Technology-history juxtaposition within the spaces of cyberpunk literature and cinema: Reading Altered Carbon / Siberpunk edebiyat ve sinema mekanlarında teknoloji-tarih birlikteliği: Altered Carbon'u okumak

Abstract

Mimarlık ve içmimarlık alanları da edebiyat, sinema gibi farklı disiplinlerle etkileşim halindedir ve bu disiplinlerle mekânsal anlamda önemli bir buluşma noktasına sahiptir. Özellikle de gelecek tasarımları söz konusu olduğunda, bilim kurgu eserleri kuşkusuz mimari kesitte önemli bir rol oynamaktadırlar. Genellikle gelecek dünyaları kurgulayan bilim kurgu eserlerindeki mekân kavramını zamanla ilişkili bir şekilde ele almak, gelecek mekânlarını yaratmak konusunda fayda sağlayıcıdır. İçeriğinde bulundurduğu geçmiş-gelecek ve teknoloji-tarih ilişkisinden dolayı bu çalışmada bir bilim kurgu alt türü olan siberpunk türü incelemektedir. Siberpunk türünden izler taşıyan Richard K. Morgan'ın Altered Carbon romanı ve dizi uyarlaması, sahip olduğu mekânsal tasvirlerinden ötürü, çalışmanın örneklem alanı olarak belirlenmiştir. Çalışmada amaç siberpunk türü eserlerdeki teknoloji-tarih sentezinin gelecek tasarımları açısından tasarımcılara ne gibi faydalar sağlayacağını ortaya koymaktır. Çalışma, öncelikle mekân kavramının edebiyat ve sinemayla olan ilişkisini özellikle bilim kurgu özelinde tartışır ve ardından da siberpunk türü edebiyat ve sinemasını tanıtarak örneklem alanı olarak belirlenen Altered Carbon roman ve internet dizisinin detaylı analizlerini yapmaktadır. Çalışmada, eserin mekânsal analizleri kent ve mimari yapılar-iç mekânlar olmak üzere iki alt başlıkta incelenir. Belirlenen mekânlar önce sırasıyla romandan alınan alıntılar ve diziden alınan görüntüler ile teknoloji ve tarihsel tarz çerçevesiyle analiz edilmektedir. Sonuç olarak çalışma, siberpunk türünün mekânsal tasvirlerinin geleceğin mekânları tasarlanırken bir araç olarak kullanılabileceğini önermektedir. The fields of architecture and interiors also have an important spatial meeting point with different disciplines such as literature and cinema. Undoubtedly, science fiction works play an important role in architectural cross-section, especially when it comes to future designs. Dealing with the concept of space in relation to time in science fiction works, which generally construct future worlds, is beneficial in creating future spaces. Owing to the past-future and technology-historical style relationship it contains, the cyberpunk genre, which is a science fiction sub-genre, is examined in this study. Richard K. Morgan's Altered Carbon novel and its web series adaptation, which carries traces of the cyberpunk genre, is analyzed as the case study of the work, since it includes a variety of spatial descriptions. In this framework, the aim of the study is to understand how the technology-history juxtaposition in cyberpunk works can have the potential to guide designers in terms of future designs. The study first discusses the relationship between the concept of space and literature as well as cinema, especially in terms of science fiction genre, and then introduces cyberpunk literature and cinema and makes detailed analyzes of the Altered Carbon novel and web series, which is determined as a case study. In the study, the spatial analyzes of the work are examined under two sub-titles: the urban space, and architecture and interiors. The determined places are first analyzed in detail with the quotes taken from the novel and the images taken from the web series, in terms of technology-history juxtaposition. As a result, the study states that spatial depictions of the cyberpunk genre can be used as a tool while designing the spaces of the future.
