Article Citation - WoS: 1A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO SUZUKI TALENT EDUCATION(ANADOLU UNIV, 2016) Zehra Sak Brody; Brody, Zehra SakThe Suzuki teaching method was created by Japanese violinist and pedagogue Shinichi Suzuki. The central tenet of his philosophy was that talent is not inborn, it can be gained through proper education. Therefore assuming that a child does not have some physical handicap 'every child can play'. Eventually it became one of the most popular teaching methods in the world. Suzuki started with the insight that if all children learn to speak their native tongues with the utmost fluency they must have the ability to learn to play an instrument fluently. The method is thus referred to as the 'Mother Tongue Method'. He believed that if a child starts at an early age learns with small steps and uses a violin of an appropriate size he or she could play the violin. The difference between the Mother Tongue Method and other traditional methods is that it starts at a very early age and includes the family - especially the mother - in the learning process. The formation of a cooperative triangle of teacher-parent-student is very important. Perhaps the most important factor in the success of this method is that Suzuki believed that children need to be taken seriously and that if they are they have the ability to learn and achieve anything.Article A Method Implementation in the Intermedia Agenda-Setting Theory Research: The Case of Hurriyet Online and Twitter(ANKARA UNIV FAC COMMUNICATION, 2017) Gizem Melek; Melek, GizemUnderstanding the relationship between the mainstream media and social networks in a correct and healthy way has become increasingly important today. Therefore knowing and practicing the scientific methods that will comprehend and test this relationship in the best and the most sound way is a serious need as well. Therefore by borrowing a model from a previous research from the USA this article describes the method of a validity and reliability tested work designed to understand the relationship between Hurriyet Online and Twitter agendas. Thus the aim is to make the methods used across the world better understood in Turkey. The implementation of these methods will undoubtedly make a great contribution to the agenda-setting literature in Turkey and will strengthen the work done in this area.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 10A new warehouse design problem and a proposed polynomial-time optimal order picking algorithm(GAZI UNIV FAC ENGINEERING ARCHITECTURE, 2018) Omer Ozturkoglu; Deniz Hoser; Hoşer, Deniz; Öztürkoğlu, ÖmerIn this study we propose a new design problem that relates to orientation of cross aisles in warehouses. In this problem the main orthogonal cross aisle which is very common to be seen in warehouses to facilitate travel between locations is planned to be designed as discrete manner such as tunnels along picking aisles. Hence the problem of locating these tunnels along picking aisles so as to increase efficiency of order picking operations which is one of the most costly and the most related operations with the order delivery time in warehouses is propounded. Additionally we develop a new dynamic programming based polynomial time algorithm to calculate optimal length of order picking tour in this new design problem. Hence this algorithm provides very quick solutions even for large pick list sizes. The computational performance of this algorithm is compared with Held-Karp branch and bound algorithm which is a well-known algorithm for travelling salesman problem. Last we solve an example problem and explain how the algorithm is implemented to generate optimal tour.Article Citation - WoS: 1A Quantitative Study On The Female And Male Employees' Expectations From Management When Coping With Stress(ESKISEHIR OSMANGAZI UNIV FAC EDUCATION, 2014) Vesile Ayca Yamuc; Duygu Turker; Turker, Duygu; Özmen, Duygu Türker; Yamuç, Vesile AyçaStress which can be constructive in a certain degree becomes a problem that threatens the physiological and psychological health of individuals depending on the increasing competitiveness in the organizations. Although the literature provides a significant knowledge on the antecedents and consequences of organizational stress there is no sufficient information about what employees expect from their management when coping with stress. In order to fill this void this study first reviews the organizational strategies in the literature and then the employees' expectations from their management during this process were analyzed on a sample of 42 whitecollar female and male workers in a manufacturing firm in Izmir Ataturk Organize Sanayi Bolgesi (IAOSB) with following a semi-structured interview methodology. The results of study reveal that employees expect strategies regarding with their job identification reducing the level of conflict implementation of a fair payment policy etc.Article Aging as an Ideological Discourse in Local Cartoons: The Example of TRT Cocuk(MARMARA UNIV FAC COMMUNICATION, 2020) Burcu Dabak Ozdemir; Urun Yildiran Onk; Onk, Urun Yildiran; Ozdemir, Burcu Dabak; Yıldıran, Ürün ÖnkThe representations of the elderly in cartoons provide a great opportunity to discuss the position of aging referring to ideology and power in social relations. This study aims to examine how the elderly individuals are represented in Turkish children's cartoons on television. The research focusses on TRT Cocuk channel due to its high ratings among children's channels and its emphasis on producing local narratives. In this regard this research is limited to the analysis