Abstract

Leo Brouwer (b. 1939) is a composer who has been influenced by various artistic ideas throughout his career. Brouwer himself and the academics who have studied his work has divided his compositions into three different periods based on changes in composition techniques and influences. This study aims to explain the factors that influenced Brouwer during his 'avant-garde' period and how he reflected them in his music, using the analysis of his piece La Espiral Eterna, composed in 1971. La Espiral Eterna has been attributed great importance by the composer himself, academics, and critics, and it is considered a 'milestone' in his work. The reason for the significance given to this piece and its selection as the subject of this thesis lies in the fact that it embodies all the elements that influenced Brouwer during his avant-garde period. The first part of the thesis discusses Brouwer's compositional language in different periods, particularly focusing on the avant-garde period in which he composed La Espiral Eterna and the factors that influenced him. Basic information is provided about the events that shaped his views on music during this period. In the second part, the analysis method followed in the thesis and the general framework of the thesis are explained. Theory and terminology used in the analysing of symmetric or cyclical structures, is described through various examples. The final part of the thesis is devoted to a detailed analysis of the piece La Espiral Eterna. The structural sections within the piece are divided into subheadings. The coherence and relationship of the smaller structures within each section, their connection to the section they belong to, and finally their relevance to the entire piece are examined. These findings are also explained in relation to the elements that influenced the composer during his avant-garde period, as discussed in the first section.

Her bölmeyi oluşturan küçük yapıların, önce birbirleri ile, ardından bulunduğu bölme ile, son olarak da eserin tamamı ile tutarlılığı ve ilişkisi özelden genele incelenmiştir. Bu bilgilerin aynı zamanda ilk bölümde anlatılan, bestecinin avangart döneminde etkilendiği unsurlar ile nasıl bağdaştığı açıklanmıştır.
