Korku sinemasında bir alttür: Body horror filmlerinde cinsiyet temsilleri ve bedensel dönüşüm

Abstract

This study examines how gender representations are constructed within the scope of body horror, a subgenre of horror cinema, and how they are restructured through bodily transformation. Conducted within the framework of feminist film theory, psychoanalytic theory, and queer theory, the research argues that the body in cinema is not merely a visual object of horror, but also a narrative tool through which cultural anxieties related to gender, sexuality, and identity are reflected. In this context, the representation of the body in body horror films and how these representations intersect with gender norms are problematized. Within the scope of the research, four films—The Fly (1986), Alien (1979), Titane (2021), and The Substance (2024)—are analyzed using qualitative and descriptive analysis methods. The analyses evaluate how the female body is predominantly transformed through themes such as fertility, motherhood, and loss of control, while the male body is transformed in the context of power, loss of authority, and alienation. Themes such as the monstrous-feminine, the uncanny, trauma, the abject, and the performative nature of gender constitute the theoretical framework of the study. The findings reveal that the body horror subgenre offers significant narrative possibilities for questioning binary gender structures and transforming gender norms through the instability of the body. Through grotesque aesthetics and intense affective impact, this genre becomes a cinematic space where social fears are reproduced through the body. In this context, the study approaches body horror not only as an aesthetic form but also as a cultural narrative medium where gender politics are brought into discussion, aiming to contribute to both national and international literature.

Bu çalışma, korku sinemasının alt türlerinden biri olan body horror kapsamında cinsiyet temsillerinin nasıl inşa edildiğini ve bedensel dönüşüm yoluyla nasıl yeniden kurgulandığını incelemektedir. Feminist film kuramı, psikanalitik kuram ve queer kuram çerçevesinde yürütülen araştırma, sinemada bedenin yalnızca görsel bir dehşet nesnesi değil; aynı zamanda toplumsal cinsiyet, cinsellik ve kimliğe dair kültürel kaygıların yansıtıldığı bir anlatı aracı olduğunu savunmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, body horror filmlerinde bedenin temsili ve bu temsillerin toplumsal cinsiyet normlarıyla nasıl kesiştiği problematize edilmiştir. Araştırma kapsamında The Fly (1986), Alien (1979), Titane (2021) ve The Substance (2024) adlı dört film nitel ve betimsel analiz yöntemiyle incelenmiştir. Analizlerde, kadın bedeninin çoğunlukla doğurganlık, annelik ve kontrol kaybı temaları üzerinden; erkek bedeninin ise güç, iktidar kaybı ve yabancılaşma bağlamında nasıl dönüşüme uğradığı değerlendirilmiştir. Monstrous-feminine, tekinsizlik, travma, abject ve toplumsal cinsiyetin performatif doğası gibi temalar çalışmanın kuramsal çerçevesini oluşturmuştur. Elde edilen bulgular, body horror alt türünün ikili cinsiyet yapılarını sorgulamak ve bedenin istikrarsızlığı üzerinden toplumsal cinsiyet normlarını dönüştürmek açısından önemli anlatı olanakları sunduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Grotesk estetik ve yoğun duygulanımsal etkiler aracılığıyla bu tür, toplumsal korkuların beden üzerinden yeniden üretildiği bir sinemasal alan haline gelmektedir. Bu bağlamda çalışma, body horror türünü yalnızca estetik bir biçim olarak değil, aynı zamanda toplumsal cinsiyet politikalarının tartışıldığı kültürel bir anlatı alanı olarak ele alarak hem ulusal hem de uluslararası literatüre katkı sunmayı amaçlamaktadır.
