Article Aging as an Ideological Discourse in Local Cartoons: The Example of TRT Cocuk(MARMARA UNIV FAC COMMUNICATION, 2020) Burcu Dabak Ozdemir; Urun Yildiran Onk; Onk, Urun Yildiran; Ozdemir, Burcu Dabak; Yıldıran, Ürün ÖnkThe representations of the elderly in cartoons provide a great opportunity to discuss the position of aging referring to ideology and power in social relations. This study aims to examine how the elderly individuals are represented in Turkish children's cartoons on television. The research focusses on TRT Cocuk channel due to its high ratings among children's channels and its emphasis on producing local narratives. In this regard this research is limited to the analysis of three cartoons and their characters, Maysa ve Bulut (a member of a larger group than the family) Rafadan Tayfa (the elder of the neighborhood) and Kardesim Ozi (a family member). Characters in these cartoons are analysed by a qualitative content analysis with reference to the theories in aging. Maysa ve Bulut emphasizes neo-conservatism through a traditional narrative highlighting positive relationship between elderly characters and the children. Rafadan Tayfa narrates the positive transformation and the rediscovery of aging in neo-liberal neighborhoods. Finally Kardesim Ozi portrays the hybrid experience of elderly individuals who cannot develop adequate relationships with their surroundings and are stuck between neo-conservatism and neo-liberal economy. In this regard the representation of the elderly and elderly-children relationships in cartoons coincide with the discourses produced by neo-conservatism in Turkey's cultural arena despite their different depictions.Article On the edge of alienation: La Vis(INTELLECT LTD, 2021) Burcu Dabak OzdemirThis analysis will show that Metallika is designed as an absurd and exaggerated form of a mechanical industrial society in which different types of alienation are organized.Article Constructing girlhood in Turkey: astrology in the Turkish HeyGirl magazine(Routledge, 2023) Burcu Dabak ÖzdemirThis article examines 144 horoscope forecasts in the Turkish girls’ magazine HeyGirl over the period 2019–20 using critical discourse analysis. It argues that although astrology is seemingly playful and harmless it works as the “institutionalization of superstition” by encouraging girls to judge evaluate and classify themselves through their experience by using the idea of a “perfect” future. This study therefore seeks to understand what kinds of tactics and strategies are used by horoscope forecasts in order to work like an ideologically disciplinary instrument. Analysis of the macrostructure of the horoscope forecasts identified four principal linguistic and textual tactics used by HeyGirl’s horoscopes: detect (or invent) a situation, transform the situation into a problem, offer a solution for the invented problem, make a promise. Each horoscope forecast was examined by separating its content into these four tactics. These separations open up the envisaged inter-relations between situation problem solution and promise. These envisaged inter-relations are used to show how astrology transforms ideology and discourses into “knowledge” which comes from the future in order to produce good docile girls in the Turkish context. © 2023 Elsevier B.V. Bu kapsamda üç oturumda on sekiz katılımcıyla görüşülmüştür. Her iki araştırmadan elde edilen veriler birlikte değerlendirilmiş, üç tematik başlıkta toplanmış tablolar aracılığıyla görselleştirilmiş ve yakın dönem izleyici çalışmalarında öne çıkan eleştirel kuramlar bağlamında analiz edilerek yorumlanmıştır. Article Women who are Deterritorialisated by Mouring: Antigone(Rector CIU Cyprus Int Univ, 2020) Burcu Dabak Ozdemir; Ozdemir, Burcu DabakThis study aims to bring a new understanding to Sofokleks' Antigone by using critical discourse analysis. Antigone is accepted as a threshold text which emerges during the time the society organized at the collective level transforms into a system of State. This study claims that the tensions caused by these different types of transformations are symbolized through the concepts of ritual and ceremony. Bearing this claim and argument in mind the aim of this study is to read the rituals which are the cultural heritage of humanity together with the deeds of the female character Antigone who gave her name to the play and to explain these deeds and their consequences with the processes of rituals. The theoretical explanations on the concept of ritual form the core of the critical discourse analysis used to examine Antigone text. The claim of this study is that Antigone a female rebellious character remains at the liminal state and as a result of this she gains the skills to design destructive acts by being liberated from all social contracts and identities. This destructive state provides a new possibility of reading on social tensions observed during the time of transformation.Article The Furious Women and Victim Men of Turkish Pop Music: A Lyrical Exploration of Turkish Pop Hits of the 2000s(Routledge, 2025) Burcu Dabak Özdemir; Ozdemir, Burcu DabakThis study examines the lyrics of pop music as a political and cultural instrument specifically analyzing 55 popular songs in Turkey from 2000 to 2010. The study begins by identifying four common points shared by post-feminist and femvertising discourse: (1) love yourself or love your body (2) your decisions are important (3) trust yourself and (4) buy to feel good. The study then critiques these four points from a feminist perspective: The first point contradicts feminist body politics. The second point is a result of neoliberal individualism and contradicts the idea of feminist gathering. The third point misappropriates feminist political and ideological concepts by placing them into an apolitical cultural climate. And the last point embraces commodity feminism.Article Postfeminism a la Turca Postfeminism in New Turkish Romantic Comedies(DUKE UNIV PRESS, 2021) Burcu Dabak Ozdemir; Ozdemir, Burcu DabakThis essay analyzes how postfeminism is constructed on a visual level in the Turkish context. It uses theories of postfeminism to discuss new popular romantic comedies of Turkish cinema by comparing the new female protagonists with the women portrayed in Yesilcam melodramas. Three films-Kocan Kadar Konus (dir. Kivanc Baruonu 2014) Hadi Insallah (dir. Ali Taner Baltaci 2014) and Ask Nerede? (dir. Semra Dundar 2015)- are analyzed from a postfeminist perspective opening up a new scholarly discussion about the place of postfeminism in the Turkish cinema. These films represent what may be termed Turkified postfeminism which has been commonly discussed for the Western world but not sufficiently taken into account for Middle Eastern women.Article The Furious Women and Victim Men of Turkish Pop Music: A Lyrical Exploration of Turkish Pop Hits of the 2000s(TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2025) Burcu Dabak OzdemirThis study examines the lyrics of pop music as a political and cultural instrument specifically analyzing 55 popular songs in Turkey from 2000 to 2010.
