Assessing the sources of competitiveness of the US states
(EMERALD GROUP PUBLISHING LTD, 2017) Murat Akpinar; Ozge Can; Melike Mermercioglu; Can, Ozge; Mermercioglu, Melike; Akpinar, Murat
Purpose - This study aims to test the emerald model on the regional basis for the identification of the most important sources of competitiveness in the states of the US. Design/methodology/approach - Using the emerald model and its assertions data are collected over the period 1998-2013 from 47 states in the US. Multiple regression analysis is performed with a lag structure of four six and eight years as alternative time intervals to explain the dependent variable. Findings - The empirical results support the emerald model except for its R&D attractiveness dimension in its ability to explain competitiveness in the states of the US. In the longer term (eight-year lag) cluster attractiveness has the highest impact followed by environmental attractiveness ownership attractiveness educational attractiveness and talent attractiveness. Comparison of regression models with different time lags indicates that once the very early phase is over the impacts of most attractiveness dimensions become rather consistent across time and do not disappear. Originality/value - The study contributes to the literature on the measurement of regional competitiveness by performing an overall assessment of the emerald model and by analyzing the impacts of the model's dimensions on competitiveness over time. On the other hand the identification of the sources of regional competitiveness paves the way for a more efficient allocation of resources regarding policies and improvement programs.

Corporate Social Responsibility in Turkey An Institutional Analysis of Social Responsibility in Turkey during the 2000s
(Springer-Verlag Berlin, 2021) Turker, Duygu; Can, Ozge
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been one of the most dynamic concepts of business literature. It evolves over time and significantly varies across contexts. The joint effect of these two dimensions requires analyzing the notion of social responsibility more frequently than most concepts. The current study attempts to contribute to the literature by focusing on the current practices of CSR in Turkey. In addition to the large-scale effect of global industrial trends and technological advancements, Turkey has also experienced a highly complex political, economic, and social transition during the 2000s. Considering the impact of dynamic and competing institutional logics, the study tries to provide a deeper understanding on how CSR perception and practices have evolved in Turkish business context to date. The study reveals that philanthropic component of CSR has been strengthened as a phenomenon in the nexus of family, religion, community, and market logics. Whereas, the ethical and environmental components are not fully integrated into the CSR agenda of Turkish business organizations. CSR has been also polarized during the 2000s in line with the overall political climate of country. Under the politics of government party, which has been in the office since 2002, business organizations are highly cautious on which issues they should address or whom they should work with.

Covid-19 Salgınının Türkiye’deki İşletmelere Etkileri: Sorunlar Dönüşümler Olanaklar
    (2021) Ozge Can; Can, Ozge

Determinants of inter-firm networks among tenants of science technology parks
(Oxford University Press, 2014) Özgecan Koçak; Ozge Can; Can, Ozge; Kocak, Ozgecan
Science and technology parks (STPs) try to facilitate networking among their tenants by (i) creating a favorable ecology for collaboration through selection of tenants and (ii) encouraging the formation of ties among these firms through events and introductions. We investigate the effect of these interventions on data collected from managers and tenants of 12 STPs in Turkey. In analyses that include STP level fixed effects to control for unobserved heterogeneity in parks' characteristics we find ecological characteristics as well as manager interventions to have some effect on prevalence of inter-firm relationships: Sectoral homogeneity is associated with greater numbers prevalence of knowledge sharing joint development and client ties. Tenants whose general managers have greater presence at the park have more equipment-sharing ties and attendance at STP-organized events increases knowledge-sharing ties. STP managers' brokerage activities contribute to equipment sharing ties. © The Author 2013. Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of Associazione ICC. Ege Bölgesi’ndeki Çevreci Sivil Toplum Kuruluşları: Örgütsel Özellikler ve İlişkiler
(2022) Ozge Can; DEFNE GONENC; Can, Ozge; Gonenc, Defne

