The central tenet of his philosophy was that talent is not inborn, it can be gained through proper education. Therefore assuming that a child does not have some physical handicap 'every child can play'. Eventually it became one of the most popular teaching methods in the world. Suzuki started with the insight that if all children learn to speak their native tongues with the utmost fluency they must have the ability to learn to play an instrument fluently. The method is thus referred to as the 'Mother Tongue Method'. He believed that if a child starts at an early age learns with small steps and uses a violin of an appropriate size he or she could play the violin. The difference between the Mother Tongue Method and other traditional methods is that it starts at a very early age and includes the family - especially the mother - in the learning process. The formation of a cooperative triangle of teacher-parent-student is very important. Perhaps the most important factor in the success of this method is that Suzuki believed that children need to be taken seriously and that if they are they have the ability to learn and achieve anything.Article A CLUB BELONGS TO A CITY- A REGION- AND A COUNTRY: ATHLETIC CLUB DE BILBAO(ISTANBUL UNIV PRESS ISTANBUL UNIV RECTORATE, 2021) Mertcan Akan; Zaloa Zabala Inchaurraga; Akan, Mertcan; Zabala Inchaurraga, Zaloa; M Unver; M TanriverdiEuskal Herria which means Basque country refers not only to a geographical region but also to a society culture and thought. The Civil War that took place in Spain between 1936-1939 and the following Franco period (1939-1975) have played a critical role in shaping the memory of the Basque society and forming the present identity. The city of Bilbao which is the center of the country's largest region Bizkaia (Vizcaya) is also one of the places where the Basque identity and memory are being lived and kept living densely. The post-Franco period and the flood disaster in 1983 triggered a social cultural artistic and architectural transformation process in Bilbao city throughout which the city left its idyllic and industrial identity behind. This experience made Bilbao one of the most specific examples of how a city can be transformed by adhering to its historical origins. The purpose of this article is to emphasize the active role played by the Athletic Club one of the most important clubs in the institutionalization of modem football in Spain and how a sport club is owned by a city and its society. Carrying out a rare policy in contemporary industrial football with the mission of being the representative of the Basque country the club continues its struggle with athletes trained mostly from quarry. In this sense Athletic Club managed to bring the local struggle of its own lands together to a global stage. Thus as a sport club the Athletic Club has been = so effective in the information of identity and city culture that it has become one of the rare examples of this in the world.Article A Feminist Critique of Femvertising: The Example of Dove's My Hair Is beyond the Rules Campaign(ANKARA UNIV FAC COMMUNICATION, 2021) Burcu Dabak Ozdemir; Ozdemir, Burcu DabakThis study uses Dove's (Turkish) TV advertisement My Hair Is beyond the Rules to develop a feminist critique of the new advertising method known as femvertising. The study begins by identifying four common points shared by post-feminist and femvertising discourse: (1) love yourself or love your body (2) your decisions are important (3) trust yourself and (4) buy to feel good. The study then critiques these four points from a feminist perspective: The first point contradicts feminist body politics. The second point is a result of neoliberal individualism and contradicts the idea of feminist gathering. The third point misappropriates feminist political and ideological concepts by placing them into an apolitical cultural climate. And the last point embraces commodity feminism.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3A Framework Model for Data Reliability in Wireless Sensor Networks(IEEE, 2016) Ilker Kalayci; Tuncay Ercan; Ercan, Tuncay; Kalayci, IlkerIn this study a model for data reliability in wireless sensor networks is proposed in which machine learning methods are used. Proposed framework includes data modelling missing data prediction anomaly detection data fusion and trust mechanism phases. Thus temporal analysis is performed on the preprocessed sensor data and missing data are predicated. Then outliers on collected data are detected on the cluster head nodes by using Eta one-class Support Vector Machines. If an event is detected data are fused and then send to sink. If an anomaly is detected for a node's data the trust weight of the node is decreased.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1A Measurement Technique For Determination of Power Levels of Different Propagation Modes in Circular Waveguides(IEEE, 2020) Ceyhan Turkmen; Esra Alkin; Mustafa Secmen; Secmen, Mustafa; Turkmen, Ceyhan; Alkin, EsraThis study describes a measurement technique for detecting the power levels of different propagation modes in a circular waveguide in the mod converter structure from a rectangular waveguide to a circular waveguide. Specially designed SMA-waveguide adapters are generally used to measure these power levels of propagating modes inside the circular waveguide. While these adaptors can measure power level of desired transmitted mode they are inadequate to obtain suppression levels of other propagation modes simultaneously. Without need of special adapters the technique proposed in this study can determine the amplitudes of different propagation modes in the waveguide at the same time by using 2-port S-parameter values belonging to two identical mode converters. This method has been verified by a rectangular TE10 - circular TM01 mod converter designed and manufactured at center frequency of about 11.4 