The Role of Fear Sadness and Anger in Shaping Support for Climate Policies: Evidence from a UK Survey Experiment
(Mary Ann Liebert Inc., 2024) Defne Günay; Gizem Melek; Gizem Arikan; Clara Faulí Molas; Günay, Defne; Melek, Gizem; Molas, Clara Faulí; Arıkan, Gizem
Emotions play a significant role in motivating climate action but the nature and the direction of the relationship between emotions and attitudes toward climate policy are relatively understudied. We conducted a survey experiment (United Kingdom n 5 1330) in which we experimentally manipulated incidental emotions to consider the effects of fear anger and sadness on support for different climate policies. In terms of informative policies the results show that inducing sadness significantly increases support for early warning systems for disaster predictions but has no notable effect on providing health risk information concerning climate change. Regarding protective policies inducing fear positively and significantly influences support for banning petrol cars while an immediate ban on coal plants shows no statistically significant effect. Interestingly contrary to the expectations and findings in the literature we found the negative effect of anger treatment on the support for punitive measures oriented toward high-electricity-consuming households and no effect on punitive measures against businesses and frequent flyers. Our findings highlight the potent influence of emotions in motivating support for specific climate policies revealing their intricate nature. At times certain emotions such as anger can even cause reduced support for climate policies. © 2024 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An Examination of the Transformative Effect of Learning by Teaching Method in Human Rights Education
(ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2025) Defne Guenay; Zahide Melis Ozun Colluoglu; Guenay, Defne; Özün Çöllüoğlu, Zahide Melis; Günay, Defne
Human rights education constitutes a significant component within the global human rights regime. In the realm of human rights education transformative approaches have gained prominence emphasizing the necessity of educational practices beyond traditional classroom settings. This study aims to examine the impact of participatory methodologies employed in human rights education on enhancing individuals' learning and awareness regarding human rights issues. Specifically we employ the pedagogical technique of learning by teaching grounded in the principle that teaching is an effective means of learning. Through our research we ascertain that the implementation of the learning by teaching approach effectively heightens the awareness and knowledge of all participants concerning human rights matters. Moreover our study reveals that individuals who engaged in instructing their peers exhibited a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of subjects such as women's rights slavery and refugees' human rights when compared to those who solely attended lectures. The majority of these peer tutors also experienced transformative learning although transformative learning remained limited among the peer learner group. Consequently our findings not only contribute to the existing body of literature on pedagogy in the field of International Relations but also stimulate further discussions pertaining to human rights education.

Unexpected Persistence Amidst Enlargement Stasis: Usages of Europe in Turkey's Nuclear Energy Debate
(ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2017) Defne Gunay; Emre Iseri; Gunay, Defne; Iseri, Emre
Recent studies on European Union (EU) Enlargement have emphasised the importance of usages of 'Europe' by domestic actors as a necessary condition for the EU to have an impact on domestic politics. We study the usages of Europe in the critical case of Turkey's nuclear energy policy. We analyse the narratives and actions of domestic actors in Turkey to identify if they use 'Europe' (the EU and the idea of Europe). We reach the counter-intuitive finding of usages by both state and non-state actors which illustrates that usages of Europe can persist despite enlargement stasis in candidate states.

How can a 'Responsible' European Union Contribute to the Implementation of the Responsibility to Protect?
(CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS, 2019) Pinar Gozen Ercan; Defne Gunay; Ercan, Pinar Gozen; Gunay, Defne
In 2013 in light of the mass atrocity cases in Libya and Syria the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament recommended 'to reconfirm the EU's commitment to R2P [Responsibility to Protect] by adopting an interinstitutional Consensus on R2P'. Despite such reaffirmation the Union's role in implementing R2P remains an open-ended question. To date the EU's contribution to R2P has rarely been studied. In our attempt to contribute to the literature approaching the issue from an ethical perspective we aim to answer the following questions: what are the existing capacities of the EU in contributing to R2P, and what can the EU do to be a more responsible actor in the future? After identifying the existing capacities of the Union we analyse what the EU can do to make the international community more responsible in the future given that we have already left behind the first decade of the norm which was characterized by inconsistent implementation. Finally we conclude that the Union holds a genuine potential for further development and a consistent implementation of the norm mainly by utilizing its non-military tools.

Emotions in climate change communication: An experimental investigation
(DE GRUYTER MOUTON, 2022) Gizem Arikan; Gizem Melek; Defne Gunay; Arikan, Gizem; Melek, Gizem; Gunay, Defne
We conducted an experiment to test whether altering the saliency of information provided by experts in fictitious news stories on climate change triggered different emotions among readers. Based on appraisal theories of emotions in the psychology literature we hypothesized that 1) news stories that presented climate change related threats as diffuse and uncertain would elicit greater levels of anxiety while 2) stories that provided a specific target to blame would induce greater anger and 3) those that underlined the potential of technology and human efforts to solve climate change related issues would elicit greater levels of hope. We found that while all news stories concerning climate change elicited high levels of anxiety there were statistically significant differences between the emotions expressed by participations in the expected directions. We discuss the potential implications of these findings for climate change communication and for public opinion on climate change.

Contending narratives on the sustainability of nuclear energy in Turkey
(SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD, 2018) Emre Iseri; Defne Gunay; Alper Almaz; Almaz, Alper; İşeri, Emre; Günay, Defne
Sustainable development recently topped the universal agenda again when the United Nations adopted its Sustainable Development Goals on 25 September 2015. Yet since the 1990s the concept has prompted different actors to reformulate their relations with the environment in line with different narratives on the concept. This inherent contradiction becomes all the more salient during sustainable development debates on nuclear which has often been dominated by the expert-oriented politics prioritizing carbon-free economic growth by post-politicizing the issue at stake. In this light the main objective of this paper is to contribute to nuclear related literature stressing on broader conceptions of sustainability by going beyond those techno-economic discussions. Hinging on the multi-faceted nature of Turkey's nuclear energy debate this paper argues that multitude of state and non-state discourse coalitions (i.e. nuclear advocacy nuclear opposition and ambivalent) has constructed sustainability of nuclear differently through their narratives. To substantiate its argument through a narrative analysis this paper examines competing narratives over nuclear energy's economic environmental and societal impacts in Turkey. The findings have challenged pro-nuclear techno-economic discourse coalition's attempt to post-politicize Turkish nuclear debate by revealing complex and multi-faceted nature of the debate.

Public attitudes towards climate change: A cross-country analysis
(SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC, 2021) Gizem Arikan; Defne Gunay; Arikan, Gizem; Gunay, Defne
Addressing climate change requires international effort from both governments and the public. Climate change concern is a crucial variable influencing public support for measures to address climate change. Combining country-level data with data from the Pew Research Center Spring 2015 Global Attitudes Survey we test whether perceived threats from climate change influence climate change concern. We distinguish between personal threat and planetary threat and we find that both threats have substantive effects on climate change concern with personal threat exerting a greater influence on climate change concern than planetary threat. The effects of both types of threats are also moderated by Gross Domestic Product per capita such that threats have stronger effects on climate change concern in high-income countries than in low-income countries. Our findings contribute to the existing literature and open up new debates concerning the role of threats in climate change concern and have implications for climate change communication.
