Çağdaş ütopyaların yaratılmasında görsel medyanın gücü
(2015) Kahyaoğlu, Betül; Güngör, Ahmet Şefik
As a result of modernity, mass communication plays a significant role in all societies. In the age of visual domination, people are exposed to numerous visuals in their daily lives. Visual media, which play an active role in the transfer of visuals, affect the ones who observe them in the direction and design intention of the dominant ideology. As a consequence of mass and consumption culture, societies accumulate around the concepts determined by the dominant ideology, and these concepts convert to contemporary utopias in societies through the support of the visuals used in visual media, which has an effective part in this conversion. This study aims to indicate that the number of the images and the visuals presented via mass communication and especially visual media in the societies experiencing the mass culture, culture industry and consumption culture which have started and continued to be effective with globalization throughout the world has increased a lot; how visual media play a role in creation of the contemporary utopias in this era. It has been analyzed how effective a role visual media have had in the creation of contemporary utopias within the scope of the critical cultural and media theories of the Frankfurt school philosophers who express cultural changes started with the modernity, alongside the ideology theory of Atlhusser and the hegemony theory of Gramsci. In this study, how visual media play a role in creation of the contemporary utopias has been discussed in limitation of science fiction movies. In this regard, movies named The Island and Surrogates were analyzed with visual and text analysis. In the analysis, it has been deduced that society has been convinced how important both science and technology are for a better life via visual culture, how hyper-reality presented by visual media creates the promise of happiness in the society, and how effectively visual media take place in the creation of a perfect social structure with the standardization of the society.
