Article Citation - WoS: 135Citation - Scopus: 179ESG practices and corporate financial performance: Evidence from Borsa Istanbul(Borsa Istanbul Anonim Sirketi, 2022) Ebru E. Saygılı; Serafettin Arslan; Ayşe Özden Birkan; Birkan, Ayse Ozden; Arslan, Serafettin; Saygili, EbruThe purpose of this paper is to determine whether environmental social and governance (ESG) practices affect corporate financial performance (CFP) indicators at Turkish listed companies. The impact of ESG disclosures on the firm-level CFP of companies listed on the Borsa Istanbul Corporate Governance Index (XKURY) over the period 2007–2017 is investigated using the corporate governance principles of the Capital Markets Board and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) environmental indicators. The contribution of this study is that it explores the influence of twenty independent ESG variables comprising company disclosures on CFP in an emerging market. The results of the study reveal a negative effect of environmental disclosures on CFP. Stakeholder involvement in management contributes to operational efficiency in the social dimension of ESG. Provisions related to shareholder rights and the board of directors has a positive impact on CFP in the governance dimension. © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Saygılı; Yucel Yilmaz Ozturkoglu; Ozturkoglu, Yucel; Saygili, EbruPurpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the presence of ethical standards in the content of international hospitals codes of ethics disclosed in their websites. Design/methodology/approach: Firstly the focus is on developing an integrated framework of universal values and hospital responsibilities for the content of hospitals’ codes of ethics documents. A list of key ethical issues was determined through an examination of the American Medical Association Code of Medical Ethics (2016) the WAMA (2017) International Code of Medical Ethics and relevant peer-reviewed journal articles (Finseschi 1997, Vergallo 2016, Suhonen et al. 2011, Reader et al. 2014). Based on the detailed literature review 48 concepts which were evenly classified under two groups, professional conduct issues and patients’ rights. In the second stage the issues were ranked related to professional conduct and patients’ rights from most to least frequent for the proposed conceptual framework using World Global Hospitals codes of ethics. Findings: It was found that only 62% of the top 100 hospitals have an ethics code report in their websites. The findings of the study have significant theoretical and practical implications. First most of the hospitals’ ethical codes extensively emphasize professional conduct and patients’ rights whereas they differ in what they include or exclude from their codes and the wording used. The number and frequency of the professional conduct issues is higher than patients’ rights. Emerging ethical issues such as physicians’ and patients’ freedom of choice sperm donation and artificial reproduction were not widely mentioned whereas abortion euthanasia human rights and transplantation issues were disregarded entirely. Practical implications: This study provides a benchmark for hospitals to assess their codes against other hospitals’ codes in terms of the specific items they address. Social implications: The results of this study provide a benchmark for evaluating and developing ethical codes for hospitals in light of the international health standards and norms. Originality/value: To the best of the knowledge no previous study has theoretically or practically analyzed hospitals’ codes of ethics. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. The role of ownership structure for XKURY companies(Routledge info@tandf.co.uk, 2020) Ebru E. Saygılı; Arikan Tarik Saygili; Alina Taran; Saygili, Arıkan Tarık; Saygili, Ebru; Taran, AlinaThis paper investigates the influence of ownership structure on corporate governance practices of Turkish companies listed in Borsa Istanbul Corporate Governance Index (XKURY). It proposes a context-specific ownership structure (founding families state ownership foreign ownership from both developed and emerging markets and institutional investors) and publicly available corporate governance scores as indicators for corporate governance practices. The results of fixed effects panel regression analyses show that state ownership has a negative influence on weighted and non-weighted average corporate governance scores as mainly determined by shareholder protection and board of directors-related practices during 2010–2017. The evidence regarding the other ownership categories is not sufficient over alternative estimations. Overall the study provides a critical assessment of the role of ownership in shaping the corporate governance practices of XKURY companies. © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Saygılı; Tuncay Ercan; Ercan, Tuncay; Saygili, EbruThe aim of this chapter is to evaluate and predict the future of international fintech instruments in the domain of innovation diffusion theory (IDT) adoption strategies. Further the consequences of the new payments system directive (PSD2) in Europe and blockchain applications are