The Evolution of Debussy’s Music on Selected Piano Works

Abstract

This thesis, examines the evolution of Debussy's musical language in four selected piano works that represent different periods of his life. The study also demonstrates the significance of these works in the context of 20th century musical language. The first part of the study is dedicated to biographical aspects of Debussy's life and how different artistic trends influenced the composers musical language. The second section, aims to shed light on the relationship between Debussy's music and principles of 20th century composition for understanding the difficulties that may be encountered while analysing Debussy's music. In the third and final part of the study, the evolution of the composer's piano music is determined through the analytic methods set forth in the second part. The four pieces in question are: Arabesque No.1 (1888), Pour le Piano, Prelude (1901), L'isle Joyeuse (1904) and Pour les Huit Doigts (1915).

Bu tez, Debussy'nin müzikal dilinin gelişimini, hayatının farklı dönemlerini temsil eden dört adet seçilmiş piyano eseri üzerinden açıklamaktadır. Çalışma ayrıca, bu eserlerin 20. yüzyıl müzikal dili bağlamındaki yerini ve önemini göstermektedir. Çalışmanın ilk kısmı, Debussy'nin hayatının biyografik yönüne ve yaşadığı dönemdeki farklı sanatsal trendlerin bestecinin müzik dilini nasıl etkilediğine odaklanır. İkinci bölüm, Debussy'nin müziği analiz edilirken karşılaşabilecek zorlukları açıklamak için, Debusy'nin müziği ile 20. yüzyıl müzik kompozisyonun arasındaki ilişkiye ışık tutmayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmanın üçüncü ve son bölümünde ise bestecinin piyano müziğinin gelişimi, ikinci bölümde anlatılan analitik metotlarla belirlenir. Bu bölümde, söz konusu olan dört piyano eseri [Arabesque No.1 (1888), Pour le Piano, Prelude (1901), L'isleJoyeuse (1904) ve Pour les Huit Doigts (1915)] analiz edilmiştir.