of three cartoons and their characters, Maysa ve Bulut (a member of a larger group than the family) Rafadan Tayfa (the elder of the neighborhood) and Kardesim Ozi (a family member). Characters in these cartoons are analysed by a qualitative content analysis with reference to the theories in aging. Maysa ve Bulut emphasizes neo-conservatism through a traditional narrative highlighting positive relationship between elderly characters and the children. Rafadan Tayfa narrates the positive transformation and the rediscovery of aging in neo-liberal neighborhoods. Finally Kardesim Ozi portrays the hybrid experience of elderly individuals who cannot develop adequate relationships with their surroundings and are stuck between neo-conservatism and neo-liberal economy. In this regard the representation of the elderly and elderly-children relationships in cartoons coincide with the discourses produced by neo-conservatism in Turkey's cultural arena despite their different depictions.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 10Bi-Objective green vehicle routing problem minimizing carbon emissions and maximizing service level(GAZI UNIV FAC ENGINEERING ARCHITECTURE, 2023) Ozgur Kabadurmus; Mehmet Serdar Erdogan; Erdoğan, Mehmet Serdar; Kabadurmus, OzgurIn this study a bi-objective Green Vehicle Routing Problem is presented as an extension of the well-known Vehicle Routing Problem. Green Vehicle Routing Problem aims to improve routing decisions of companies using Alternative Fuel Vehicles to reduce carbon emissions. The presented problem herein has two objectives that are the minimization of total carbon emissions and the maximization of service level. While total carbon emission is assumed to be proportional to total distance cargo delivery time window violations of customers are considered as an indicator of service level. The problem was modeled as Mixed-Integer Linear Programming and epsilon-constraint method which is a multi-objective optimization method is developed to solve it. To effectively solve large problem instances a clustering-based heuristic method is proposed. The heuristic method achieved a good performance by finding near Pareto-optimal solutions that are found by the MILP model. Our proposed mathematical model and heuristic method are tested on seven realistically designed hypothetical case studies. According to the results the minimization of carbon emission and maximization of service level are two conflicting objectives. As the service level increases the number of vehicles and carbon emissions also increase. As carbon emission increases and time windows violation decreases more vehicles and alternative fuel stations are used.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 6Control of make-to-stock production systems with setup costs(GAZI UNIV FAC ENGINEERING ARCHITECTURE, 2020) Sinem Ozkan; Onder Bulut; Özkan, Sinem; Bulut, ÖnderThis study considers the joint control of production and inventory in a Markovian make-to-stock environment with parallel production lines production start-up costs several customer classes and lost sales. At the production completion and demand arrival epochs there are two types of decisions. The first is the determination of the number of lines that should be active (producing) and the second one is whether to satisfy an arriving demand. Especially at the states where inventory position is low it would be more economical to reject the arriving demands of lower priority classes and reserve on-hand stock for future demands of more valuable classes. This study contributes to the control literature of make-to-stock systems with the simultaneous consideration of fixed production costs multiple lines and several customer classes. The dynamic programming formulation of the system which we model as a Markov Decision Process is developed by defining a two-dimensional system state vector. The model is solved with the value iteration algorithm. It is shown with the numerical examples that the optimal production and stock rationing policies have dynamic structures. Due to the dynamic nature of the optimal policies we also propose easy-to-apply and well-performing alternative policies. The proposed production policy is an extended version of the twocritical-number policy which is frequently considered in the literature. The proposed rationing policy is a dynamic one that considers the value of outstanding production orders in addition to inventory level.Article Design and production of ıntegrated compact M-SIW filter-patch antenna with out-of-band suppression for 5G applications(PAMUKKALE UNIV, 2024) Kemal Guvenli; Sibel Yenikaya; Mustafa Secmen; Berkay Emin; Guvenli, Kemal; Yenikaya, Sibel; Emin, Berkay; Secmen, MustafaIn this article the Integrated M-SIW (Microstrip-Substrate Integrated Waveguide) band-pass filter-patch antenna (IMBPF-PA) design with 5.90 GHz resonant frequency and the out-of-band suppression is presented produced and measured for 5G applications using the CST (Computer Simulation Technology) Studio Suite program. In the measurement the antenna gain increase was 0.78% and the in-band frequency range increase was 14.4%.Article Citation - WoS: 1Digital Detox: A New Trend Against technology Addiction(ANKARA UNIV FAC COMMUNICATION, 2020) Dilek Melike Ulucay; Kadriye Kobak; Uluçay, Dılek Melıke; Uzun, Kadriye; Kobak, KadriyeA significant number of studies suggest that an increase in technology addiction and a concomitant decrease in face-to-face communication have left individuals isolated and alienated in their social lives and decreased their performance in their professional and educational lives. To combat the