Özerk bir mecra ve sanat yapıtı olarak fotokitap

Abstract

Bu araştırma, fotokitabı tarihsel ve kültürel bir bağlamda tanımlamayı, onu diğer eser izleme deneyimleriyle karşılaştırarak özgün bir mecra ve özerk bir sanat yapıtı olarak eleştirel bir perspektifle incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Fotografik görüntünün kitap formunda kendine bulduğu yer ve bu formun bizim görüntüyü kavrayışımızı nasıl şekillendirip dönüştürdüğü bu araştırmanın temel sorularından olacaktır. Çalışma, fotoğrafın ortaya çıkışından çok kısa bir zaman sonrasında hayata geçirilen örneklerden başlayarak, zamanla ortaya çıkan sanat akımları, teknolojik gelişim ve politik değişimlerin etkisiyle dönüşen, bağımsızlaşan ve bugünkü çok katmanlı haline gelen fotokitabı merkezine alacaktır. Fotokitabın diğer basılı fotografik yayınlardan ayrılan yanları, sinema, edebiyat ve grafik tasarım bağlamları üzerinden de okunarak, bu disiplinlerle olan bağları detaylı örneklerle sunulacaktır. Fotografik anlatıyı sadece kitap mecrası üzerinden yürütmeyip, içeriğini onun içinde eriterek, okuyucuyu söz konusu anlatıyı görsel bir dille okumasına olanak sağlayan fotokitap kendine has bir mecra oluşturmuştur. Bu elle tutulabilir fiziki mekân, fotoğrafın ve fotoğraf sanatçısının kendini ifadesinde oldukça özgün bir deneyimi beraberinde getirmektedir. Kitap formunun, fotoğraf izleyicisine sunduğu gerek görsel, gerek fiziksel fırsatlar ve kitap formu yoluyla fotoğrafın tözüyle kurulabilecek kişisel deneyimler sebebiyle fotokitabın başlı başına özerk bir mecra olarak öne çıkması araştırmanın üzerinde duracağı temel noktalardan olacaktır.

This research aims to define the concept of the photobook in a historical and cultural context and provide a comparative reading in reference to other works of art while maintaining a critical perspective to the medium and work of art in terms of autonomy. The place where photographic image finds itself in the book form and how this form shapes and transforms our comprehension will be one of the main questions of this research. Starting from the very first works that has been brought to life soon after the invention of photography, the study will focus on photobooks which have been transformed, attained autonomy and grown into their current multi-layered position with influences from art movements, technological developments and political changes. The distinguishing aspects of photobooks from other printed photographic publications and forms will also be scrutinized in the context of cinema, literature, and design and its links with these disciplines will be presented in comprehensive examples. The photobook, which does not only carry out the photographic narrative over the book, but also melts its content in it, has forged a unique medium that allows the reader to read the narrative in a visual language. This tangible physical space delivers a rather authentic experience for the expression of photography and the photographer. The photobook as an autonomous medium will be the fundamental point of this research for the visual and physical opportunities the book form offers to the viewer and the personal experiences that can gained from the substance of photography can be established through it.
