Picturesque Atmosphere: A Method to Read Spatiality and Aesthetics in Verbal and Visual Artworks

Abstract

Bu tez on sekizinci yüzyılın güzel ve yüce kavramlarını, pitoresk ve on dokuzuncu yüzyıl yorumları da dâhil olmak üzere, mimari/çevresel mekânda atmosferik algı tartışmalarından türeyen kavramlarla ve çağdaş mekân atmosferi kuramlarıyla birlikte okumayı amaçlamaktadır. On sekizinci ve on dokuzuncu yüzyıl estetik kavramlarını günümüz atmosfer kavramlarıyla ilişkilendiren bu simbiyotik okuma yolu, çalışmayı hem geçmişte hem de günümüzde estetik veya atmosferik tartışmalar için tanımlanan çerçevelerin dışına çıkarır. Bu oluşumdan hareketle bu tez, çerçevenin içine ve dışına aynı anda bakarak geçmişle günümüz kuramları arasındaki estetik benzerlikleri ortaya çıkarmayı ve pitoresk atmosfer terimi aracılığıyla atmosferik çözümlemeler için bir okuma modeli önererek pitoresk kuram ve tasarımı bir köprü olarak kullanmayı amaçlamaktadır. Ancak çoğu İngiltere'de bulunan pitoresk bahçeleri ziyaret etmek ve estetik analizini yapmak bu tezin zamansal kapsamı açısından oldukça zor olduğundan, pitoresk atmosfer kavramını bu bahçelerin yazılı ve görsel sanatlarda (çoğunlukla şiir ve resim) on sekizinci ve on dokuzuncu yüzyılda üretilmiş temsilleri üzerinden inceledim. Dolayısıyla pitoresk ile atmosfer arasındaki bu kuramsal köprü, söz konusu sanat dalları için mekânsallık ve mimarlık merceğinden disiplinler arası bir okuma modeli de sağlamıştır.

This thesis aims to read the concepts of the beautiful and sublime of the eighteenth century, including the picturesque and nineteenth-century renditions, together with the contemporary theories of the spatial atmosphere and the notions deriving from the discussions of atmospheric perception in architectural/environmental space. This symbiotic reading path linking eighteenth-and nineteenth-century aesthetic concepts to our contemporary atmospheric notions leads the study out of the frames defined for aesthetic or atmospheric discussions in both past and the current days. Based on this formation, this thesis aims to unveil the aesthetic similarities between the past and present theories by looking inside the frame and outside of it at the same time, and to use the picturesque theory and design as a bridge by proposing a reading model for atmospheric analyses with the term, picturesque atmosphere. However, since it is very challenging for the time-based scope of this thesis to visit and make the aesthetic analysis of the picturesque gardens—mostly located in England—I examined the notion of the picturesque atmosphere via eighteenth-and nineteenth-century representations of those gardens through verbal and visual arts (mainly poetry and painting). This theoretical bridge between the picturesque and atmosphere, therefore, also provided an interdisciplinary reading model for the mentioned art branches, with a lens of spatiality and architecture.
