(2023) HANDE ODAMAN KAYA; EBRU ALAKAVUK; Alakavuk, Ebru; Kaya, Hande Odaman
In May 2012 “Urban Renewal Law” for reducing the expected seismic risk for existing buildings was published. Depending on this law existing old buildings should have stability tests for the decision, if it should be demolished or strengthened. This article is mainly concentrating on the earthquake stability and energy performance of a case building regarding the physical and environmental dimensions of urban renewal. Case building is a deficient structure that couldn’t catch the static regulations and so demolished. Regarding the urban renewal process a new building was constructed following the energy performance regulations. In this framework structural and energy performance analysis of the existing deficient building are done to present the conditions first. Then the energy performance of the new building is analysed to be compared with the demolished building. For the static analysis of the existing building ideCAD for the energy performance analysis BEP-TR 2 programs are used. As a result of this study the structural performance of the case building is examined to display the need of a new construction and then the development of the energy performance is presented by the comparison in between demolished and new buildings.

    (2016) Atakan, Tuğçe; Alakavuk, Ebru
Usually when it is said 'kindergarten period' it is understood one or two years before the children start school. Kindergarten term is used mostly for 3-6 years old children that are educated on well-arranged programme in institutions. In the widest sense the kindergarten period starts with the birth of a child and continuous until the child starts basic education. In this study will be discussed in detail the effect of design constituting sustainability consciousness in kindergarten. If this study want to describe the sustainability not just according to architecture but generally; fulfilling the needs of today according to possible future demands, using the resources effectively, not harming the environment, recycling the waste and we can summarize this to leave livable world for the future generations. Educators are paying high attention on awareness and consciousness for establishing sustainability, and are suggesting 'education for sustainability' for children before school to establish this kind of point of view. In this thesis we researched the principles to enhance the sustainable buildings. In this study, after mentioning the importance of sustainability in education, we studied the important subjects in kindergarten design such as using the natural light, heating, cooling, air conditioning, wind power, not wasting water and material selection. Also criticize the world for not paying enough attention to sustainable buildings; although there are recently some improvements in Turkey, but there have to be more implementation and research regarding to sustainable buildings. Another goal is to provide extra source for sustainable kindergarten designs.

Biophilic Design in Architecture: Applications in Healthcare, Office and Educational Buildings
    (2025) Çıtak, Büşra; Alakavuk, Ebru
Nature and humanity have always been in a state of interaction throughout history. Mankind has observed and, at times, imitated nature. With the modernization of the world, the development of cities, and the increase in buildings, a visible boundary has emerged between humanity and nature. People have shifted to a lifestyle disconnected from nature, spending most of their time indoors. In this thesis, the relationship between nature and humans is examined within interior spaces through the use of biophilic design patterns in educational, healthcare, and office buildings. The impact of these designs on people is analyzed in detail for each building type. For each category, three buildings were selected, with examples chosen from low, medium, and high-cost structures to explore how biophilic design patterns are integrated into architecture across different budget levels. The aim of this thesis is to compare biophilic design implementations in hospital, educational, and office buildings, and to analyze through a literature review how biophilic design varies in architecture depending on the different needs of building types and cost differences.

Energy and Daylight Performance Analysis of Double Skin Facade Systems in Hot Arid Climate: A Case Study in Nigeria
(2018) Gambo, Barau Wurma; Alakavuk, Ebru

(2025) Aykar, Gizem Nur; Alakavuk, Ebru

EXAMINING THE DAYLIGHTING PERFORMANCE OF OFFICE BUILDINGS ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE RECTORATE BUILDING IN IZMIR
(ZNACK PUBLISHING HOUSE, 2021) Ecenur Kizilorenli; Ebru Alakavuk; Alakavuk, Ebru; Kizilorenli, Ecenur
The efficient use of energy resources has affected all areas of life as well as architecture. There are many ways to increase energy efficiency in buildings. Supporting the efficient use of daylight in the design process reducing the energy to be used for artificial illumination and reducing heating costs are among the applications that support energy efficiency. The issue of supporting daylighting by reducing artificial illumination draws attention especially in office buildings due to the high number of hours used during the day. Insufficient light and lack of visual comfort in offices used during the day increase the consumption of electrical energy. Within the scope of this study a parametric study was conducted to optimize the daylighting performance of an office building. For this purpose rectorate building of a university which is used as an office building was selected for the case study and the daylight condition of this building was examined. For increasing the daylighting performance of the building some revisions were proposed. Results of this research are discussed with visuals and simulation values.

