Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1A Proposal for Turkish/German Cross-Language Q&A System(ACAD CONFERENCES LTD, 2012) Samsun Basarici; Ibrahim Zincir; Sabah Balta; Tohid Ahmed Rana; Basarici, Samsun; Zincir, Ibrahim; Balta, Sabah; Rana, Tohid Ahmed; M GascoOver the last decade many approaches have been introduced about Q&A (Question & Answer) Systems. The problem with many of these works is that they mainly implement English as the underlying language. With the tremendous growth of computer usage in daily life and implementation ofe-government systems the need for cross-language Q&A Systems increased enormously especially for immigration countries such as Germany. Beside of Turkey and Turkish speaking countries the biggest Turkish population in Europe is living in Germany. Over the last decade the communication between the administration and this minority has not always been easy. The main approach of the German administration is enforcing this minority to gain the same language skills like the native speakers (which is not a feasible solution aspast experiences showed). This paper introduces an onlineconcept for cross-language Q&A System which accepts both Turkish and German as the underlying languages to guide the community members to the appropriate person inside the e-government systems.Article Citation - WoS: 16Citation - Scopus: 18Adolescents' eveningness chronotype and cyberbullying perpetration: the mediating role of depression-related aggression and anxiety-related aggression(TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2020) Sule Betul Tosuntas; Sabah Balta; Emrah Emirtekin; Kagan Kircaburun; Mark D. Griffiths; Kircaburun, Kagan; Emirtekin, Emrah; Balta, Sabah; Tosuntaş, Şule Betül; Griffiths, Mark D.Recent empirical evidence has indicated a positive relationship between university students' evening-type chronotype and their cyberbullying perpetration (CBP) scores while controlling for gender and Big Five personality dimensions. The aims of the present study were (i) to replicate the results of the aforementioned study with an adolescent sample and (ii) to examine the mediating role of depression anxiety and aggression on the relationship between chronotype and CBP. In order to investigate these aims 493 high-school students were recruited to complete a survey that included the Reduced Morningness-Eveningness Scale Short Depression Scale State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Short Form Aggression Questionnaire and Cyberbullying Offending Scale. Results indicated that while females had higher depression and anxiety scores males scored higher on CBP. Path analysis showed that aggression depression-related aggression and anxiety-related aggression fully mediated the relationship between evening-type chronotype and CBP. There were also significant gender differences in the model. Furthermore physiological factors had an indirect effect on CBP via psychological risk factors and emotion-related negative behaviors.Conference Object Analysis of e-Learning outcomes at higher education: A case study(Academic Conferences Limited info@academic-conferences.org, 2014) Ibrahim Zincir; Tohid Ahmed Rana; Samsun Mustafa Basarici; Sabah Balta; Basarici, Samsun; Zincir, Ibrahim; Balta, Sabah; Rana, Tohid Ahmed; K.T. Levinsen , R. OrngreenAs explained in our paper "A Novel Approach To E-Learning: Yasar University E-Learning System (YES)" (Zincir et al. 2013) since 2009 every student who attends Yasar University (Izmir Turkey) regardless of their department has to take part in seven courses defined as University Foundation Courses (UFND). These courses are part of the university's effort to graduate students who are not only hard-working and respectable but also who are responsible and beneficent to society and the environment that they are living in. Since approximately 4000 students attend these courses every term in academic year 2012-2013 an E-learning system called Yasar University E-Learning System (YES) was introduced to take these courses online. It was a novel approach that encourages the students to get involved in the courses much more actively since it grades them according to their learning behaviors. Basically YES monitors all the activities of the students all the time once they are connected to the system. These activities include how and when they access the information supplied materials forums and chat rooms. This paper discusses the outcomes & the outputs of YES by presenting a brief insight into the behavior of the students inside an e-learning environment and by analyzing the correlation between the success of the students and the way they interact with YES. © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Griffiths; Kircaburun, Kagan; Emirtekin, Emrah; Balta, Sabah; Griffiths, Mark D.Preliminary studies have indicated that childhood emotional maltreatment (i.e. abuse and neglect) can be associated with higher cyberbullying perpetration (CBP) among university students. The purpose of the present study was to test the direct and indirect effects of childhood emotional abuse (CEA) on CBP via trait mindfulness and trait emotional intelligence (TEI). A total of 470 adolescent students participated in the study and completed a questionnaire comprising measures of the aforementioned variables. Path analysis showed that trait mindfulness but not TEI was a partial mediator between CEA and CBP among the total sample males and females. Results indicated that there were other factors that explain the relationship between CEA and CBP in addition to lower mindfulness. These findings suggest that developing mindfulness-based intervention programs for adolescents who have been emotionally abused as a child may reduce their engagement in cyberbullying. This study is the first to