negative effects of communication technologies on the individual there is growing interest in limiting the use of technology through what is known as a 'digital detox' - limiting and reducing the time devoted to the use of digital technology devices. Despite the increasing popularity of :he digital detox especially among young adults there is as yet limited research on the subject. The aim of this study is to examine the digital detox behaviour of young adults and to reveal the reasons that drive them towards this behaviour. Based on qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews this study finds that the most common digital detox behaviour patterns are deleting applications muting all notifications and managing sharing behaviour. It also finds that the primary motivations behind digital detoxes are a desire to focus in one's professional environment and to strengthen interpersonal communication in one's private and social environment.Article European Identity and the Myth of the Peace Project(ANKARA UNIV EUROPEAN UNION RESEARCH CENTRE, 2019) Defne Gunay; Gunay, DefneThe extent to which European identity is accepted by the Europeans in comparison with national identities and what European identity means are topics that are analyzed in the European integration literature. This study uses Eurobarometer data to analyze how much the European identity is endorsed after the Eurozone crisis and how the European institutions aim to define Europeanness. Through critical discourse analysis of the State of the European Union speeches delivered by the President of the European Commission this study demonstrates that Europe as a peace project myth is central in their attempts to render European identity valuable in the eyes of the Europeans.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 10Evaluating Chevron aisle design in unit load warehouses with multiple pickup and deposit points(GAZI UNIV FAC ENGINEERING ARCHITECTURE, 2018) Omer Ozturkoglu; Yeliz Kocaman; Sevkinaz Gumusoglu; Kocaman, Yeliz; Ozturkoglu, Omer; Gümüşoğlu, ŞevkinazWarehousing is becoming more important in the supply chain management than before because of increasing competitiveness in market. Efficient warehouse management has become a critical factor that affects customer satisfaction. Especially managing the lead-time in a warehouse for preparation of a customer order has become one of the critical issues for warehouse managers. Order delivery time in a warehouse is affected by all warehouse activities such as unloading trucks storing and picking products packaging and shipping. The most critical activities are storing and picking because they are the most time consuming activities. Travel time for storing and picking activities depends on aisle layout of the warehouse. Therefore aisle design in a warehouse becomes a research field for researchers. In this study the effect of multiple P&D point on the performance of Chevron design under various warehouse sizes and under different material flow policies is investigated. A mathematical model is constructed in continuous warehouse space and then the expected travel time in a discrete warehouse is calculated. As a result Chevron design outperforms the equivalent traditional design when there are a few number of P&D points and central P&D points have higher material flows than others in warehouse that have 3/1 width/height shape ratio.Article GIFT GIVING CULTURE IN UNIVERSITY AND DESIGNING GIFT OBJECTS THROUGH CORPORATE VALUES(ANADOLU UNIV, 2018) Nazli Gurgan; Mine Ovacik; Gurgan, Nazli; Ovacik, MineCorporate cultural objects are designed to be given as gifts which represent the cultural characteristifs of that particular corporation. While gifts of a university are possibly designed and produced through its collective knowledge of art design and technology this production is a remarkable tool projecting values of the university. In this respect this research is conducted as a design project with the method of practice-based research. In this article not only the process and outcomes of the project is shared but also the following issues are questioned: What is the role of the object in gift giving? If gift giving in our daily life is personal how can corporate gifts reflect its corporational values? How could cultural objects of a university that reflect its institutional culture and values be designed? How could these designed objects become visible? This research is based on the idead that products' design value reinforces corporate belonging and aims to create an exemplary model for the production of university gift objects by turning academic studio works into products contributing to sustainable local production methods through collaboration with contemporary design.Article Global Fault Lines and Turkey's Regional Integration Policies: A Political-Economic Model Suggestion(HALE SIVGIN, 2017) Serhan Oksay; Emre Iseri; Nihat Celik; Çelik, Nihat; Oksay, Serhan; İşeri, EmreThe main objective of this study is to measure prospects for Turkey's regionalization efforts in its immediate geography with various political economic fault lines. For this purpose it has proposed an interacting two-legged-political (establishment of stable peace) and economic (interdependence)-regionalization/integration model. In the framework of our model it comparatively analyzes Turkey's regionalization moves such as the EU the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) countries. Considering levels of political-economic relations with those groupings it concludes that without presence of solid political ground of regional stable peace none of Turkey's