Experience Sampling Methodology: A Systematic Review and Discussion for Organizational Research
(Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited, 2020) Ozge Can; Can, Ozge
In organizational research growing attention has been given to the dynamic nature of workplace relationships and how such dynamic processes shape key behavioural outcomes. Experience sampling methodology (ESM) brings more opportunity than any other research option to examine such fluctuations and relevant causal relationships. ESM can be described as a quantitative method which allows individuals to assess discrete evaluative states on multiple events by combining three distinct elements, person variables and occasion. Despite its increasing prevalence and popularity however there has been only a few attempts to investigate the most appropriate design measurement and analysis choices for experience sampling data. Even though ESM has been utilized in organizational research for some time systematic investigations regarding how these issues have been addressed and how the method has been applied to specific organizational topics are limited. This study provides a systematic and critical assessment of the use of ESM in current organizational research (2010-2020) by reviewing a random sample of 50 ESM studies indexed in ISI Web of Science with the aim of identifying the current state of practice. The selected studies were analysed based on several methodological aspects including the type of ESM protocol applied sample characteristics data sources specified interval and total duration of data collection structure and properties of designated measures analytic strategy and the research model to be tested. Findings show that organization studies vary considerably based on how they design and implement ESM. Moreover despite the availability of good practices many studies fail to attain recommended standards about sample size data collection procedures data characteristics and measurement quality. As such this paper offers several insights regarding how timebased within-person frameworks can be improved in future studies to account for dynamic organizational phenomena. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. How authenticity of corporate social responsibility affects organizational attractiveness: Stakeholder perceptions of organizational ideology
(John Wiley and Sons Ltd, 2023) Duygu Türker; Ozge Can; Gizem Aras-Beger; Turker, Duygu; Can, Ozge; Aras-Beger, Gizem
Despite the impact of ideologies on corporate social responsibility (CSR) little is known whether the authenticity of CSR can be assessed in the face of ideological tensions. Following cognitive dissonance and attribution theories this study investigates the impact of CSR authenticity which is conceptualized as a function of (1) the ideological fit between company and its CSR initiative and (2) the perceived motive of an ideologically distinct initiative on organizational attractiveness. Findings of a survey on 253 respondents reveal that while both dimensions of CSR authenticity affect organizational attractiveness the fit between company and its CSR has a higher effect than does the social motive of CSR. Moreover positive attitudes toward the CSR initiative as well as the company itself both mediate these relationships. The study shows taking an ideological perspective in authenticity is a relevant approach to understand CSR in the politically polarized contexts of most countries. © 2023 Elsevier B.V. Illegitimate tasks and occupational outcomes: the impact of vertical collectivism
(Emerald Publishing, 2022) Server Sevil Akyurek; Ozge Can; Akyurek, Server Sevil; Can, Ozge
Purpose: This study aims to understand essential work and occupational consequences of employees’ illegitimate task (ILT) experiences (unreasonable and unnecessary task demands) under the influence of vertical collectivist (VC) values. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected via a survey from 503 teachers in the Turkish public education sector. The hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. Findings: Findings of this study reveal that unnecessary tasks decrease employees’ professional identification and perceived occupational prestige whereas unreasonable tasks weaken their workplace well-being. Results also show that employees with higher VC orientation feel these adverse effects to a lesser extent. Research limitations/implications: This study demonstrates that individual-level cultural values play a significant role in understanding task-related dynamics and consequences at the workplace. It brings new theoretical insights to job design and work stress literature regarding what similar factors can mitigate task pressures on employees. Practical implications: A key practical insight from the findings is that human resources management experts should create a positive task environment where ILT demands are not welcome by analyzing jobs and skill requirements in detail communicating task decisions regularly with employees and providing them with the necessary work support. Social implications: Understanding the impact of ILT can greatly help to assess the quality of the education system and the value of teaching occupation in society. Originality/value: ILT have been mainly discussed without considering the effect of different cultural orientations. This is the first study empirically showing the diverse effects of two ILT dimensions on essential occupational outcomes in connection to individual-level cultural influences. © 2024 Elsevier B.V. Institutional pressures and greenwashing in social responsibility: reversing the link with hybridization capability
(EMERALD GROUP PUBLISHING LTD, 2025) Ozge Can; Duygu Turker; Turker, Duygu; Can, Ozge
PurposeDespite the ongoing scholarly interest in greenwashing it is not well known the impact of multiple institutional pressures on greenwashing in corporate social responsibility (CSR). Following the institutional logics perspective this study investigates how three distinct logics - commercial public and social welfare - drive greenwashing and whether organizational capability for blending diverse CSR expectations reverses this link.Design/methodology/approachThe current study conceptualized and tested an original model on how three institutional logics influence greenwashing in CSR with the mediation effect of hybridization capability as a response to logic plurality. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was performed on a survey data which was collected from 150 middle managers in Turkey.FindingsThe results show that while commercial logic has no direct or indirect impact on greenwashing public and social welfare logics drive greenwashing in CSR. However these effects are reversed when the CSR hybridization capability increases.Practical implicationsThis study contributes to the understanding of what predicts CSR greenwashing by integrating a comprehensive theoretical framework involving multiple institutional logics conflicting stakeholder demands and organizational hybridity.Originality/valueTo the best of our knowledge this is the first study that theoretically and empirically analyzed how the exposure of multiple external pressures affects the CSR greenwashing and how it can be reversed by CSR hybridization capability. This capability mitigates the threats and challenges of multiple logics and turns them into an opportunity to gain legitimacy in the eyes of stakeholders by preventing greenwashing.

