Article Citation - Scopus: 2Biophilic dimensions of products and their effects on user preferences(Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture, 2022) Hakan ÇETİNKAYA; Gülname TURAN; Miray BOĞA; Turan, Gülname; Çetinkaya, Hakan; Boğa, MirayBiophilia is hypothesized as one of the defining concepts guiding human preferences of everyday life. Although “biophilia” has been well integrated as a design approach in Architectural and Urban Design it is yet to develop in industrial design. Employing a two-staged approach we aimed to define the biophilic characteristics of a product multidimensionally and examine their effects on the users’ preferences. The first stage consisted of empirical studies to describe the biophilic dimensions. This endeavor yielded a word set (N=78) that qualifies the biophilic dimensions (N=6). The words obtained consisted of biophilic design values and the hypothetical biophilic product dimensions that were proposed by researchers. Also we obtained a set of product images (N=18) to be used throughout the study. The second stage was designed to explore the effects of biophilia on user preferences. An expert group (N=120) assessed the associations between the words and product sets. Also a user group (N=1.206) rated how much they preferred these products. The data obtained from the experts and the users were analyzed to examine how the biophilic dimensions predicted the user preferences by regression analyses conducted on SPSS 27. The results revealed that the functional dimension has a significant effect on user preferences in both biophilic and non-biophilic/ biophobic cases while the psychological dimension has a significantly negative effect on user preferences just in non-biophilic/biophobic cases.Article Issues in the planning and design of university campuses in Turkey(2021) Berna YAYLALI; Ela CILUniversities have crucial importance in producing and transmitting knowledge and formulating an effective and critical public sphere that meets the public with the university population. Their spatial characteristics of universities also refer to an important position within the urban fabric: with dense students’ and academicians’ population they occupy a considerable amount of spaces in cities. Their spatial formations change over time as new buildings are added and student numbers increased. In that respect this article seeks to explore how the spatial configurations of university campuses have evolved over time in Turkey. In order to explore the changes in spatial layout of university campuses especially the organization of public spaces and their relations with the campus buildings we have narrowed our focus through a chronological reading. Two methods of collecting data are used: First we reviewed design articles about university campuses in architectural periodicals and online architecture databases. Second the Five Year Development Plans of Turkish State Planning Organization (DPT 5 Yıllık Planları) have been examined to follow the governmental considerations. In addition we made interviews with some of the architects who took part in the campus planning process of the cases that are selected for this article. In conclusion analysis of the spatial configuration of campuses in Turkey reveals some unexpected insights about particular design approaches of universities. The analysis of specific campuses in chronological order shows that it is possible to trace specific campus design tendencies that are peculiar to specific periods.Article Citation - Scopus: 2Issues in the planning and design of university campuses in turkey(Istanbul Teknik Universitesi Faculty of Architecture, 2021) Berna Yaylali-Yildiz; Ela Çil; Yaylali, Berna; Cil, ElaUniversities have crucial importance in producing and transmitting knowledge and formulating an effective and critical public sphere that meets the public with the university population. He is numbered foremost among the founders of modern archaeology. But Piranesi was misinterpreted both in his day and posthumously. One of the most important vectors of approach yielding misinterpretation of Piranesi derived from the phenomenon comprising the early nineteenth-century Romanticist reception of Piranesi’s character and work. Therefore the present study firstly demonstrates that such observations derive not from an investigation of the work itself nor from an appraisal of the historical context but owe to the long-standing view in western culture that identifies the creator’s ethos with the work and interprets the work so as to cohere with that pre-constructed ethos. Thus the paper aims at offering a new perspective to be adopted while examining Piranesi’s works. This perspective lies within the very scope of understanding the reasons of the misinterpretations the post-Romanticist perception of the ‘artist’ and Piranesi’s main arguments on the aesthetics origins of architecture and law. © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Literature which is one of the areas that works together with architecture conveys information to the reader on many topics such as periods daily life practices social problems and human-space relations. Analysis of a literary work combines literature and architecture while expanding the boundaries of architecture thereby contributing to both disciplines. This study reads the spatial components drawn from social problems through one literary text. Specifically it reveals the social and spatial results of modernism experienced in 19th-century Paris in Nana (1880) the ninth book of Emile Zola’s (1840-1902) 20-book Rougon-Macquart series. A qualitative methodology was used for the literature review and analysis of the novel. This case study revealed two main conflicts at the birth of modernism: the issue of class discrimination and the issue of gender. It is displayed that such an interdisciplinary spatial reading can directly relate literary texts and architecture.Article Reading 19th century architectural and interior space reflections of modernization through the literary space: Émile zola’s nana(Istanbul Teknik Universitesi Faculty of Architecture, 2021) Büşra Aydin; Bahar Sezen; Gizem Güler Nakip; Zeynep Tuna Ultav; Nakıp, Gizem Güler; Güler Nakip, Gizem; Tuna Ultav, Zeynep; Sezen, Bahar; Aydın, Büşra; Ultav, Zeynep TunaThe interdisciplinary study of architecture across many fields adds meaning to architecture. The changing needs of society negligible conservation awareness and interventions in housing units due to urban renewal policies negatively affect historical continuity and permanence. It is therefore important for conducting multi-layered studies on the analysis and documentation of housing architecture and interiors which are representative of the period. The aim of this paper is interpreting modern architecture through housing heritage and analysing the architectural features residential life proposals and modernist design approaches of selected interior spaces. In this context Karşıyaka İzmir which has a qualified housing stock on the subject and is in danger of losing its current housing stock in a rapid transformation has been determined as a case area. Within the scope of this paper the modernist architectural features and interior practices of four apartment buildings built between 1965-1980 in Donanmacı District have been revealed. The selected time range was identified to include periods that are important for Turkey’s housing architecture - the periods of rapid development and modernization. The method includes literature review sample identification photography shooting archive scanning transferring data to digital media and data analysis. The analysis which contains the facades and common areas of the apartments and plan schemes and interior features of the flats has enabled the interpretation of design culture and the revival of apartment buildings as modern housing heritage values. Written and visual documentation of the apartments and interiors made the effects of the modernization process more visible and permanent.
