Abstract

The aim of the current thesis is to examine the acquisition of categorical color perception by investigating the impact of perceptual learning, while also replicating and expanding upon the earlier findings of Özgen and Davies (2002). In addition, whether categorical color perception is a high- or low-level effect is a subject of debates, as well. This study investigates this with the total of 25 participants. They underwent a 3-day training session focused on acquiring new color boundaries specifically within the green region. Following the training, their performance was assessed using a two-alternative forced-choice task both before and after the training, under two different conditions: successive and simultaneous presentation. Building upon previous literature, the current study proposed two hypotheses. (Hypothesis 1) Categorical perception effects can be learned through laboratory training. Participants will improve on the discrimination of pairs of colors across the learned category boundary. (Hypothesis 2) Learned categorical perception is a low-level perceptual phenomenon. Participants will show categorical perception effects on the simultaneous presentation task as well as the successive presentation task. The findings indicated that the current thesis successfully replicated and expanded upon the findings of Özgen and Davies (2002) in a more robust study using a perceptually uniform color space. Also, the thesis had its own unique findings by indicating a pure perception effect in simultaneous representation.

Bu çalışma, algısal öğrenmenin etkisini araştırarak kategorik renk algısını tartışmayı amaçlamakta ve aynı zamanda Özgen ve Davies'in (2002) daha önceki bulgularını tekrarlamayı ve genişletmeyi hedeflemektedir. Ayrıca, kategorik renk algısının yüksek ya da düşük seviye bir etki olup olmadığı bir tartışma konusudur. Bu amaçla, toplamda 25 katılımcı, özellikle yeşil bölgede yeni renk sınırları edinmeye odaklanan 3 günlük bir eğitim seansına tabi tutulmuştur. Eğitimden sonra, katılımcıların performansı, eğitim öncesi ve eğitim sonrası olmak üzere iki farklı koşul altında (ardışık ve eşzamanlı test) iki-alternatif zorunlu seçim görevi kullanılarak değerlendirilmiştir. Mevcut çalışma, önceki literatüre dayanarak iki hipotez önermiştir. (Hipotez 1) Kategorik renk algısı etkileri laboratuvar eğitimi yoluyla öğrenilebilir. Katılımcılar, öğrenilen kategori sınırı boyunca renk çiftlerinin ayırımında iyileşme gösterecektir. (Hipotez 2) Öğrenilen kategorik renk algısı, düşük düzeyde bir algısal olgudur. Katılımcılar hem eşzamanlı sunum görevinde hem de ardışık sunum görevinde kategorik renk algısı etkilerini gösterecektir. Bulgular, mevcut tezin Özgen ve Davies'in (2002) bulgularını algısal olarak tek tip bir renk uzayı kullanarak daha güçlü bir çalışmada başarılı bir şekilde tekrarladığını ve genişlettiğini göstermiştir. Ayrıca tez, eşzamanlı temsilde saf bir algı etkisine işaret ederek kendine özgü bulgular elde etmiştir.
