(2014) Akhundlu, Günel; Türker, Sedat Umur; Öztekin, Mehmet Korkut
In the era of knowledge we are in, the need for processing the amount of knowledge available rapidly and effectively is increasing day after day. In this context the illustration, an important branch of graphic designing, undertakes a descriptive, interpretive and authenticative role about the message that is wanted to be conveyed to community in a way based on drawing. Today's artists who are in continuous investigation and study to make radical changes in their arts, look for new ways of expression through forcing the new material and technical possibilities provided by technology. As well as the classical drawing tools being used, widespread use of computer is seen in the field of illustration due to the possibilities provided by great advances experienced in computer technology. The photograph being used as an element of news in printed media is different from literary news in terms of nature. News photograph and literary news do not seem similar in terms of production processes. These are distinct media. In order to evaluate the topic of news photography correctly and efficiently in disputes concerning the ethics of media and reporting, primarily subject differences should be taken into account. This situation is among the primary important factors that should be considered within the ethical discussions about news photography. Since the topic of ethics concentrates on the choices – in the context of attitudes and behaviors - made by individuals while they are acting, the primary subject of the 'ethics of news photography' is the conditions of the 'news photograph production stage' which determine news photographers' occupational attitudes, behaviors and choices. The fundamental results of study were newspaper and magazine design, investigations performed related to that, today's newspaper and magazine illustration types, the function of illustrations in newspapers and magazines, the relationship of illustration with the text, the illustration system of newspaper and magazine issues, the characteristic features of illustration in various press samples and development and evaluation of newspaper and magazine graphics by editor. Key Words: Page design, illustration of newspaper and magazine, photo-illustration, illustrations lacking photograph, digital illustration, illustration techniques

(2014) Akhundova, Samra; Türker, Sedat Umur; Öztekin, Mehmet Korkut
This thesis is the first attempt to lay down the history of Russian illustration within its stages of development. The study period is from the Renaissance of Russian periodical illustrations in 18th Century, until the 20th Century (namely 1980s.) This period is divided into three stages: first, the Depiction – Tone Stage (18th century); second, the Colored Illustrations Stage (19th century); and finally, the third, Photomechanical Stage (from the 20th century onwards until the end of 1970s). Within this scope, this Master's Degree Thesis explores the types of Russian periodical illustrations, investigates the characteristics of illustrations according to each specific period, analyses the art of the specific illustrators who contributed to the style of these periodicals, and presents detailed information on the creative aspects of the artists who gradually built the Russian school of illustration art in the specified stages of development, along with their illustrations. This study employs the methodologies of art and sociology of art history. Therefore, in this study, the development of periodical illustrations as the fundamental part of graphic-design activity in Russia is analyzed within context of the socio-cultural requirements of the Russian society and interacting historic-art medium.
