Abstract
In this study, the progression of ballet has been examined starting from its birth as court dances in Italy during the renaissance era until it took the form of today's classical ballet, including the 19th century romantic period. This study focuses mainly on political, social and artistic factors which influenced the development of ballet and the changes they have induced on this form of art. The major political and social events in France -the ballet center of the time- have been analyzed in order to understand the historic evolution of ballet. Giselle, (recorded stage performance from Bolshoi Ballet, 2nd August 2015), dating from the romantic period and being one of the most frequently staged examples of ballet, has been studied in this thesis in terms of its choreography, music, libretto, setting and costumes. Being a building block of the romantic period, Giselle takes its place in the repertoires of most of the ballet companies today and its variations are used in academic ballet education. To understand the romantic period Giselle, examining the historical process of that time is really crucial. Therefore, this study refers to historical, technical and aesthetic analyses and written and visual materials to clarify which factors influenced classical ballet based on the example of Giselle and to understand what kind of a creation process it was subjected to. Two major objectives of this thesis are to produce an academic work for better understanding of historical progress of ballet through studying Giselle and to provide a reference source that can be added to the balet literature.
