Abstract

The fantasy genre stands out as one of the most productive genres offering a playground independent of reality and based on imagination. J.R.R. Tolkien, with his world-building approach, has made significant contributions to the existence of architectural and spatial narratives, becoming one of the leading figures in this genre. The focus of this thesis is a case study on Tolkien's novel The Hobbit, one of the prominent works of fantasy literature. This study aims to highlight the interdisciplinary relationship between architecture, interiors and various art forms, especially within the context of the fantasy genre, and to emphasize the importance of this relationship. By examining J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit through its original literary form, graphic novel adaptation, and film trilogy, the goal is to uncover the evolutionary structure and impact of architectural and spatial narratives across different media. Consequently, this analysis of the various adaptations of The Hobbit underscores the enduring influence of spatial narratives in the fantasy genre and demonstrates the importance of these elements in storytelling. The findings reveal that architecture and interiors significantly contribute to the creation of immersive fictional worlds, shaping not only the progression of the narrative but also the overall spatial experience.

Fantastik tür; gerçeklikten bağımsız, hayal gücüne dayalı bir oyun alanı sunuyor oluşuyla bu alandaki en verimli türlerden biri olarak öne çıkar. J.R.R. Tolkien, dünya kurma yaklaşımıyla mimari ve mekânsal anlatıların varlığına önemli bir katkı sağlayarak bu türün önde gelen isimlerinden biri olmuştur. Bu tezin odak noktası, fantastik edebiyatın önde gelen eserlerinden biri olan Tolkien'in Hobbit (The Hobbit) adlı romanı üzerine yapılan bir örnek alan çalışmasıdır. Bu çalışma, özellikle fantastik tür bağlamında, mimarlık ile çeşitli sanat formları arasındaki disiplinler arası ilişkiyi ve bu ilişkinin önemini vurgulamayı amaçlamaktadır. J.R.R. Tolkien'in Hobbit eserinin, özgün edebi formu, grafik roman uyarlaması ve film üçlemesi üzerinden incelenerek, mimarlık, içmimarlık ve mekânsal anlatıların farklı medyalar üzerindeki evrimsel yapısının ve etkisinin ortaya çıkarılması hedeflenmektedir. Sonuç olarak, Hobbit'in farklı uyarlamaları üzerinden yapılan bu inceleme, fantastik türde mekânsal anlatıların kalıcı etkisini vurgulamakta ve bu unsurların hikâye anlatımındaki önemini göstermektedir. Bulgular, mimarlığın ve içmimarlığın sürükleyici kurgusal dünyaların yaratılmasındaki önemli katkılarını, yalnızca anlatının ilerleyişini değil, genel mekân deneyimini de şekillendirdiğini ortaya koymaktadır.
