The Fetishistic Spectacle of Violence in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen: A Comparative Study of Alan Moore’s Graphic Novel and Its Film Adaptation

Alan Moore ve Dave Gibbons'ın Watchmen ([1986] 2014) adlı eseri son derece popüler bir çizgi roman olup, ataerkil ve kapitalist sisteme yönelik benzersiz ve yapıbozumcu yaklaşımıyla eleştirmenlerden büyük takdir kazanmıştır. Yönetmen Zack Snyder 2009 yılında çizgi romanı beyaz perdeye uyarlamıştır. Fakat yönetmenin orijinal esere sadık kalma konusunda titiz çabasına rağmen, eleştirmenler uyarlamayı, kaynak materyalin devrimci vizyonunu aktarmakta başarısız olduğu gerekçesiyle sert bir şekilde eleştirmiştir. Filmde kaynak materyalin özünü boğan bariz problemlerden biri, şiddet ve işkencenin fetişleştirilmesidir. Uyarlama şiddet yanlısı yasa dışı kanun infazcılarını baskın bakış olarak ele alırken, kurbanlarının parçalanmış bedenlerini izleyici tarafından tüketilebilecek bir imge olarak sunar. Çalışmada, Laura Mulvey'in 'Görsel Haz ve Anlatı Sineması' (1975) adlı eserinde ortaya koyduğu erkek bakışı kuramından yaralanarak fetişistik gösteri ile baskın fallosentrik değerler arasındaki önemli kesişimi araştırıyorum. Ayrıca, filmin fetişistik görsel dilinin Amerikan siyasetindeki şiddet ve güç söylemiyle nasıl kesiştiğini aydınlatmak için gerçek dünyadan örnekler de vermekteyim.

Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen ([1986] 2014) is an incredibly popular graphic novel and has been critically acclaimed for its unique and deconstructive approach to the patriarchal, capitalist system. The director Zack Snyder adapted the graphic novel to the silver screen in 2009. However, despite his meticulous effort to stay faithful to the original work, critics lambasted the adaptation for its failure to translate the revolutionary vision of the source material. One of the glaring problems in the film that suffocates the essence of the source material is the fetishization of violence and torture. The adaptation treats the violent vigilantes as the dominant gaze and the dismembered bodies of their victims as an image to be consumed by the audience. The aim of this thesis is to observe how the erotic spectacle of violence and gore in the adaptation disrupts the progressive, subversive, and deconstructive politics of the source material. I draw upon Laura Mulvey's delineation of the male gaze theory in 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema' (1975) to explore the pivotal intersection between the fetishistic spectacle and the dominant phallocentric values. This work also provides real-life examples from American politics to illuminate how the fetishistic visual language of the film intersects with American political discourse on violence and power.