Integrating digital and sustainable entrepreneurship through business models: a bibliometric analysis
(SPRINGEROPEN, 2024) Muhammad Farooq Islam; Ozge Can; Islam, Muhammad Farooq; Can, Ozge
While research exploring the benefits and challenges of integrating sustainability and digitalization in new ventures has been on the rise a comprehensive examination of the accumulated knowledge on this topic remains elusive. Addressing this gap this study aims to identify the simultaneous focus on digitalization and sustainability aspects in entrepreneurship literature and to investigate how the business model perspective has been incorporated into these studies. Using a two-phase bibliometric analysis of 284 papers from 2005 to 2022 in the Web of Science database this paper identifies the unique research clusters in the literature. The gathered data was subjected to co-occurrence citation co-citation co-author and bibliographic coupling analysis. The results reveal that while some studies prioritize digital entrepreneurship with minimal consideration of sustainability others predominantly emphasize social impact and sustainable development treating digitalization merely as a means to an end. Additionally only a small group of scholars have surveyed business models in this context. This study not only offers valuable insights into current trends and patterns in digital sustainability but also provides a framework and suggestions for scholars and entrepreneurs alike to navigate this evolving landscape. The findings especially highlight the need for business model thinking to connect the digital and sustainable features of entrepreneurship for the creation of more diverse international scholar networks and for the execution of in-depth empirical research that allows for the inquiry of particular relationships and mechanisms.

KOLEKTİF GİRİŞİMCİLİK YOLUYLA YENİLİKÇİ ÇÖZÜMLER GELİŞTİRME: KAPSAYICI BİR ÇERÇEVE
    (2021) Ozge Can; Can, Ozge

The impact of cognitive filters on strategic actions and relationships: an analysis from local environmental advocacy in the Aegean Region Turkey
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024) Ozge Can; Defne Gönenç; Can, Ozge; Gonenc, Defne
Although several internal and external factors may influence environmental non-governmental organizations’ (ENGOs) action sets and networking behaviors their values and priorities deserve special attention. Existing research highlights the importance of mobilizing resources and utilizing political opportunities in environmental advocacy, however there is relative silence regarding the impact of how ENGOs cognitively position themselves in a contested field. Through a quantitative analysis of survey data from 117 local ENGOs in the Aegean Region of Turkey we examine whether and how organizational identity scope of environmental issues and core environmental purpose (transactional or informational) as three cognitive filters play a role in shaping grassroots ENGO activities and relationships with diverse actors. A set of regression models indicates that claiming an activist identity pursuing a higher number of environmental issues and having a confrontational goal significantly influences local ENGOs’ strategic actions and the type and intensity of their external ties. These findings contribute to the discussions around resource mobilization theory and the political opportunity structure framework by highlighting the importance of intangible less visible ideological dimensions and of cognitive framing in mobilizing for environmental causes. © 2024 Elsevier B.V. The Role of Leadership in Digital Transformation: A Review and Suggestions for Future Research
(ACAD CONFERENCES LTD, 2021) Ozge Can; Can, Ozge; F Bezzina
Digital transformation (DT) through the advance and use of diverse digital technologies (e.g. big data business analytics mobile applications internet of things digital platforms) has assumed great importance for organizations. Digitalization efforts by organizations in different industries have become even more prominent by recent crises and disruptions such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Simultaneously digitalization also increase complexity for managers regarding the initiation of multiple changes in and around organizations including work processes working arrangements and stakeholder alignment. Despite these developments we have only limited knowledge about what role leaders play in these processes in generating positive impact including sustainable organizational performance enhanced innovation and creativity or industrial and social improvements. Although certain leadership concepts and approaches have been associated with DT so far no research has discussed these leadership orientations in a comprehensive manner or argued how they can be adopted by managers to connect digital capabilities to organizational value creation and strategic outcomes. Furthermore only a small number of studies have attempted to assess the leadership challenges relevant in DT processes and how these challenges can be managed or eliminated. To address these gaps through a review of the existing literature this study seeks to build an overall understanding of the impact of leadership on the success of complex digital transformations. A set of suggestions are made as possible avenues for future research clarifying the emergence of multiple and nuanced roles leaders play in DT and what new skills and responsibilities managers should assume in guiding the organization towards desired digitalization goals.

Workplace Aggression Profiles and Diverse Emotional Responses: Evidence from Pakistan
(SPRINGER, 2022) Sobia Nasir; Ozge Can; Nasir, Sobia; Can, Ozge
Because of the lack of direct measurements our understanding of different forms of aggression in organizations is still very limited. As such there has been increasing calls for going beyond the existing theoretical presumptions and indirect measurements which have been dominating the research. Based on the literature on workplace aggression as well as affective events theory and stressor-emotion model we intend to identify the unique aggression profiles and to reveal what types of emotional responses they produce for the target employees. We collected data on 249 aggression incidents in Pakistan's higher education sector through survey. The results of the cluster analysis suggest five distinct types of workplace aggression which are separated by the particular aggression behaviors involved (e.g. direct-indirect verbal-physical aggression) perceived strength blame attribution third party presence and identity of the offender. Further statistical analysis indicates that target employees give different emotional responses (anger sadness embarrassment disappointment feeling insulted) to these diverse mistreatments. As a key contribution this study makes it clearer that the sources organizational processes and underlying social dynamics might vary a lot across different aggression experiences depending on what the topic is who are involved and how the targets perceive the situation. Second it presents an initial test regarding how instead of a standard emotional reaction diverse negative emotional responses accompany different aggression profiles.