GHz.Article A Method Implementation in the Intermedia Agenda-Setting Theory Research: The Case of Hurriyet Online and Twitter(ANKARA UNIV FAC COMMUNICATION, 2017) Gizem Melek; Melek, GizemUnderstanding the relationship between the mainstream media and social networks in a correct and healthy way has become increasingly important today. In this problem the main orthogonal cross aisle which is very common to be seen in warehouses to facilitate travel between locations is planned to be designed as discrete manner such as tunnels along picking aisles. Hence the problem of locating these tunnels along picking aisles so as to increase efficiency of order picking operations which is one of the most costly and the most related operations with the order delivery time in warehouses is propounded. Additionally we develop a new dynamic programming based polynomial time algorithm to calculate optimal length of order picking tour in this new design problem. Hence this algorithm provides very quick solutions even for large pick list sizes. The computational performance of this algorithm is compared with Held-Karp branch and bound algorithm which is a well-known algorithm for travelling salesman problem. Last we solve an example problem and explain how the algorithm is implemented to generate optimal tour.Article Citation - WoS: 1A Quantitative Study On The Female And Male Employees' Expectations From Management When Coping With Stress(ESKISEHIR OSMANGAZI UNIV FAC EDUCATION, 2014) Vesile Ayca Yamuc; Duygu Turker; Turker, Duygu; Özmen, Duygu Türker; Yamuç, Vesile AyçaStress which can be constructive in a certain degree becomes a problem that threatens the physiological and psychological health of individuals depending on the increasing competitiveness in the organizations. Although the literature provides a significant knowledge on the antecedents and consequences of organizational stress there is no sufficient information about what employees expect from their management when coping with stress. In order to fill this void this study first reviews the organizational strategies in the literature and then the employees' expectations from their management during this process were analyzed on a sample of 42 whitecollar female and male workers in a manufacturing firm in Izmir Ataturk Organize Sanayi Bolgesi (IAOSB) with following a semi-structured interview methodology. The results of study reveal that employees expect strategies regarding with their job identification reducing the level of conflict implementation of a fair payment policy etc.Article Aging as an Ideological Discourse in Local Cartoons: The Example of TRT Cocuk(MARMARA UNIV FAC COMMUNICATION, 2020) Burcu Dabak Ozdemir; Urun Yildiran Onk; Onk, Urun Yildiran; Ozdemir, Burcu Dabak; Yıldıran, Ürün ÖnkThe representations of the elderly in cartoons provide a great opportunity to discuss the position of aging referring to ideology and power in social relations. This study aims to examine how the elderly individuals are represented in Turkish children's cartoons on television. The research focusses on TRT Cocuk channel due to its high ratings among children's channels and its emphasis on producing local narratives. In this regard this research is limited to the analysis of three cartoons and their characters, Maysa ve Bulut (a member of a larger group than the family) Rafadan Tayfa (the elder of the neighborhood) and Kardesim Ozi (a family member). Characters in these cartoons are analysed by a qualitative content analysis with reference to the theories in aging. Maysa ve Bulut emphasizes neo-conservatism through a traditional narrative highlighting positive relationship between elderly characters and the children. Rafadan Tayfa narrates the positive transformation and the rediscovery of aging in neo-liberal neighborhoods. Finally Kardesim Ozi portrays the hybrid experience of elderly individuals who cannot develop adequate relationships with their surroundings and are stuck between neo-conservatism and neo-liberal economy. In this regard the representation of the elderly and elderly-children relationships in cartoons coincide with the discourses produced by neo-conservatism in Turkey's cultural arena despite their different depictions.Article AN ANALYSIS OF THE DIES IRAE MOTIF IN VARIOUS PIANO WORKS BY SERGEI RACHMANINOFF(ANADOLU UNIV, 2020) Uyesi Basar Can Kivrak; Kivrak, Uyesi Basar CanThis study involves an exploration of the origin of the Dies Irae theme together with the analysis of several piano works by Sergei Rachmaninoff in which the theme has been incorporated. The Dies Irae theme has been a source of inspiration for many musicians throughout the history of music and has attracted the attention of generations of composers for centuries finding place in both sacred and secular music. Having largely been incorporated in sacred music until the Romantic era the Dies Irae theme has increasingly appeared in secular compositions during this period in the works of Hector Berlioz Franz Liszt Sergei Rachmaninoff and many others. Sergei Rachmaninoff is among the leading composers who have most frequently incorporated the theme or its small motifs in their works. Whether explicitly or subtly he has used the theme in his works for piano as well as orchestral and vocal music. Altogether it is beyond doubt that Sergei Rachmaninoff has nourished a special interest in the Dies Irae theme. The analysis of the utilization of this theme through examples selected from his works is thought to be an important step in enlightening his musical approach. In this respect the examples selected for the study are mostly his works for solo piano, a composition for two pianos and one piano work with orchestral accompaniment.