical model for the problem is given and a dynamic programming based heuristicalgorithm is proposed in accordance with the company needs. Furthermore a software which is based on the proposed heuristic algorithm is developed to use in MKA Company and its performance is analyzed by solving real-life problems in the steel industry. WELEPEBu makalede parabolik oluklu nemlendirici güneş kolektörü bazlı güneş enerjili desalinasyon sistemi (PHSC-SS) önerilmektedir. Amacı bazı önemli performans iyileştirme tekniklerini düz plaka nemlendirici güneş kolektörü bazlı desalinasyon sistemine (düz plaka HSC-SS) uygulamaktır. Genel sistem performansını önemli ölçüde iyileştirmek içindir. Bunlar arasında parabolik oluklu güneş yoğunlaştırıcılarının kullanımı ve nemlendirici güneş kolektörlerinin tahliye borulu kolektörlerden tasarlanması yer almaktadır. Sonuçlar optimum genel performans elde etmek için türbülanslı bir hava akışı rejimiyle çalışması gereken düz plakalı HSC-SS'nin aksine PHSC-SS'nin laminer bir hava akışı rejimiyle ve ısı kolektörü elemanında yüksek hava giriş ve çıkış sıcaklıklarıyla (atmosferik basınçta en az 55 °C ve 100 °C'den düşük) çalışması gerektiğini ortaya koymaktadır. 900 W/m2 gelen güneş ışınımı 2 m2 güneş kolektörü alanı ve 0 00042 kg/s hava akış hızı için PHSC-SS'nin maksimum enerji verimi ekserji verimi ve tatlı su üretkenliği sırasıyla %68 12 %14 87 ve 1.697 kg/saat olarak bulunmuştur. Aynı gelen güneş ışınımı güneş kolektörü alanı ve 0 1 kg/s hava akış hızı için düz plakalı HSC-SS'nin elde edilen değerleri sırasıyla %72 9 %1 12 ve atmosferik basınçta 30 °C'den düşük hava giriş ve çıkış sıcaklıkları için 1 07 - 2 923 kg/saat arasında olarak bulunmuştur. Bazı aşırı durumlarda düz plakalı HSC-SS'nin tatlı su verimliliği PHSC-SS'den daha yüksek olsa da laminer hava akımı rejiminin PHSC-SS'ye büyük avantajlar sağladığı belirtilmelidir. Bunlar kondenser girişindeki daha yüksek hava sıcaklıkları (suyun yoğuşma işlemi kolaylaştırması) yardımcı bir soğutma cihazına gerek olmaması (düz plakalı HSC-SS'te gereklidir) sistemin daha az mekanik titreşimi kondenser boyutunun küçülmesi ve hava üfleyiciler tarafından daha az enerji tüketilmesidir. Ayrıca PHSC-SS'nin üst sınırı hava akışı olmadan çalışan bir PHSC-SS'dir. Bu sistem kaynama noktasındaki su damlacıklarının absorberden buharlaştırılması ve ardından kondensere emilmesi ile çalışmaktadır. Bu bir flaş buharlaşmaya benzemektedir.Article Piranesi’s arguments in the Carceri(2018) FATMA IPEK EKGiovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) is an important Italian architect withhis seminal theses in the debates on the ‘origins of architecture’ and ‘aesthetics’. Heis numbered foremost among the founders of modern archaeology. But Piranesiwas misinterpreted both in his day and posthumously. One of the most importantvectors of approach yielding misinterpretation of Piranesi derived from the phe-nomenon comprising the early nineteenth-century Romanticist reception of Pi-ranesi’s character and work. Therefore the present study firstly demonstrates thatsuch observations derive not from an investigation of the work itself nor from anappraisal of the historical context but owe to the long-standing view in westernculture that identifies the creator’s ethos with the work and interprets the workso as to cohere with that pre-constructed ethos. Thus the paper aims at offering anew perspective to be adopted while examining Piranesi’s works. This perspectivelies within the very scope of understanding the reasons of the misinterpretations the post-Romanticist perception of the ‘artist’ and Piranesi’s main arguments onthe aesthetics origins of architecture and law.Article Reading 19th century architectural and interior space reflections of modernization through the literary space: Émile Zola’s Nana(2021) Zeynep Tuna ULTAV; Bahar SEZEN; Gizem GÜLER NAKIP; BÜŞRA AYDINThe interdisciplinary study of architecture across many fields adds meaning to architecture. Literature which is one of the areas that works together with architecture conveys information to the reader on many topics such as periods daily life practices social problems and human-space relations. Analysis of a literary work combines literature and architecture while expanding the boundaries of architecture thereby contributing to both disciplines. This study reads the spatial components drawn from social problems through one literary text. Specifically it reveals the social and spatial results of modernism experienced in 19th-century Paris in Nana (1880) the ninth book of Emile Zola’s (1840-1902) 20-book Rougon-Macquart series. A qualitative methodology was used for the literature review and analysis of the novel. This case study revealed two main conflicts at the birth of modernism: the issue of class discrimination and the issue of gender. It is displayed that such an interdisciplinary spatial reading can directly relate literary texts and architecture.
