The novelty of the study is to evaluate the sectoral effects of COVID-19 on global supply chains in the example of Turkey and China considering detailed parameters thanks to the developed System Dynamics (SD) model. During COVID-19 spread most of the countries decided long period of lockdowns which impacted the production and supply chains. This had also caused decrease in capacity utilizations and industrial productions in many countries which resulted with imbalance of maritime trade between countries that increased the freight costs. In this study cause and effect relations of trade parameters supply chain parameters demographic data and logistics data on disruptions of global supply chains have been depicted for specifically Turkey and China since China is the biggest importer of Turkey. Due to this disruption mainly exports from Turkey to China has been impacted in food chemical and mining sectors. This study is helpful to plan in which sectors, the actions should be taken by the government bodies or managers. Based on findings of this study new policies such as onshore activities should consider to overcome the logistics and supply chain disruptions in global supply chains. Different supply chain structures and planning horizons have been analyzed to support practitioners taking action on the short mid and long terms. Confronted complexity in the supply chain has been categorized as system perceived and value adding. This would also help practitioners to understand the sources of the complexity and if the complexity is useful for the system or not. Design/methodology/approach Three different retail supply chain scenarios - each concentrating on different planning horizons - have been simulated on system dynamics software STELLA. Using the new classification scheme for complexity and suggested performance metrics a multi-perspective analysis has been performed on the STELLA output. Findings The results and the methodology can be easily applicable in practice to support decision-making process and to answer what-if type scenario analysis on systems design and configuration. Using the selected complexity metrics complexity of the system considering time factor - static and dynamic - and different information levels - system perceived and value adding - has been evaluated. Today the retail sector both bricks-and-mortar and online is developing and adapting to the changing needs of the customers. Depending on the changing demand patterns of the customers one can notice that key success criteria of the sector transform as well. Rapid adaptation to changing requirements of the retail sector is necessary in order to survive in the increased competition and to increase the market share among the other companies. In order to analyze the sector in Turkey retail brands that are selected from the largest 500 companies of Turkey (Capital 500 list) were examined using the relevant success criteria. Key success factors have been chosen from the existing literature about the retail sector. Firstly retailing was examined in a theoretical framework to better undersand the elements that define the sector alongside technological capabilities of the sector. Additionally the effects of Covid-19 on e-retailing were also evaluated with the purpose of determining the changes forced upon the sector by the pandemic. In the light of the findings the emerging companies observed changes and directional shifts and the size of the competition in Turkish retailing sector are discussed. In addition the forward and reverse flow of materials information human resources and finance occurs among different stakeholders in closing the loop of supply chains. Reverse logistics (RL) activities are gaining importance in terms of size and quantity due to both economic and environmental concerns. These flows in RL in supply chains are both dynamic and complex in nature. Further the environmental impact of RL activities has barely been considered in holistic way in available literature. In this study a system dynamics model has been developed to analyze and comprehend the green performance of RL activities by predicting the environmental impact of RL activities. The proposed model has been validated by a case study in the context of a food supply chain. In the company where the case study is carried out the environmental effects of RL activities have been analyzed. These activities in a food supply chain in terms of CO2 (carbon dioxide) NOx (nitrogen oxide) SO2 (sulfur dioxide) and PM (particulate matter) emissions have been predicted through a system dynamics model for the years 2020 to 2024. The proposed methodology is applied in a food supply context a major player in retail business especially in emerging economies. It uses a significant amount of energy while creating substantial amount of potentially health-threatening carbon monoxide (CO) sulfur dioxide (SO2) nitrogen oxides (NOx) and dust partides. Hence the cement industry can be regarded as a primary area for study in the development of green manufacturing. In this study an urban cement factory is analyzed. The major contribution of the article is the development of a holistic approach to identify the variables impacting cement production and environmental factors creating air pollution in the area a system dynamics model has been developed incorporating streaming data. To understand the effect of a cement factory on an urban area some strategic level decisions are also analyzed with the study in order to reveal their impact on environment. The impact of cement production on air pollution cannot be evaluated separately from other air quality factors, therefore the contribution of each factor has to be identified in order to understand the specific issues affecting a region. With the use of the model future implications of various air quality factors on environmental sustainability can be assessed. According to the results PM10 value which is currently above the World Health Organization (WHO) air pollution critical level of 50 mu g/m(3) for 30% of the days in a year will dimb to more than 50% in 2023. Moreover governments can also recognize the severe impacts of location selection for cement industries unplanned and excessive building licensing and uncontrolled immigration on environment of an urban living. The objectives of this research are firstly to map the milk supply chains to explore information flow among different members for higher traceability, secondly to investigate the societal impacts of blockchain technology in a milk supply chain to build social sustainability. The systems theory in integration with system dynamics (SD) provides the necessary theoretical underpinning to this research. We collect data from an agricultural development cooperative founded to support dairy farmers in Turkey. This work evaluates the societal impacts of blockchain technology on farmers the community and animals using parameters such as local embedding rural development decreasing food fraud animal health and welfare proximity to food markets food security educating and promoting people towards healthy eating assisting food access and social acceptability for transparency. In the last 18 years the cooperative has encouraged dairy farmers in the district to become partners with a resultant increase in milk production from 30 thousand tons in 2002 to 330 thousand tons in 2019. According to our findings population growth of the country and adult population increases in the district it is expected that by 2025 the number of partners will rise to approximately 2800. The increase in number of partners proves the network expansion. Furthermore blockchain technology can be incorporated into the existing system so that transparent and end-to-end accurate tracking of the supply chain is made possible while creating decentralized recording of transactions. Moreover the critical traceability points of a milk supply chain are evaluated with the blockchain adoption. This will help achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of providing safe food promoting good health and better well-being for everyone.