document the direct role of CEA on CBP and indirect via trait mindfulness among adolescents.Article Citation - WoS: 26Citation - Scopus: 25Compensatory usage of the internet: The case of mukbang watching on youtube(Korean Neuropsychiatric Association, 2021) Kağan Kircaburun; Sabah Balta; Emrah Emirtekin; Şule Betül Tosuntaş; Zsolt Demetrovics; Mark D. Griffiths; Kircaburun, Kagan; Emirtekin, Emrah; Balta, Sabah; Tosuntaş, Şule Betül; Demetrovics, Zsolt; Griffiths, Mark D.Objective Accumulating empirical research has emphasized that a wide range of online activities–such as using social networking sites–can be performed in order to compensate unattained needs or to cope with negative affect and psychopathological symptoms. Al-though the correlates of problematic social networking use have been extensively investigated less is known about problematic YouTube use (PYU) an umbrella term grouping a number of different activities (e.g. viewing of online video games watching specific YouTube channels). Furthermore nothing is known concerning increasingly popular and distinct YouTube-related activities such as mukbang watching (i.e. watching livestream “eating broadcasts” where someone eats various foods in front of the camera while interacting with viewers). The aim of the present study was to examine the mediating role of problematic mukbang watching (PMW) on the relationships between depression and loneliness with PYU. Methods An online survey that comprised assessment tools for aforementioned variables was administered to 217 mukbang viewers (mean age=20.58 years range 18–33 years). Results Results indicated that PMW was positively related to loneliness and PYU. Depression was positively and directly associated with PYU but was not associated with PMW. Conclusion Further research is required to better understand the psychological processes underlying problematic mukbang watching and its association with other mental health conditions (e.g. addictive disorders eating disorders). © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Griffiths; Emirtekin, Emrah; Denes, Amanda; Kircaburun, Kagan; Jonason, Peter; Balta, Sabah; Tosuntaş, Şule Betül; Griffiths, Mark D.Recently empirical research has shown dark personality traits (i.e. Machiavellianism psychopathy narcissism sadism spitefulness) to be associated with problematic and addictive online behaviors. However their direct relationships with problematic smartphone use (PSU) have yet to be examined. The present study investigated the direct and indirect associations of dark personality traits with PSU via fearful and dismissing attachment styles among 546 participants. Results indicated that men had higher scores on measures assessing dark personality traits and women had higher PSU. Narcissism and spitefulness were directly associated with PSU in the total sample men and women. Machiavellianism was indirectly associated with PSU via fearful attachment among men and sadism was directly and indirectly associated with PSU via fearful attachment among women. Findings suggest that dark personality traits may play a contributory role in higher PSU (with different traits having different effects among men and women) and that attachment styles partially explain the relationship between dark traits and PSU. © 2019 Elsevier B.V. The laws require tourist guide candidates to successfully complete their internship tour and get a certificate. Since the time in this internship period is limited and there are restricting factors such as transportation accommodation, many of the tourism places couldn't be included in this internship period. Besides the lack of experienced and competent guides in the visited places is also another negative factor reducing the quality and efficiency of the training. Technological support of the training of tourist guide candidates would effectively reduce the negativities of traditional education methods. Thus benefiting from computer technologies and audiovisual systems during the internship of tourist guide candidates would result in an increase in the effectiveness and usefulness of the training tour and would make it possible to visit more places in a shorter period. This study is a presentation on how distance education method could be implemented and an attempt to show the benefits could be obtained from implementation of these methods along with the possible problems that are predicted to arise.Article Citation - WoS: 58Citation - Scopus: 73Employment of the workforce with disabilities in the hospitality industry(Channel View Publications, 2011) Murat Bengisu; Sabah Balta; Balta, Sabah; Bengisu, MuratA three-stage Delphi study was conducted with experts and professionals working in the fields of disability and hospitality in order to identify some basic principles with respect to employment of people with disabilities (PWD). The potential effects of employing PWD on safety cost efficiency service quality and management were investigated. Potentials and limitations of people with different types and degrees of disabilities with regard to jobs in the hospitality industry were also questioned. A notable guiding principle emanating from this study is that hiring of employees should be based on merit suitability and capability of the candidate regardless of the presence or degree of disability. Another important outcome is that the job or task appointed to PWD should not deteriorate the disability. A common guideline expressed by the participants was that jobs which critically require a certain sense or ability are not suitable for PWD who do not possess this sense or ability even with the aid of technology or by other means. However apart from such extreme and obvious cases experts mostly agree that PWD can fulfill any task in the hospitality industry as long as their professional knowledge and skills fit those tasks. © 2011 Taylor & Francis. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Ethics in the working place refers to the rules of the workplace that an employee has to comply with along with the rules of society. In the study the concept of ethics has been examined within theories of ethics followed by a conceptual framework of making ethical decisions. The scope of the study consists of interviews conducted with 60 managers working in a chain hotel. The interview consists of 5 different scenarios relating to ethical dilemmas. The scenarios are composed of three different ethics approaches (moral justice approach subjective approach and contract -based theoretical approach). In the analysis of the data the Manova Analysis was carried out. The results suggest that managers prefer the contract -based theoretical approach more frequently in decision making. It was also found that managers differ in their choice of ethical approaches in terms of the scenarios. This difference is caused by subjective approaches which are used when dealing with problems related to socio-cultural and institutional reputation and ecology. © University of the Aegean. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. The attitudes and performance of public servants have a crucial importance on the satisfaction of the customer relationships where in this context customers are the citizens. Thus well-trained and highly motivated employees are indispensable elements of governmental services as a priority. Therefore controlling public servants' professional improvements performances and their vocational capacities are the key factors to provide high quality services. Consequently a good training and tracking system for employees can provide useful data about current level of employee performance to the state and the data produced by the system can be used to promote employees. Current online training systems do not monitor their members continuously but only evaluate them for that specific instance which in return does not help much in improving employee performance. In this paper we propose an eLearning system to improve performance of public servants. The system combines exterior website and interior management systems to provide complete and effective information and service.Article İşyerinde Öfke Kontrolü Eğitiminin Etkililiği: Otel İşletmeleri Çalışanları İle Yapılan Bir Araştırma(2017) Ayşegül Dönmez; SABAH BALTA; Fisun ŞENUZUN AYKAR; Senem YILMAZ; Yılmaz, Senem; Aykar, Fisun Şenuzun; Dönmez, Ayşegül; Balta, SabahBu araştırmanın amacı otel işletmelerinde çalışan personele uygulanan öfke kontrolü eğitiminin etkililiğini saptamaktır. Interviews were conducted with the local populace, government officials and industry professionals. The interviews were then analyzed according to qualitative content analysis method and were supported by findings from relevant literature. The study aims to prove the advantages and the disadvantages of the rural tourism approach on villages and towns that are supported by tourism whether they are new destinations or destinations that are already established and known by the industry and the tourists. The study focuses on experiences of the interviewed individuals that are practicing or affected by rural tourism and the tourism industry in general. These effects are studied in separate topics and the questions were prepared accordingly. The findings are compiled in the last section of the paper, showing the effects of rural tourism and the other relevant alternative tourism types. The results vary between destinations with established destinations being somewhat damaged or overly dependent on tourism and new destinations being left out, requiring more marketing. Established destinations are suffering from over-tourism and switching to rural tourism activities instead of the traditional mass tourism approach.Article Citation - WoS: 192Citation - Scopus: 212Neuroticism Trait Fear of Missing Out and Phubbing: The Mediating Role of State Fear of Missing Out and Problematic Instagram Use(Springer, 2020) Sabah Balta; Emrah Emirtekin; Kağan Kircaburun; Mark D. Griffiths; Kircaburun, Kagan; Emirtekin, Emrah; Balta, Sabah; Griffiths, Mark D.One of the relatively new negative consequences of smartphone use is “phubbing” (snubbing someone while an individual checks their smartphone in the middle of a real-life conversation). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the direct and indirect associations of neuroticism trait anxiety and trait fear of missing out with phubbing via state fear of missing out and problematic Instagram use. A total of 423 adolescents and emerging adults aged between 14 and 21 years (53% female) participated in the study. Findings indicated that females had significantly higher scores of phubbing fear of missing out problematic Instagram use trait anxiety and neuroticism. Path analysis showed that trait fear of missing out and neuroticism were indirectly associated with phubbing via state fear of missing out and problematic Instagram use. State fear of missing out was directly and indirectly associated with phubbing via problematic Instagram use. The present study is the first to demonstrate empirical evidence for the relationship between different dimensions of fear of missing out problematic Instagram use and phubbing. © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Griffiths; Süral, İrfan; Kircaburun, Kagan; Emirtekin, Emrah; March, Evita; Balta, Sabah; Griffiths, Mark D.Background: Research has shown that personality traits can have an important role in the development and maintenance of behavioral addictions. However the relationship between dark personality traits (i.e. Machiavellianism psychopathy narcissism sadism spitefulness) and ‘study addiction’ has yet to be investigated. Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to examine the associations of dark traits with study addiction among the total sample males and females separately while adjusting for the Big Five personality traits (i.e. extroversion neuroticism agreeableness openness conscientiousness). Methods: A total of 716 university students completed an online survey including questions assessing the aforementioned variables. Results: Hierarchical regression analysis suggested that being female neuroticism conscientiousness Machiavellianism and sadism were positively associated with study addiction. However dark personality traits (i.e. Machiavellianism sadism) were significantly related to study addiction only in males but not in females. Conclusions: Findings of this preliminary study suggest that dark personality traits may be better at explaining male addictive studying patterns and that gender should be taken into account when investigating the role of personality in the development of study addiction. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Griffiths; Kircaburun, Kagan; Emirtekin, Emrah; Balta, Sabah; Griffiths, Mark D.Preliminary evidence suggests that psychopathological factors (e.g. depression) are associated with higher engagement in cyberbullying perpetration and those with elevated body image dissatisfaction (BID) are more susceptible to depression. However the possible impact of body image dissatisfaction (BID) on cyberbullying remains untested. The present study examined the direct and indirect relationships of BID with cyberbullying via depression among a sample of 507 university students (mean age 21.37 years, range 18–44 years). t tests showed that males had a higher prevalence of cyberbullying than females. Structural equation modeling indicated that BID was directly and indirectly associated with cyberbullying via depression among the total sample and males. However BID was only indirectly related to cyberbullying via depression among females. Depression fully explained the relationship between BID and cyberbullying among females although there were additional mediating factors between BID and cyberbullying among males. The findings are in accordance with theoretical models suggesting that individuals’ personal characteristics including psychopathological factors are associated with cyberbullying. Furthermore males attempt to cope with their body image–related psychopathology with more externalizing behaviors than females. © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Griffiths; Joel Billieux; Sural, İrfan; Kircaburun, Kagan; Emirtekin, Emrah; Balta, Sabah; Billieux, Joel; Griffiths, Mark D.Growing empirical evidence has identified specific psychological and contextual risk factors associated with problematic smartphone use (PSU). However the potential direct and indirect impact of childhood emotional maltreatment (CEM) on PSU remains largely unexplored despite the established role of CEM in the onset of other excessive problematic and addictive behaviors. Consequently the purpose of the present study was to test the direct and indirect relationships of emotional abuse and neglect (two facets of CEM) with PSU via specific mediational pathways including body image dissatisfaction (BID) social anxiety and depression. The sample comprised 443 adolescents who completed a questionnaire that included assessment tools of aforementioned variables. Multiple mediation model results indicated that CEM was directly and indirectly associated with PSU via BID depression BID-related depression and BID-related social anxiety. Results suggested that emotionally traumatic experiences were associated with PSU in adolescents and that this relationship may partially be explained by BID and psychosocial risk factors. The present study draws caution to the amplifying roles of CEM and BID on increased PSU. The results of the study have important clinical and public health implications but additional research is needed before interventions can be developed and implemented on the basis of present results.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 10The Role of Procrastination Between Personality Traits and Addictive Mukbang Watching Among Emerging Adults(SAGE Publications Inc., 2022) Kağan Kircaburun; Evita March; Sabah Balta; Emrah Emirtekin; Tarık Kışla; Mark D. Griffiths; Kircaburun, Kagan; Emirtekin, Emrah; Kışla, Tarık; March, Evita; Balta, Sabah; Griffiths, Mark D.The role of personality traits in the development of addictive use of different online activities has been extensively demonstrated in the previous studies. One new type of online activity is the watching of mukbang (the South Korean term for “eating broadcasts”). However very little is known about addictive mukbang watching (AMW) and its relationship to personality constructs. The present study investigated the direct and indirect associations of Big Five personality traits (i.e. extroversion neuroticism agreeableness openness conscientiousness) and dark personality traits (i.e. narcissism Machiavellianism psychopathy sadism spitefulness) with AMW via procrastination. An online survey that comprised items assessing the aforementioned variables was completed by 222 university students who had watched mukbang at least once in the previous week. Path analysis indicated that extroversion was indirectly negatively associated with AMW via procrastination. Furthermore conscientiousness sadism and procrastination were directly positively associated with higher AMW. Findings suggest that individuals may develop and maintain uncontrolled mukbang watching in order to procrastinate and personality traits may play a contributing role in this association. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.
