Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE EXERGOECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF TEXTILE DRYERS USING SPECO METHOD(EGE UNIV, 2012) Ahmet Cay; Isik Tarakcioglu; Arif Hepbasli; Hepbaşlı, Arif; Çay, Ahmet; Tarakçıoğlu, IşıkThis study reveals the exergoeconomic analysis of stenters by using Specific Exergy Costing (SPECO) method. The cost balances and auxiliary thermoeconomic relations were developed for direct gas heated (DGHS) and hot oil heated (HOHS) stenters by the application of the control volume models. The exergy cost of the evaporation of water was selected to be the main parameter. It was shown that the falling-rate period of drying led to the highest exergy costs while exergy costs varied between 0.19 US$/GJ and 0.59 US$/GJ depending on the drying periods. Increasing the exhaust air humidity ratio and the residual moisture content of the fabric outlet decreased the exergy costs linearly.Article A Comprehensive Overview of Foreign Language Teachers' Professional Development: Self-directed and Institutional Professional Development Activities of English Teachers in Turkey(Turkish Education Association, 2024-07-30) Çaǧri Özköse-Biyik; Oner Uslu; Bıyık, Çağrı Özköse; Uslu, ÖnerWhen the literature on the professional development of English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers is examined professional development predominantly encompasses institutional activities. This study critically examines conventional definitions and practices related to the professional development of EFL teachers arguing that in line with the demands of the era teachers' professional development should also include self-directed individual activities. However for professional development activities to contribute to the ultimate goal of student learning it is important for the organizational culture in which teachers are situated to be supportive of their professional development. To seek answers to research questions about how the institutional and self-directed activities carried out by EFL teachers in Türkiye and the organizational culture influence these activities an exploratory sequential strategy was employed in the research. First qualitative data were collected and then quantitative data were collected through a survey tool developed based on the qualitative data. Comprehensive individual interviews were conducted with a total of 28 teachers across Turkey and survey data were collected from 819 teachers. The findings are presented as self-directed (unstructured) professional development activities (e.g. use of search engines reading news websites watching videos/series etc.) and institutional (structured) professional development activities (participation in national and international conferences etc.). The necessity of foreign language teachers being involved in many individual activities through self-direction beyond their participation in activities planned by institutions for the professional development of a foreign language teacher is discussed. The study proposes a comprehensive perspective on the concept of professional development related to EFL teachers and offers recommendations for the field of foreign language teacher education. © 2024 Elsevier B.V. Current thermal energy conversion-based systems will stay as main electricity generation in the grid and they will support base loads of the system. Whether these systems are fossil or geothermal sourced they need adaptive technologies to harmonize with the changing network. This study aims to investigate feasibility and performance to satisfy response demands for a proposed thermal energy storage system connected to feed stream of thermal power generation to support ancillary services in a case study in Turkey. Tin is selected as the phase change material for its good inductive properties. It is demonstrated numerically that the evaluated heat storage tank filled with tin provides adequate time for thermal discharging within time limits to benefit from hourly ancillary power market. Using hourly pricing data for entire 2020 it is found that proposed system shows better economic performance than investment requirement of ROI over 11% as stated in various literature for renewable energy systems. Analysis of system economic performance shows a ROI of 16% and NPV is 17.8% higher than required investment. © 2025 Elsevier B.V. ErdikIn recent years Türkiye has steadily invested in renewable energy including wind turbines Conseqently their share in the total generation of energy in the country has been increasing every year. Considering the cost of wind power plants together with the targeted amount of energy generation earthquake planning for these systems becomes crucial. Earthquakes are one of the principal risks of wind energy investments especially when considering the earthquake hazard level in a large portion of the country. Under the present circumstances the companies producing wind turbines conduct the analysis and planning they deem necessary and forward these to the investors in our country. The extent to which manufacturers consider earthquake parameters and analysis methods in the design of wind turbines for earthquake resistance is not well-defined. The lack of clarity makes it difficult for investors to accurately evaluate the suitability of wind turbine tower and foundation designs for the specific conditions of the country. This study evaluates earthquake design methods by investigating the regulations used in the design of wind turbines around the world. The magnitude of ground motion considered in the earthquake design the method of analysis used the load combinations on which the designs are based and the criteria for the designs have been inspected. Moreover the design documents for a wind turbine that is being constructed have been examined in detail with the earthquake design stage being especially scrutinized. Assessments and recommendations have been made regarding the design specifications analysis methods and criteria used in the analysis and design of the wind turbines currently being built in our country. Subsequently obtained recommendations have been taken into consideration to propose an earthquake design procedure for the earthquake design of wind turbines. © 2025 Elsevier B.V. Cognitions are seen as vulnerability factors in the development and maintenance of BPD. The present study aims to contribute to the cognitive literature on BPD by examining depressive and hypomanic attitudes and their contribution to the prediction of BPD diagnosis as well