Abstract
The transition to hydrogen aims to develop a more sustainable, low-carbon, and energy-secure system by reducing fossil fuel dependency. Hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources, such as solar energy, is directly related to the Sustainable Development Goals. Green hydrogen, especially produced from renewable sources, has zero carbon emissions and is critical in dealing with climate change. Hydrogen is an effective solution in carbon-intensive sectors such as the transportation sector. It contributes to green development with hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and infrastructure investments. However, one of the most important challenges to the establishment of the hydrogen system is high initial investment costs. Green hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and infrastructure investments are very expensive, and clear policies, targets, and incentive mechanisms for hydrogen are missing or nascent, especially in developing countries in the first phase of transition. In this context, this study aims to conduct a cost-benefit analysis of the transition to hydrogen in airport ground services. In addition, this study aims to ensure that the three pillars of sustainability are achieved in the transition to hydrogen. The economic, social, and environmental impacts of the transition to green hydrogen have been analysed. Although the most important impact of this transformation is thought to be in the environmental dimension, it has been observed that it will provide both social and economic benefits. According to the results, the transition to hydrogen requires significant investment costs; it is seen that the transition to hydrogen will provide a competitive advantage in the long term and is a profitable investment, especially when carbon emission taxes are considered. Based on the results, the role of industry partners, policy makers, local and global authorities, and research institutions, who are important stakeholders of the hydrogen ecosystem, in achieving these goals has been discussed, and various suggestions have been developed.
