Sessiz resimli kitaplarda illüstrasyonun rolü ve bir uygulama / The role of illustration in wordless picturebooks and an application

Abstract

İnsanların kendisini ifade etmesinin en temel yöntemlerinden olan görsel hikaye anlatımı, yazının bulunuşu ile birlikte uzun bir süre kitaplardaki anlatımda ikinci öge olarak varlığını sürdürmüştür. Kağıdın keşfi ve baskı teknolojilerinin gelişiminin sağladığı kolaylıklar görsel hikaye anlatımının tekrar yükselişinin önünü açmış ve bu yükseliş ile birlikte görseller metni destekleyici ve açıklayıcı öğeler olarak kitaplarda var olmaya başlamışlardır. Kitaplar, 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren sadece görseli ve metni taşıyıcı bir nesne olmaktan çıkıp sanatçıların alternatif diller oluşturduğu birer sanat ürünü haline gelmişlerdir. Resimli kitaba olan ilginin artışı ile birlikte farklı resimli kitap türleri de ortaya çıkmaya başlamıştır. Bu çalışma oldukça yeni bir tür olan sessiz resimli kitapları ve bu kitaplardaki anlatıyı taşıyan illüstrasyonların rolünün incelenmesi üzerine oluşturulmuştur. Sessiz resimli kitaplar ile ilgili sınırlı sayıda kaynak ve araştırma bulunması sebebiyle gelişmekte olan tür ile ilgili literatüre katkı sağlamak amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma kapsamında kullanılan analiz yöntemi ele alınan örnek ve uygulama üzerinden görsel çözümlemesi yapılarak ve uygulama çalışmasının sonucunda sessiz resimli kitaplarda illüstrasyonun rolünün, sıralı biçimde bir araya gelerek hikayeyi oluşturmak aynı zamanda okuyucuya kendi hikayesini oluşturmasına yardımcı olmak olduğu görülmüştür. Her yaştan ve kültürlerden okuma yapılmasına olanak sağlayan sessiz resimli kitaplarda kişinin görsel okuma bilgisi ve becerisi kitabın anlaşılma oranı ile doğrudan ilişkili olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Visual storytelling, starting with the earliest known examples of ancient cave paintings, continued its existence as a second element in narration in books for a long time after the invention of writing. Discovery of the paper and facilities provided by developments in printing technologies led to the rise of visual storytelling again, and with this, visuals have begun to appear on books as supportive and explanatory elements for texts. After the second half of the 19th century, books have become more than just carrying texts and visuals. Artists, who started to put their own styles into picture books, have produced more free and compelling works of imagination. With the increasing interest for picture books, different picture book types have also begun to emerge. This study is based on this new appeared type called "wordless picture books" and a research for role of the illustrations that carries narrative in these books. There are limited number of sources and research on about this new genre called wordless picture books. Therefore with this study, it is aimed to contribute to the literature about this developing genre. In the scope of the research, method of the study is visual analysis of given examples and techniques. As a result of the researches and application study, it is seen that the role of the illustrations in wordless picture books is using sequential visual images to form narrative and at the same time helps the reader to create their own stories. In wordless picture books that allow reading from all ages and cultures, the visual reading knowledge and skill of the person is directly related to the understanding rate of the book.
