TASARIM EĞİTİMİNDE STRATEJİK VE YAPILANDIRMACI BİR PEDAGOJİK YAKLAŞIM OLARAK “KATILIM”
(2025) Ozgen Osman Demirbas; Sevi Merter; Demirbas, Ozgen Osman; Merter, Sevi

Synesthetic Approach in the Design Process for Enhanced Creativity and Multisensory Experiences
(Taylor and Francis Ltd. michael.wagreich@univie.ac.at, 2017) Sevi Merter; Merter, Sevi
Synesthesia –involuntary cross-modal sensory associations– is in very close relationship with perception creativity and imagination. Since design appeals to senses and provides multisensory experiences to users synesthesia can be developed as a multisensory design method and framework –a multisensory instrument– having the potential to change the perception of the practice and the embodiment of a design idea accordingly. It can prompt creativity and imagination as well as enhancing the user experience and interaction with the product. Within this perspective this paper aims to suggest a new territory for design research by investigating the relationship among synesthesia creativity and perception in order to contextualize the association between synesthesia and design and presenting a few exemplary designs that are found inspirational within the context. Then synesthetic approach as a design method and framework is proposed with the intention to utilize and provide unique and intersubjective experiences in the field of product design. © 2020 Elsevier B.V. CHILDREN WITH AUTISM PROVIDING A KNOWLEDGE BASE FOR EDUCATIONAL AND THERAPEUTIC PRODUCT DESIGN
(IATED-INT ASSOC TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT, 2016) Sevi Merter; Deniz Hasirci; Merter, Sevi; Hasirci, Deniz; LG Chova; AL Martinez; IC Torres
Besides everyday objects and environments children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) engage with a wide range of educational and therapeutic tools equipment and environments that aim to improve their social interaction communication and motor skills sensory systems and enhance cognitive abilities self-maintenance and independence. Such products and environments play a significant role in ASD-specific schools and special education centers. In Turkey public schools apply the curriculum that is approved by the Ministry of National Education whereas private special education centers apply more specific ASD intervention and educational methods accepted worldwide. These schools and special education centers are equipped with products that vary depending on whether the school or center is a public or a private one since they apply different curricula. However these products used in integration with various methods do not always fully suit the needs of these children. In that sense participatory product design has much to offer to children with ASD in terms of increasing their overall wellbeing and quality of life. Participatory design as a design method giving participants the right to have a say both in the design process and the final product enables the involvement of these children and others also affected by the disorder such as parents and special educators in shaping their surroundings. In this study examining a public and a private special education center in Izmir Turkey the physical environments provided to children with ASD as well as the possibilities of participation of the children and their caregivers in these centers in the design of educational and therapeutic products are discussed with examples in terms of children's attachment to the products in these environments and their contribution to children's quality of life in return through observations and interviews. The findings showed that the participatory design processes conducted with children with ASD their parents and caregivers were helpful in collecting significant information that is not readily available elsewhere and that can be a base for new educational and therapeutic product design for children with ASD.

A participatory product design process with children with autism spectrum disorder
(TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2018) Sevi Merter; Deniz Hasirci; Merter, Sevi; Hasırcı, Deniz
This study aims to explore the ways of involving children with autism in participatory product design processes. Due to the impaired skills of children with autism a key aspect of the process is to gain an understanding of the nature of the disorder and how these children interact with their social and material surroundings as well as their daily life problems. Considering this a case study was conducted with children with autism their parents and teachers and also industrial design students in a public special education centre in zmir Turkey. The design task was to reconsider the conventional trampoline design with respect to the needs of the sample group and the special education centre as well as the benefits it provides. The task was based on the patterns of behaviours actions and movement. Observations interviews and questionnaires were carried out as well as collaborative meetings and discussion meetings. Through the case study the findings provided insights into conducting a participatory process with children with autism the roles of the participants and the interaction and communication among them. Furthermore participants' attitude towards participatory design the potential benefits of the design process and innovations to benefit children with autism were explained.

Co-Learning Scenarios with the Community: Democratic Practices In and Out of the Design Studio, Escenaris de coaprenentatge amb la comunitat: Pràctiques democràtiques dins i fora de l’estudi de disseny
(Elisava Barcelona School of Design and Engineering, 2024) Sevi Merter; Merter, Sevi
Design education is characterised by its experiential and practice-oriented approach emphasising active engagement with projects. The pedagogical focus is on developing individual styles professional stances and a receptive attitude towards novel experiences aligning with the evolving landscape of the design profession. This study explores community engagement in student projects as a means to establish a co-deciding and co-learning infrastructure in the design studio. This participative and democratic approach challenges traditional hierarchies in higher education transforms the student-instructor relationship and aligns educational practices with the evolving requirements of the design profession. The study investigates students’ insights into co-learning with the community through scenario-building. A workshop conducted with twelve fourth-year undergraduate industrial design students and the thematic analysis of the findings revealed that educational community engagement projects employing inclusionary methods motivate students and foster a positive attitude towards shifting power relations within a democratic design studio structure. The findings also highlight the need for a clear focus a set of principles for successful engagement and conflict resolution in the co-learning process as well as the generative potential of scenario-building as a method for inclusive practices. © 2024 Elsevier B.V. ÇOKLU DUYUSAL ÜRÜN TASARIMINDA FİKİR GELİŞTİRME İÇİN SİNESTETİK DÜŞÜNME
    (2024) Sevi Merter; Merter, Sevi