as by exploring the relationship between dysfunctional cognitions and clinical features (types of episodes experienced duration of illness and duration of remission). Methods: One hundred and eighteen remitted bipolar patients and 103 healthy controls completed the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ) Turkish Brief-Hypomanic Interpretations and Positive Predictions Inventory (HAPPI) and Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale. Results: The bipolar group had significantly higher depressive and hypomanic attitudes than the control group. No significant differences were found regarding the types of episodes experienced and duration of illness. However both types of attitudes decreased as the duration of remission increased. They were also found to contribute to the prediction of bipolar diagnosis together with the screening of the MDQ. Conclusion: The results pointed out that dysfunctional cognitions may be utilized as possible indicators for the risk of relapse in clinical groups and vulnerability for BPD among other populations. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Ekstraktının Sazan (Cyprinus carpio L. 1758) Sosislerinin Bazı Kimyasal Mikrobiyal ve Duyusal Özellikleri Üzerine Etkileri(Centenary University, 2019-12-31) Mehmet Zülfü ÇOBAN; Eylem Ezgi FADILOĞLU; Fadiloğlu, Eylem Ezgi; Çoban, Mehmet ZülfüBu çalışmada kurt üzümü ekstraktının 2±1°C’da 28 gün depolanan sazan (Cyprinus carpio L. 1758) sosislerinin bazı kalite özellikleri üzerine etkileri araştırılmıştır. Article Citation - WoS: 15Citation - Scopus: 23One-dimensional cutting stock problem with divisible items: A case study in steel industry(Isik University, 2019) Deniz Tanir; Onur Uǧurlu; Asli Guler; Urfat Nuriyev; Ugurlu, O.; Tanır, D.; Nurıyev, U.; Guler, A.This paper considers the one-dimensional cutting stock problem (1D-CSP) with divisible items which arises in the steel industries. While planning the steel cutting operations each item can be divided into smaller pieces then they can be recombined by welding. The objective is to minimize both the trim loss and the number of the welds. The problem can be seen as a natural generalization of the cutting stock problem (CSP) with skiving option [1] where recombining operation has a cost. In this paper a mathematical model for the problem is given and a dynamic programming based heuristic algorithm is proposed in accordance with the company needs. Furthermore a software which is based on the proposed heuristic algorithm is developed to use in MKA Company and its performance is analyzed by solving real-life problems in the steel industry. The computational experiments show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. To explore this natural fine aggregate in SCM mixes was partially replaced with CR at levels ranging from 5% to 25% by total fine aggregate volume. Two mix series one with a total binder of 500 kg/m3 and the other with a 540 kg/m3 binder were designed at water-to-binder ratios of 0.40 and 0.33. Ordinary Portland cement (80% by weight) and fly ash (20% by weight) were used to manufacture mortars. Twelve SCM mixes were cast and tested to evaluate their fresh-state properties including setting times flow diameter and flow time. Moreover the compressive strengths at 3 7 28 56 and 90 days were determined for each mix to investigate their strength development. The test results indicated that the incorporation of CR adversely affected the fresh properties of the SCM mixes and an increase in the CR replacement level systematically diminished their strength characteristics. Nevertheless it was observed that it could be used in a controlled manner to achieve the desired properties.Article The Impact of Media and Cultural Beliefs on Women’s Participation in Sports in Turkey: The Challenges faced by Turkish Women in Professional Sports, Medya ve Kültürel İnançların Türkiye’de Kadınların Spora Katılımı Üzerindeki Etkisi: Profesyonel Sporda Türk Kadınlarının Karşılaştığı Zorluklar(Sosyoekonomi Society, 2021-04-28) Meltem İnce-YenilmezThe fight for gender equality in Turkey extends as far as the sports sector of the economy. Although Turkey has recently seen a fast rise in the participation of women in sports female athletes are still being marginalized for many reasons. The alarming levels of discrimination discourage females from entering into professional sports in Turkey and have inhibited the growth of the female sports sector in Turkey. This research aims to examine the different roles women have to take with emphasis on explaining the relationship between sports and politics in modern Turkey. The present study explores Turkish women's specific constraints and challenges in professional Sports. Qualitative data were generated from semi-structured interviews conducted with 142 female athletes (both amateur and professionals) across different cities in Turkey. The findings of the study indicate that family influence (χ= 4.39 of 5) wage inequality (χ = 4.31 of 5) media misrepresentation (χ = 4.16 of 5) inadequate sports facilities for women (χ = 4.12 of 5) and high levels of sexual harassment (χ = 3.89 of 5) are the constraints that must be addressed to improve the climate for female participation in sports significantly. The study highlights how these physical activities and sports programs play essential roles in increasing awareness of their importance and improving the overall perception of women in sports in Turkey. © 2024 Elsevier B.V. Antigone is accepted as a threshold text which emerges during the time the society organized at the collective level transforms into a system of State. This study claims that the tensions caused by these different types of transformations are symbolized through the concepts of ritual and ceremony. Bearing this claim and argument in mind the aim of this study is to read the rituals which are the cultural heritage of humanity together with the deeds of the female character Antigone who gave her name to the play and to explain these deeds and their consequences with the processes of rituals. The theoretical explanations on the concept of ritual form the core of the critical discourse analysis used to examine Antigone text. The claim of this study is that Antigone a female rebellious character remains at the liminal state and as a result of this she gains the skills to design destructive acts by being liberated from all social contracts and identities. This destructive state provides a new possibility of reading on social tensions observed during the time of transformation.
