Enhancing Immersion in Game Dynamics through Narrative Realism:: A Case Study with undefinedThe Orc Invasionundefined Game Project
(2025) Kaçar, Ahmet Tunç; Özarslan, Yasin
Computer games have been widely recognized as interactive storytelling entertainment media in various scholarly studies. Nevertheless, the narrative structures within computer games can vary significantly depending on the presence or absence of a defined end goal. Games that incorporate an end goal, often referred to as narrative games, typically present a linear storyline coupled with gameplay that creates the illusion of branching narratives throughout the experience. This study adopts a qualitative single-case research design, selecting The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as the primary subject for analysis. To conduct a comprehensive examination of narrative realism and explore potential enhancements through narrative branching in Skyrim, the researcher employs direct gameplay observation to assess quest lines and character progression systems. The analysis applies a thematic coding approach based on key narrative dimensions of narrative flow, character progression, and narrative realism. The findings aim to offer practical implications for game developers seeking to enhance immersion through more dynamic quest and progression systems. The insights gained from this analysis are subsequently applied to the development of a medium-scale indie game titled The Orc Invasion, a strategic, narrative-driven platformer shooter integrating complex role-playing game (RPG) elements aimed at advancing narrative realism.
