Moda ve giyim alanında cinsiyet akışkanlığına modern yaklaşım

Abstract

The ambiguity of the term 'gender-fluidity' has been increasing regarding its meaning in the contemporary society; and particularly when it relates to fashion and clothing, it is seen as the provocative dress code for genders. The thesis aims to analyze gender-fluidity with regard to fashion and clothing in contemporary society. The study also tries to provide explanation on how gender-fluidity evolves or has a connection to the historical anti-dress codes, and why it has been given a new term in contemporary society. Within this perspective, the historical terms such as cross-dressing and androgyny along with their significance in cultural and social background are also clarified to understand the current trend of gender-fluidity. Additionally, identity plays a significant part in this thesis, and it will be further discussed under the perspective of gender-fluid fashion, clothing and gender behavior. Building on the philosophy of Judith Butler's gender performativity, the construction of identity and how it performed with regard to gender-fluid individuals in society will be the essential part of the thesis. Furthermore, the thesis is conducted to give essential information and analysis on the literature, media campaigns, and fashion terminologies with the help of visual art practices in order to help understand the gender-fluid fashion and clothing and how it is affected by masculine hegemony and gender stereotyping. As a result of the research, a new approach regarding the delicate subject of the gender in society will be presented.

Cinsiyet akışkanlığı teriminin anlamının çağdaş toplumdaki belirsizliği artmaktadır ve söz konusu özellikle moda ve giyim olduğunda cinsiyetler için kışkırtıcı bir giyim türü olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Tezin konusu, çağdaş toplumlarda moda ve giyimde cinsiyet akışkanlığını analiz etmektir. Çalışma aynı zamanda cinsiyet akışkanlığının nasıl geliştiğine veya tarihteki giyim yasaklarıyla bağlantısı olup olmadığına ve çağdaş toplumlarda bunun için yeni bir terim oluşturulmasının sebebine yönelik açıklamalar sağlamaya çalışacaktır. Bu bağlamda, günümüzdeki cinsiyet akışkanlığı terimini anlayabilmek için, cross-dressing (karşı cins ile özdeşleşmiş kıyafetleri giymek), çift cinsiyetlilik ve bunların kültürel ve sosyal önemi de açıklanmıştır. Ayrıca, kimliğin de bu tezde önemli bir rol oynamasının yanı sıra, bu konu da, modada ve giyimde cinsiyet akışkanlığı ve cinsiyetlerin gösterdiği davranışlar kapsamında incelenecektir. Judith Butler'ın cinsiyet edimselliği felsefesine ek olarak, kimliğin oluşması ve bunun modern toplumlarda akışkan cinsiyetli bireyler üzerinde nasıl etkilere sahip olduğu da tezin önemli bir bölümünü oluşturmaktadır. Tez, literatür, medya kampanyaları ve moda terminolojisi konusunda bilgi verme amacını da içermekle birlikte, moda ve giyimde cinsiyet akışkanlığını ve bunun erkek egemenliği ve cinsiyet rollerinden nasıl etkilendiğini göstermek üzere görsel sanat uygulamaları da sunacaktır. Çalışmanın sonucunda ise toplumdaki hassas cinsiyet konusuna ilişkin yeni bir yaklaşım ortaya koyulacaktır.
