Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1Residents' awareness and knowledge of sustainable smart cities(EDP Sciences, 2023) Ebru Alakavuk; Duygu Çinar Umdu; Aleyna Koyuncu; Nilay Derya Baro; Alakavuk, Ebru; Umdu, Duygu Cinar; Baro, Nilay Derya; Koyuncu, Aleyna; M. PushkarevSustainable and smart city studies are issues that local governments business circles and the academic community often deal with regarding city and neighborhood developments. Various grant calls and research studies on the subject are frequently made and its importance in the professional field is increasing. However in these studies where the society stands is often questioned. In addition consumers and users are critical to realizing a sustainable and energy-efficient world. These users and consumers can be defined as an urban society in cities. Awareness knowledge and participation of city residents about sustainable and smart cities will play a significant role in the city's journey to be sustainable and smart. In other words increasing society's awareness of sustainability will change attitudes and habits and make the city's structure more sustainable and smarter. In this study A 28-question survey was conducted with 518 participants on the society's perspective and knowledge of sustainable smart urban areas. It was found that the participants had general knowledge and awareness of sustainability. However they had partial and little knowledge about sustainable urban development and smart city practices and only 15.31% of the participants knew all the terms such as sustainable environment sustainable society and smart life related to these concepts. While some of the results are compatible with each other many of them are contradictory. Different studies can be done based on these contradictions. © 2024 Elsevier B.V. Master Thesis Biophilic Design in Architecture: Applications in Healthcare, Office and Educational Buildings(2025) Çıtak, Büşra; Alakavuk, EbruNature and humanity have always been in a state of interaction throughout history. Mankind has observed and, at times, imitated nature. With the modernization of the world, the development of cities, and the increase in buildings, a visible boundary has emerged between humanity and nature. People have shifted to a lifestyle disconnected from nature, spending most of their time indoors. In this thesis, the relationship between nature and humans is examined within interior spaces through the use of biophilic design patterns in educational, healthcare, and office buildings. The impact of these designs on people is analyzed in detail for each building type. For each category, three buildings were selected, with examples chosen from low, medium, and high-cost structures to explore how biophilic design patterns are integrated into architecture across different budget levels. The aim of this thesis is to compare biophilic design implementations in hospital, educational, and office buildings, and to analyze through a literature review how biophilic design varies in architecture depending on the different needs of building types and cost differences.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1THE EVALUATION OF AN OFFICE BUILDING ACCORDING TO LEED CERTIFICATE LIGHTING CRITERIA(ZNACK PUBLISHING HOUSE, 2019) Idil Bakir Kucukkaya; Ebru Alakavuk; Alakavuk, Ebru; Kucukkaya, Idil BakirThe progress in industrial and technological areas which started with the Industrial Revolution has deteriorated the ecological balance and depleted the natural resources. Sustainability which initially seemed as a solution within this concept became an important part of Interior Architecture as in disciplines related to design. The lighting systems of the offices that are the secondary living areas should be evaluated in terms of sustainability as well. In this paper the energy savings and loss of the artificial office lighting systems has been calculated according to the ASHRAE/IES standard 90.1-20078(1) which are included in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certificate's lighting criteria [1]. The wattage of the artificial lighting systems has been calculated while the systems were in use. The results of these measurements have been compared with lighting wattage and thus the lighting energy savings and loss have been configured. The office has been comparatively analyzed according to LEED criteria.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Integration process of theoretical courses with design studios in undergraduate education: Case studies of architecture and interior design studios(E D P SCIENCES, 2016) Ecehan Ozmehmet; Ebru Alakavuk; Alakavuk, Ebru; Ozmehmet, Ecehan; H Caliskan; I Onder; E Masal; S BesolukThe formulations of studios are the most critical problem of design studies because the foundation of further architectural education is based on these design studios. This paper focuses on discussions of studio-based design learning systems and curriculum developments on integral design studios that aims significant and innovative frameworks. In this context integrated design studios are the newest approaches of architectural education. In this education system every studio has its own integral course. Integral courses give support to the design studios. This support can be either theoretical or practical. Knowledge that is related with the context of the design studio can be explained in this integrated course in some cases in some cases as simulation program can be explained in some parts of the course. The support of the integral courses to the studios must be evaluated deeply. This paper presents the positive parts and negative parts of the new integral studio approach in this context. By this way strong and weak parts of this education system is put forward.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 3Facade optimization for an education building using multi-objective evolutionary algorithms(LLC Editorial of Journal ""Light Technik"", 2020) Arda Agirbas; Ebru Alakavuk; Alakavuk, Ebru; Agirbas, ArdaArchitectural design of a facade both at the aes-thetic point of view and from the point of view of internal daylighting performance of the build-ing can be considered as a complex task. In this study we implement a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to formally exploration the process of reconstruction of the education building’s fa-cade. The purpose of this research is to create a facade configuration by considering the size and loca-tion of elements and their materials when creating a suitable internal daylight distribution. The total construction cost of the building’s exterior and the daylight performance of the building’s interior are considered as objectives. The problem formula-tion includes two conflicting objectives which are to increase daylighting aspect on each floor and reduce the total construction cost of the facade. To de-tect the approximation of Pareto fronts including non-dominated solutions we used a fast and elitist multi-objective genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). Computational and architectural results show that NSGA-II is efficient enough to demonstrate eligible facade design alternatives. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Besides Design Studio courses theoretical courses and practical courses also take place in the curriculum of Architecture program. While Theoretical courses are history of Architecture introduction to Architecture etc. practical courses are, Building construction courses technical courses. Both Technical and construction courses give knowledge about the main principles of Architecture for supporting the Design Studio. In the Design Studio which is the main course of Architecture education students learn approaches to design and also learn the way of thinking in innovative way. Integral Design Studio is a new approach to architecture education. In the integral design studio there is a theoretical course that supports the main theme of the Design Studio where as this theme sometimes can be sustainability sometimes it can be earthquake. In this paper the experience of the writer that is about the integral design studio is explained. In this integral design studio earthquake is the main theme. The problem is how to integrate earthquake theme to the Design Studio. The positive parts and negative parts of the new integral studio approach in this context are presented.Master Thesis Energy and Daylight Performance Analysis of Double Skin Facade Systems in Hot Arid Climate: A Case Study in Nigeria(2018) Gambo, Barau Wurma; Alakavuk, EbruBu çalıĢmada, Çift Kabuk Cephelerin enerji ve gün ıĢığı performansı, bilgisayar simülasyonları kullanılarak değerlendirilmiĢtir. Article An Approach For Determination Of Risky Buildings And Building Energy Performance Concerning Urban Renewal In Turkey(2023) HANDE ODAMAN KAYA; EBRU ALAKAVUK; Alakavuk, Ebru; Kaya, Hande OdamanIn May 2012 “Urban Renewal Law” for reducing the expected seismic risk for existing buildings was published. Depending on this law existing old buildings should have stability tests for the decision, if it should be demolished or strengthened. This article is mainly concentrating on the earthquake stability and energy performance of a case building regarding the physical and environmental dimensions of urban renewal. Case building is a deficient structure that couldn’t catch the static regulations and so demolished. Regarding the urban renewal process a new building was constructed following the energy performance regulations. In this framework structural and energy performance analysis of the existing deficient building are done to present the conditions first. Then the energy performance of the new building is analysed to be compared with the demolished building. For the static analysis of the existing building ideCAD for the energy performance analysis BEP-TR 2 programs are used. As a result of this study the structural performance of the case building is examined to display the need of a new construction and then the development of the energy performance is presented by the comparison in between demolished and new buildings.