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 5An Embedded System Vehicle Tracking System Application(IEEE, 2016) Sadik Arslan; Mustafa Gunduzalp; Ercument Turk; Gunduzalp, Mustafa; Arslan, Sadik; Turk, ErcumentIn this study an embedded system vehicle tracking applications have been realized. Besides data enhancing methods such as estimating missing data deduplication noise removal, anomaly detection is important in terms of finding data patterns which are out of normal data. This stage influences next analysis and decision processes and plays an important role in determining events faults or unexcepted but meaningful patterns. This study proposes the Histogram Based Outlier Score (HBOS) method to detect anomalies in data acquired by wireless sensor networks. In respect to anomaly detection methods used in this area such as data classification data clustering statistical distance based and support vector machines based approaches histogram based algorithms are unsupervised and provide fast solutions.Article Archeology of a Vanishing Typology: Motels in the Geography of Turkey(YILDIZ TECHNICAL UNIV FAC ARCHITECTURE, 2020) Gokcecicek Savasir; Zeynep Tuna UltavEncountered as a vanishing typology in Turkey's geography motels are the focus of this study. In this context Establishing a framework from the precedents that arouse in the American context at the beginning of the twentieth century and European context in midcentury the motel typology in tourism architecture in Turkey was analyzed in spatial economic and socio-cultural aspects with their history over half a century. This study attempted to sought the traces of the transformation that this typology went through in a global context considering transformation processes and semantic shifts within the historical context that generates them. In this study conducted to reveal the concepts and qualities related to the realms of architecture and tourism through motels having a significant place among tourism accommodation the architectural features of motels such as location scale and form and the transformations of motel enterprises that have lost their popularity within consumption culture were examined through literature review supported with visuals. It is possible to state that motel typology as a unique typology in terms of its location in the city and its small scale as well as its formal and functional simplicity and its spatial comfort offers its users a new way of life through its original meaning. However the historical examples in Turkey (except for Emniyet Motel Florya and Kilyos Establishment A and B Motels TUSAN Motel chain and Cizmecioglu Motel) do not fit this definition. To put it more precisely it is difficult to see the implementation of motel typology in its original sense in the context of Turkey. The meaning of Motel typology has changed in parallel with a shift in tourism understanding focusing on coastal settling and has found its local interpretation in Turkey.Conference Object Automated Clustering of Large Data Sets Based on a Topology Representing Graph(IEEE, 2009) Kadim Tasdemir; Taşdemir, KadimA powerful method in analysis of large data sets where there are many natural clusters with varying statistics such as different sizes shapes density distribution is the use of self-organizing maps (SOMs) [1]. However further processing tools such as visualization interactive clustering are often necessary to capture the clusters from the learned SOM knowledge. A recent visualization scheme CONNvis [2] and interactive clustering from CONNvis utilizes the data topology for SOM knowledge representation by using a weighted Delaunay graph CONN. In this paper an automated clustering scheme for SOMs. SOMcluster which is a two-level clustering of CONN by the skills obtained in the interactive process is proposed. It is shown that SOMcluster which does not require the number of clusters a priori is used successfully for automated segmentation of a remote sensing spectral image which has many clusters some of which were unidentified in previous works.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 10Bi-Objective green vehicle routing problem minimizing carbon emissions and maximizing service level(GAZI UNIV FAC ENGINEERING ARCHITECTURE, 2023) Ozgur Kabadurmus; Mehmet Serdar Erdogan; Erdoğan, Mehmet Serdar; Kabadurmus, OzgurIn this study a bi-objective Green Vehicle Routing Problem is presented as an extension of the well-known Vehicle Routing Problem. Green Vehicle Routing Problem aims to improve routing decisions of companies using Alternative Fuel Vehicles to reduce carbon emissions. The presented problem herein has two objectives that are the minimization of total carbon emissions and the maximization of service level. While total carbon emission is assumed to be proportional to total distance cargo delivery time window violations of customers are considered as an indicator of service level. The problem was modeled as Mixed-Integer Linear Programming and epsilon-constraint method which is a multi-objective optimization method is developed to solve it. To effectively solve large problem instances a clustering-based heuristic method is proposed. The heuristic method achieved a good performance by finding near Pareto-optimal solutions that are found by the MILP model. Our proposed mathematical model and heuristic method are tested on seven realistically designed hypothetical case studies. According to the results the minimization of carbon emission and maximization of service level are two conflicting objectives. As the service level increases the number of vehicles and carbon emissions also increase. As carbon emission increases and time windows violation decreases more vehicles and alternative fuel stations are used.Article Celebrities in Digital Activism: An Evaluation of 'Ahbap Platformu'(ISTANBUL UNIV FAC COMMUNICATION, 2019) Ebru Gokaliler; Ezgi SaatciogluWith the power to speak to a wide audience celebrities can create an awareness in society and mobilization can be ensured by transfering meaning between celebrity identity and an activist purpose.
