Abstract

This paper introduces the problem of location optimization of receivers for IoT-based infrastructures and its application to real-life case in İzmir Bornova. The main goal of this study is to determine the optimal number of gateways and their locations in order that the gateway deployment and installation cost can be minimized while satisfying demand capacity and coverage constraints. As a result the problem is formulated as an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) model and the Multi Service Capacitated Facility Location Problem (MSCFLP) is considered. In order to determine number of candidate gateway locations K-means algorithm is employed considering the exact locations of street lambs in Bornova as the potential location of gateways to install. A mathematical model is formulated and solved to determine the optimal number and locations of the gateways. In addition to exact model Sequential Solving Heuristic method is also suggested to be able to solve the large size problems in a reasonable amount of computational time. Obtained results are demonstrated and compared. Furthermore a decision support system is developed which employs the solution methodology. © 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