regionalization moves do have any prospects to reach advanced stages of integration/regionalization.Article INTERTEXTUALITY AND THE LEADING ROLE OF MUSIC IN VISCONTI'S FILM DEATH IN VENICE(ANADOLU UNIV, 2017) Asli Giray Akyunak; Giray Akyunak, Asli; Akyunak, Aslı GirayItalian film director Luchino Visconti and his anthropomorphic films took into account the passionate and consuming nature of humans and mostly chose defeated heros as their main characters. In his film Death in Venice (1971) adapted from Thomas Mann's short novel of the same name (1912) he tells the story of the death of an artist and its relation to the closure of an era at the fin de siecle. The film constructs a web of intertextual relations and quotations from cultural history literature and music. Visconti's choice of non-diegetic music for the film is Mahler's third and fifth symphonies. This is no coincidence that Mahler and the main character Gustav von Aschenbach have many things in common. Mahler's music represents the life spiritual state and inner voice of Aschenbach hence playing a leading role in the film. The dichotomies and ambiguities in the film can also be traced in Mahler's music adding to the power and effect of the narration. This study examines intertextuality in Visconti's masterpiece and aims to provide a different perspective on the use of music in film.Article Land Grab Processes in Romania and Bulgaria: A Historical Continuity Perspective(ULUSLARARASI ILISKILER KONSEYI DERNEGI, 2018) Nazif Mandaci; Mandacı, NazifAlthough they are positioned in the periphery of the Western economic core Romania and Bulgaria are different from the Third World countries that were exploited and colonized by the Western powers in the preceding centuries where currently land grab processes are at work. However it is observed that because of their geographical and political standings those countries are also influenced by the ongoing global land grab processes albeit in different ways. The externalities of processes of enclosure primitive accumulation or accumulation by dispossession as defined in general by the critical literature have continued to inflict particularly small landholders as did in other societies in different parts of the world. However upon their accession to the European Union land grab processes in those countries entered into a new historical phase discerned by incoming new actors such as equity fundsand the unique dynamics such as the transformation of land into a speculative asset and an energy source.Article Law Applicable in International Commercial Arbitration(ISTANBUL UNIV, 2020) Isil Ozkan; Özkan, IşılIn this article titled Law Applicable in International Commercial Arbitration different legal rules to be applied to the various elements of arbitration are discussed. The legal capacity to make an arbitration agreement the eligibility to arbitration in terms of subject matter and law to be applied to the form of the arbitration agreement are amongst those subjects that will be examined. The capacity is subject to the national law of parties and the eligibility to arbitration in terms of subject matter is subject to the law of country in which the award will be recognised and executed. Then the law to be applied to the base will be determined according to whether the parties made a choice of law. If the parties have not chosen a law the arbitrators can determine the applicable law according to various rules. These rules would be a conflict of law rules of lex arbitri or the proper law of contract. Lex mercatoria is the most applied one among these rules. The will of the parties to resolve according to the general principles of law or according to the usage and practice is sufficient for the arbitrators to apply lex mercatoria. Unlike the law to be applied to the base the law to be applied to the procedure is generally subject to the place of arbitration law. It would be determined by the arbitrators if the parties did not choose a law. The will of the parties may also play a role. In the case that the parties didn't choose the rule of law for the procedure the arbitrator or arbitrators can apply any proper law of contract including institutional rules of procedure like ICC.Article Makespan and energy based virtual machine scheduling in cloud systems, Bulut sistemlerinde toplam tamamlanma ve enerji tabanli sanal makine çizelgelemesi(Gazi Universitesi, 2024) Alper Kizil; Korhan Karabulut; Kizil, Alper; Karabulut, KorhanCloud computing is one of the newest computing paradigms that emerged after worldwide development of Internet infrastructure. It is a technology that saves both large companies and small and medium scale companies as well as independent developers from the cost of keeping infrastructure hardware up to date and operational while also providing flexibility on resource use as well providing additional opportunity to minimize data losses. While in the future it is evident that demand for cloud computing will be on the rise. These kinds of datacenters due to their nature consume large amounts of energy and even the savings on smallest scales will enable these gigantic centers to save a significant amount of energy in total. If we have a look at the literature we can see green computing is gaining immense popularity over the years. The Cloud Scheduling problem is a proven problem to be NP-Hard aiming to find the best solution for a limited number of cloud resources which could theoretically be serving an unlimited number of user demands. In this study firstly an experimental workload / power consumption model is proposed for a server computer and then two genetic algorithms