project.funder.name This will not be too short but I will try. I graduated from ITU in 1952 but starting an academic life required some sacrifices. Engineers who worked in industry were paid higher salaries than academics. I was offered an assistant position at the university but I did not start there, I needed some time to make a decision and meanwhile I fulfilled my military duty. After the military service I started working as Assistant Director at Salkımsöğüt PTT factory in Istanbul where I gained some engineering and administrative experience. In the meantime the idea of including the PTT factory in a more modern Research-Development Laboratory emerged. My colleagues and I were all very excited about this project, however it turned out that that establishing such a laboratory in a short time was almost impossible. (In fact that honor was given to Mr. Fikret Yücel many years later toward the end of the 60's). For this reason I did not want to stay there and lose more time. Relying on the financial help of my family I left my job at PTT where I worked for a year and started to work as an assistant at ITU. Short after I started I was sent to Michigan State University (MSU) to work on my doctorate with the encouragement and help of Professor Tarık Özker and Professor Bedri Karafakioğlu none of whom is alive now. I began my academic life in MSU (January 1960) literally. After my Ph.D. I had to stay at MSU for a few more years to take part in the System Science Project supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and to complete writing of a book based on the work done in the project. However ITU did not extend my leave and I had to resign from my post with a debt totaling twice the amount of the financial aid provided for me during my stay at MSU. Fortunately as a result of the project I participated in the System Science approach was incorporated into the curriculum of Electrical Engineering and I had the opportunity to do academic research working part-time in the Department of Electrical Engineering and System Science and part-time in the Engineering Research Institute for about ten years. I was promoted to full professorship in 1967. My desire was to return home and serve my country within a few years after Ph.D. but having resigned from ITU it was difficult to rejoin and I could return only if I could work in a university. Since I went abroad in 1957 I did not know at that time that METU was established. I learned about this when a Palestinian student who graduated from METU in 1965 came to MSU for graduate study. At least I could spend my sabbatical year in my home country. I did so too. Next year I met Professor Mustafa Parlar (deceased) at a conference in New York and he completed all procedures so that I spent the 1967-1968 academic year at METU. At that time TÜBİTAK had an initiative to establish a research institute and I was asked to set up the Research Unit. After spending the 1968-1969 academic year at MSU also planning the establishment of this unit I returned home in July 1969. Few colleagues and I prepared the strategic plan of the Research Unit that soon became operational in the office space allocated by the Electrical Engineering Department. The program of the Research Unit prepared by our group has been implemented without major revision for the next ten years. In 1972 all similar units hosted in METU ITU and Ege University were collected under the roof of Marmara Research Institute in Gebze. I do not want to go into more detail here. If you have any further questions in this regard I will be glad to answer.
