    The year 2020 met us with the COVID-19 pandemic. The covid-19 pandemic has gone past a mere health challenge. Its effect can be felt in the economy and society in general. Women form a large chunk of the response efforts geared at flattening the curve of the COVID-19 scourge. As the first point of contact caregivers medical personnel volunteers logistics facilitators researchers and scientists and other professionals critical to the fight against the virus women are making profound contributions in the fight against the spread of the outbreak. Most of the caregivers found in our homes and communities today are women. Furthermore women stand a higher risk of infection and loss of their sources of livelihood and as the outbreak continues to spread there is all likelihood that they may not be able to access programs vital to their reproductive and sexual health. There is also a rise in cases of domestic violence against women in this crisis period. This study will be exploring a wide range of literature about pandemics that have happened in the past and previous public health emergencies and crisis to enable it to ascertain patterns by which pandemics can further heighten the different kinds of violence against women. Evidence gathered from this study will be used to make recommendations to governments civil society organizations community-based agencies and international donor agencies to help make women and children's health priority keeping them safe and preparing them adequately for another possible pandemic.

    The Difference between Male and Female Sport Participation in Turkey: “Determination Always Finds a Way”

    The fight for gender equality throughout the world should be acknowledged and properly represented in society. This is all the more important in the sporting world with a further emphasis on the everyday Turkish woman. The rapid rise in female participation in sport in Turkey over the last ten years indicates a rise in the status of women in sport as well as several other areas. However it should be acknowledged that there is a clear gap with regards to how men and women participate in sport. The varying physical composition of women in comparison to their male counterparts and also the varying level of expectations society places on both male and female participation in sport limits the level of success women derive from actively participating in sport activities. This paper will examine the origin concepts and historical background of women in sport in Turkey. At the same time it will evaluate the current situation while also taking into consideration future developments relating to female participation leadership and sport media. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.     Tehlikeli Özellikler: Türkiye Süper Ligdeki Futbol Kulüplerinin Sağ Kalım Analizi

    Avrupa futbolu toplu sporlar arasında en popüler olanıdır. En üst seviye ligde sağ kalmak kulüpler için hayati önem taşımaktadır. Bu çalışma 1990’dan 2017’ye kadar olan veri setine tekrarlayan olaylarda sağ kalım modelini uygulayarak Türkiye Süper Ligindeki kulüplerin sağ kalımını etkileyen faktörleri incelemektir. Çalışmanın en önemli sonucu ligde yeni olmanın yükümlülüklerinin bulunmasıdır. Yeni kulüpler var olan kulüplere göre ligden düşme konusunda daha yüksek bir risk ile karşılaşırlar. Takımların Süper Ligdeki ilk yılında küme düşme riski ligde var olan takımlardan 20.7 kat daha fazladır. Bu nedenle Süper Lige yeni çıkan takımlar yeni olmanın cezasını çekmektedirler. Bunun haricinde her bir yıllık tecrübe artışı risk oranını %10 azaltmaktadır. Bununla beraber her bir yabancı oyuncu riski azaltırken kulüp tarihindeki daha önceki her bir küme düşme sayısı riski artırmaktadır. Son olarak kulüp merkezinin bölgesel konumunun ve aynı şehirde başka kulüplerin varlığının Türkiye Süper Ligde sağ kalım üzerinde anlamlı bir etkisi yoktur.

    Oyunu Değiştirmek: Neden Daha Fazla Kadın Spora Katılım Sağlayamıyor?

    Toplumun diğer yönlerinde olduğu gibi kadınların da spordaki mevcut durumu uzun ve zorlu bir tarihin sonucudur. Akademik çalışmalarda kadınların ve kız çocuklarının spora katılımı ve eğitim başarısı arasında güçlü bir bağlantı kurulmaktadır. Spor ayrıca cinsiyet ayrımcılığı olmadan katılımcıların fiziksel zihinsel duygusal sosyal ve psikolojik gelişiminde önemli rol oynamaktadır. Elbette erkek ve kadın eşittir ancak yine de kadınlar hala birçok az gelişmiş ve gelişmekte olan ülkelerde cinsiyet eşitsizliği sorunuyla karşı karşıyadır. Cinsiyet, sosyal sınıf ırk ve yaş ile birlikte sporun teorik olarak tüm analizlerine dâhil edilmesi gereken önemli bir sosyal etmendir. Kadınların spor ve fiziksel aktivite alanındaki görünürlüğünü ve katılımlarını artırmak toplumsal cinsiyet çalışmaları açısından da önemlidir. Bu çerçevede bu çalışmanın amacı sporu cinsiyet analizi çerçevesinde inceleyerek bazı eksik konuları aydınlatmaktır. Ayrıca cinsiyetçi yaklaşımı ortadan kaldırmak için kadınların karar verme ve liderlik pozisyonlarında yer almalarını sağlamak sporda şiddet istismar ve tacize karşı savaşmak için politikaların geliştirilmesi ve uygulamaya başlaması gerekliliği belirtilmektedir.