optimizing makespan and energy consumption are compared on these metrics at different server loads. As a result it has been seen that these two criteria are closely related to each other and it has been determined that optimizing the energy criterion has a more positive effect between 10% and 13% compared to the time criterion optimization at full or near full server loads. In this way it has been shown that significant energy savings can be achieved by using energy optimization as an objective function at high server loads. © 2024 Elsevier B.V. This paper examines the perceptions of Turkish academics of gossip and rumours gossip topics and their relationship with certain organizational cultural issues. A web-based questionnaire was sent to 356 academics working in the communications field. The findings revealed that gossip and rumours are quite common in academic organizations. Internal gossip and rumours are perceived to be more common than the external gossip and rumours. Gossips and rumours about the management and the personnel rights are among the top topics. On the other hand academics generally have negative opinions about gossip and rumours. However such negative opinions about gossip and rumours were found to decrease when the perceived organizational democracy and internal communication levels increase. It is clear that academic administrators may not cope with gossip and rumours successfully unless they improve democratic participation and internal communication.Article Citation - WoS: 2Personal Privacy Issue from Social Big Data Perspective: Educated and Urban Social Network Users' Privacy Approaches in Turkey(ISTANBUL UNIV FAC COMMUNICATION, 2020) Ebru Gokaliler; Ezgi Saatcioglu; Gökaliler, Ebru; Saatcıoğlu, EzgiThe role and influence of social media on daily life is increasing day by day. It also brings about the change of the privacy concept in terms of meaning and role. The personal information that is being shared via social media content is analyzed in a big data pool and is used by various sectors. In this context it is also discussed whether individuals have information about the privacy policies they approve while using social networks. In this study it is aimed to evaluate individuals' perspectives on privacy in social media big data and privacy issues from the perspective of communication privacy management theory. For this aim a qualitative research design and an in-dept interview technique was used in the study. In-dept interviews were conducted between November 2019 and December 2019 with 18 social media users who were selected by purposive sampling which is one of the non-probable sampling methods. The data was evaluated by the Miles & Huberman (1994) model. As a result it was understood that the participants mostly paid attention to the privacy of their private lives on social media and benefited from the privacy settings offered to them. On the other hand it was understood that the participants didn't read the privacy policies published by social media platforms and they approved those policies as they wanted to be members of those platforms. Even if they are worried about sharing their personal information it seems that they continue to sharein this context it can be interpreted as the participants' desire to be on a platfrom and to express themselves through sharing is suppressing their privacy concerns.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Proposals for Monitoring Current Conservation Condition of Historical Masonry Buildings: Matrone Church and Cardak Han Cases(ISTANBUL UNIV RESEARCH INST TURKOLOGY DEPT ART HISTORY, 2020) Feyza Durmuslar; Emre Ipekci; Mine Hamamcioglu Turan; Engin Aktas; Durmuslar, Feyza; Aktaş, Engin; Turan, Mine; İpekci, EmreThe aim of this study is to transfer the international developments related to the process of diagnosis and monitoring of historical masonry structures to the national area. The method chosen is to test the recommendations made at the international level on national cases and to discuss the results obtained by comparing them. A review of preliminary studies on-site observations measured surveys material characterizations mapping and visual analysis have been carried out. An examination of structural characteristics and observed failures have also been detailed. Related risks have been evaluated with criteria developed by taking into consideration condition classes defined in the UNI EN 16096 titled Conservation of Cultural Property- Condition Survey and Report of Built Cultural Heritage. According to the defined risks and classes priorities of interventions were determined. Two historical masonry buildings which possess characteristics of different periods and present different damage types were selected: Matrone Church in Ildiri Cesme Izmir and Cardak Han in Cardak Denizli. The condition reports of the selected buildings have been prepared. The critical points in the condition reporting of historical masonry buildings were determined: accurate comprehension of the authentic structural characteristics and related failures have priority in maintaining historical masonry structures. Identification of condition class and risk assessment of each historic masonry building should be made in accordance with a standard specific to the cases of our country but in line with the European standards and current developments in the field of architectural restoration. Thus it will be possible to evaluate the conservation state of our masonry assets in comparison with each other. The content and priority of interventions can be well planned with the participation of the necessary disciplines.
