Turkey's Public Diplomacy Initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa
(EGE UNIV FAC ECONOMICS & ADMIN SCIENCES, 2018) Elem Eyrice Tepeciklioglu; Ali Onur Tepeciklioglu; Betul Aydogan Unal; Ünal, Betül Aydoğan; Tepecıklıoglu, Elem Eyrıce; Eyrice Tepeciklioglu, Elem; Tepeciklioğlu, Ali Onur; Aydogan Unal, Betul
Public diplomacy initiatives occupy a central place in Turkey's recent foreign policy approach. In its efforts to increase Turkey's say in world politics and to deepen relations especially with the previously-neglected regions including Africa the incumbent government attaches great importance to public diplomacy activities. This study aims at systematically analyzing how Turkey uses these activities in Sub-Saharan Africa in order to achieve its foreign policy objectives. In this respect public diplomacy strategies used in enhancing Turkey's image and visibility in those countries and in influencing the preferences of their public have been classified as short medium and long term activities. Although there is a still-evolving literature on Turkey's Africa policy the studies focusing on public diplomacy instruments is limited. This study therefore seeks to fill this gap in the extant literature by adopting an established classification approach used in measuring the effectiveness of public diplomacy activities.

(Taylor and Francis Inc., 2021) Elem Eyrice Tepeciklioğlu; Ali Onur Tepeciklioglu; Tepeciklioglu, Elem Eyrice; Tepeciklioglu, Ali Onur
This book offers a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary analysis of Turkey-Africa relations. Bringing together renowned authors to discuss various dimensions of Turkey's African engagement while casting a critical analysis on the sustainability of Turkey-Africa relations this book draws upon the rising power literature to examine how Turkish foreign policy has been conceptualized and situated theoretically. Moving from an examination of the multilateral dimension of Turkey's Africa policy with a focus on soft power instruments of public diplomacy humanitarian/development assistance religious activities and airline diplomacy it then illuminates the economic and military dimensions of Turkey's policy including trade relations business practices security cooperation and peacekeeping discourse. Overall it shows how Turkey's African opening can be integrated into its wider interest in gaining global power status and its desire to become a strong regional power. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of Turkish foreign policy/politics African politics and more broadly to international relations. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