    Salary differences under the salary cap in major league soccer

    Professional soccer is the world’s most popular sport, a number of National Leagues are under the control of National Associations. The economic theory behind soccer is the continuing competition to earn much more than other sports do in the sports market. Since the supply of talent is limited teams’ demand for certain professionals is so strong that it leads to salary differences between players. Therefore in this study attention is given to the determinants of the differences in workers’ salaries in the Major League Soccer labor market using Generalized Least Squares (GLS) estimation on panel data from 2007 to 2016. Birth place is the most influential determinant of a player’s salary along with a player’s position a player’s age whether the player has a national team duty and the number of games in which the player started in the first eleven. Conversely moving from one Major League Soccer team to another and the number of games played as a substitute have a negative effect on players’ salaries. © 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    COMPETING FOR WAVES: THE UNJUST REALITY OF WOMEN´S POSITION IN THE WORLD OF SURFING

    Yıllar boyunca kadınlar erkek şovenizminin bakısı ile karşılaşmışlardır. Bu eziyet ve muamele ile hayatlarının her alanında yüz yüze gelmişlerdir, o bakımdan sörf bir istisna değildir. Sörf sporunun ortaya çıkışından bu yana sadece erkekler için bir spor olduğu düşünülmektedir. Bu yanlış kanı yüzünden kadınlar yıllar boyunca bu spor etkinliğinden uzaklaştırdılar mı veya kendilerini başka sporlara mı yönlendirdiler? Bu açıdan değerlendirildiğinde bu çalışmada kadınların sörf sporundaki rolü incelenmektedir. Ayrıca dünyanın her yerinden kadınların karşılaştığı zorluklar da analiz edilmiştir. Uzun yıllar boyunca kadınlar ne yazık ki birçok alanda erkeklere verilen cinsiyet ayrımcı toplumlarda yaşamıştır. Kadınlara erkeklerin üstün olduğu fikri benimsetilmeye çalışılmıştır. Bu yanlış kanı sörf sporunda da erkeklerin tek rekabetçi olduğu düşüncesini ortaya çıkarmıştır. Bu bakımdan sörf yapmak isteyen kadınların uğradığı aşağılayıcı hareketlerin ve sözlerin nedeni bu durumdan kaynaklanmaktadır. Neyse ki zaman içerisinde sörf sporu içerisinde kadınların rolüne ilişkin düşünce değişmiştir. Sonuç olarak günümüzde milyonlarca kadını spor dallarında aktif olarak görmek mümkündür, özellikle de tarihi spor dallarında. Her ne kadar günümüzde kadınlar sörfte başarı sağlamış olsa da geçmişte sörf yapabilmek ve kendilerini kabul ettirebilmek için haksız rekabetlere ve baskılara maruz kalmışlardır.

    Women's economic empowerment in Turkey

    Turkey has experienced growth in both the population and the workforce. However female participation in the workforce in Turkey is extremely low largely due to financial dependency and lack of higher education. The authors argue that greater research is needed to improve the economic position of women throughout the country and this remains a challenge that must be fixed both culturally and socioeconomically. The book explores the significant gap between policy advancements actual practices and the impact of regional variety in the cultural structure. The authors suggest that this in turn has affected Turkey's ability to implement changes and reform. Reform must allow women to pursue changes that will give them greater financial flexibility and freedom within the country. The authors demonstrate the concept and framework for women's empowerment and explore the need for this. This book seeks to discuss the approaches and strategies for empowering women by outlining the strategies policies and tools that women are using for their empowerment focusing on Turkey while comparing with other countries worldwide. It also brings several issues to the forefront such as equality treatment political participation social issues the gender pay gap the glass ceiling and gender (in)equality the migration effect and education. Offering a multi-disciplinary exploration of the relationship and connection between employment national policies migration economies entrepreneurialism and gender in present Turkey this book is an invaluable contribution to the existing literature surrounding Turkish gender studies and will be of interest to both scholars and experts in the field. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.