Facade optimization for an education building using multi-objective evolutionary algorithms
(LLC Editorial of Journal ""Light Technik"", 2020) Arda Agirbas; Ebru Alakavuk; Alakavuk, Ebru; Agirbas, Arda
Architectural design of a facade both at the aes-thetic point of view and from the point of view of internal daylighting performance of the build-ing can be considered as a complex task. In this study we implement a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to formally exploration the process of reconstruction of the education building’s fa-cade. The purpose of this research is to create a facade configuration by considering the size and loca-tion of elements and their materials when creating a suitable internal daylight distribution. The total construction cost of the building’s exterior and the daylight performance of the building’s interior are considered as objectives. The problem formula-tion includes two conflicting objectives which are to increase daylighting aspect on each floor and reduce the total construction cost of the facade. To de-tect the approximation of Pareto fronts including non-dominated solutions we used a fast and elitist multi-objective genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). Computational and architectural results show that NSGA-II is efficient enough to demonstrate eligible facade design alternatives. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

(2022) Kalender, Mehmet Emin; Alakavuk, Ebru

Decarbonizing the urban environment has two significant challenges: Increasing electricity demand due to the electrification of space heating and increased renewables share in the electricity supply. The European Commission defines a new grid support mechanism for peak-shaving products in renewed Electricity Market Design. This aims to enable a new market tool to stabilize electric supply and demand. This study examines a grid-integrated thermal storage device's technical feasibility and economic performance to meet net zero building (nZEB) definitions. Alternative scenarios considering current national nZEB targets present energy market options and regulations are compared using the life cycle cost and the global warming potentials over the building lifetime. The results show that better building performance is possible even with a low investment increase of 6.7% compared to minimum building standards based on regulations. This enables older building cases to perform similarly with new building targets for Turkish National nZEB. Building electrification using heat pumps and thermal storage systems gives similar economic performances in the long term when a dynamic electricity tariff is available. Adapting the life cycle approach to decision-making in construction contracts can lead to a 50% decrease in building emissions while staying within the same construction budget. © 2024 Elsevier B.V. Ofis binalarının LEED sertifikası aydınlatma kriterlerine göre değerlendirilmesi
    (2015) Bakır, İdil; Alakavuk, Ebru
The progress in Industrial & technological areas, whıch has started with the Industrial Revolutıon, has deteriorated the ecological balance and depleted the natural resources. Sustaınability, whıch initially seemed as a solution wıthin this concept, became an important part of Interior Architecture as in disciplines related to design. The placement and design of the lighting system and the sufficient usage of daylight encompasses a major part of the sustainability criteria. The lighting systems of the offices that are the secondary living areas should be evaluated in terms of sustainability as well. In this research, the energy savings and loss of the artificial office lighting systems has been calculated and then divided into office sections and types, according to the ASHRAE/IES standard 90.1-2007 which are included in the LEED certificate's lighting criterıa. The offıces sampled here in have been analyzed and compared ın accordance wıth thıs crıteria. In the case study, first of all, the definition, progress, types and sections of offices are discussed later on, the subjects of light and lighting have been mentioned. The term of sustainability has been defined. There is a variety of certificates originated ın different countries. In Turkey, the most prevalent and detailed certificate that analyzes lighting criteria is LEED. Other sections of the certificate are not dıscussed in this case study, only the lighting systems have been studied. This is based on a hypothetical Optima Project that is created by a lighting company. The comparison in this case study is between the three offices, ERKE, with the LEED certificate, DENGE, without it and the hypothetical optima project. The main criteria for the evaluation of these three offices are that they both have all the office types and sections of the ASHRAE/IES standard 90.1-2007. The wattage of the artificial lighting systems of these three offices have been calculated while the systems were in use. In the sections of the LEED certificate, the ASHRAE/IES standards 90.1-2007 of lighting power density proportions have been used. According to these proportions, the square meter configuration of these office types and sections has been taken into account. The results of these measurements have been multiplied wıth lighting wattage and thus the lighting energy savings and loss have been configured. In order to consider adequate savings of lighting energy in accordance with lighting power density, the said savings has to be 10 % or more. The three offices have been comparatively analyzed according to these criteria. Keywords: Office, Artificial Lighting, Sustainability, Energy efficiency, LEED

Residents' awareness and knowledge of sustainable smart cities
(EDP Sciences, 2023) Ebru Alakavuk; Duygu Çinar Umdu; Aleyna Koyuncu; Nilay Derya Baro; Alakavuk, Ebru; Umdu, Duygu Cinar; Baro, Nilay Derya; Koyuncu, Aleyna; M. Pushkarev
Sustainable and smart city studies are issues that local governments business circles and the academic community often deal with regarding city and neighborhood developments. Various grant calls and research studies on the subject are frequently made and its importance in the professional field is increasing. However in these studies where the society stands is often questioned. In addition consumers and users are critical to realizing a sustainable and energy-efficient world. These users and consumers can be defined as an urban society in cities. Awareness knowledge and participation of city residents about sustainable and smart cities will play a significant role in the city's journey to be sustainable and smart. In other words increasing society's awareness of sustainability will change attitudes and habits and make the city's structure more sustainable and smarter. In this study A 28-question survey was conducted with 518 participants on the society's perspective and knowledge of sustainable smart urban areas. It was found that the participants had general knowledge and awareness of sustainability. However they had partial and little knowledge about sustainable urban development and smart city practices and only 15.31% of the participants knew all the terms such as sustainable environment sustainable society and smart life related to these concepts. While some of the results are compatible with each other many of them are contradictory. Different studies can be done based on these contradictions. © 2024 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