discussed. For instance money transfer and payments have the highest rate of adoption (ROA) while insurance services have the highest speed of growing ROA due to relative advantages high compatibility and trialability levels and low level of complexity and uncertainty. Cross country comparisons include descriptive statistics about fintech deal value and volume innovation rank B2C commerce market ROA and internet penetration. Germany is the only country listed in all of the top 10 ranking lists followed by the U.S. the U.K. and France. Also China India and Canada have distinguished success in terms of fintech indicators while the growth in Japan is expected to be slow. Accordingly ROA in five emerging markets is much higher than some of the developed countries which can be explained by the Cancian Theory. © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Saygılı; Yucel Yilmaz Ozturkoglu; Mehmet C. Kocakülâh; Ozturkoglu, Yucel; Saygili, Ebru E.; Kocakulah, Mehmet C.Today's competitive world is given the critical role of enterprise resource planning (ERP) for coordinating the workflow in companies from different industries. To provide valuable insights into ERP identifying the critical factors are the most important issue in achieving quality and success. Both in literature and practice there are quite a few of success factors for ERP applications. One of the purposes of this paper is to empirically classify the most important critical factors referred by scholars in previous studies. Another purpose is to determine the critical success factors in the light of end-user perceptions. In this respect exploratory factor analysis was conducted to determine the factorial structure of the scale. Data was collected 128 ERP end-users from different departments of companies in manufacturing industry. The results of the analysis provided a six-dimensional structure for critical success factors (CSFs) in quality and successful ERP applications. © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Saygili; Yucel Ozturkoglu; Ozturkoglu, Yucel; Saygili, Ebru E.; Ozturkoglu, OmerJob satisfaction in terms of worker's satisfaction is one of the intensively studied areas in human resource and management. However there is little information available on how ergonomics and the manufacturing environment affect job satisfaction. This study analyzes the extent of the relationship between job satisfaction and work and workplace related conditions. A conceptual model is proposed to evaluate job satisfaction that considers 34 elements in four categories: manufacturing systems facility design safety and ergonomics and human resources and management. A survey of 169 blue-collar workers working in the automotive industry was conducted to investigate the applicability of the model. A comprehensive exploratory factor analysis was used to determine inter-related elements their underlying factors and their effects on job satisfaction. The analysis revealed 6 factors with 18 related elements. From a multi linear regression analysis we develop a job satisfaction model built on factors of human resource policies safety ergonomics air quality thermal comfort and disturbing equipment. The results reveal that ergonomics plays the most important role in workers' satisfaction for the respondent Turkish automotive workers. In contrast human resource policies seem not play a critical role in job satisfaction because of higher standards in automotive industry compared to other industries in Turkey. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. This study investigates the effects of CG practices on the firm-level financial performance of Borsa Istanbul XKURY-indexed companies during 2007-2019. Four specific aspects of CG are analysed: shareholders' rights public disclosure and transparency stakeholders' rights and board of directors functioning as defined by the Turkish Code of Corporate Governance in line with international principles of CG issued by OECD. Alternative estimations of panel regression analysis indicate a positive association between stakeholder-oriented governance practices and firm-level financial performance expressed by accounting measures for both financial and non-financial companies. Shareholder protection policies have a negative influence on accounting-based performance especially for non-financial industries whereas the corporate practices related to board of directors and public disclosure vary between financial and non-financial entities. These findings contribute to international research on CG implications for emerging markets providing evidence about the importance of stakeholders' protection and the distinctive effects of CG dimensions for corporate financial performance.Article Citation - WoS: 3Analysis of Corporate Governance and Financial Sustainability Using the TOPSIS Method(INT JOURNAL CONTEMPORARY ECONOMICS & ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, 2022) Tarik Saygili Arikan; Miray Gecim; Yucel Ozturkoglu; Ebru Saygili; Saygili, Arikan Tarik; Gecim, Miray; Ozturkoglu, Yucel; Saygili, EbruStakeholders of listed companies are interested in the financial sustainability and corporate governance (CG) issues in the companies.
